I personally want one..but haven't discussed it yet. I don't think it puts a negative sping on marriage at all... I just think better safe then sorry, you never know what could happen, but thats just my opinion. I do understand how it can cause some people to get upset.. thats exactly why I haven't said anything to the FH about it!

Its a little strange talking about that sort of thing. Any lawyer would say to DO IT but I'm mixed on it too. I think prenups work for couples where 1 of the 2 of them have a lot of assets (think business or property owner) and the other doesn't. To me, thats when it makes more sense. If both people are on similar pages financially I don't think its so necessary. Plus god forbid a marriage ends in divorce, if the assets 2 people bring to the table are similar, they're not gonna suddenly grant 1 of them a ton of money out of nowhere.
I think I am going to get one. At this point we don't have much but I know that in the future I will be making a pretty decent amount more than he will so that's an issue for me. I also have a trust fund that I don't really want anyone else to have access to since I'm sure that wouldn't be what my parents would want either. I don't know, it's a hard subject to talk about it my opinion but I have seen a lot of people get screwed over during divorces so like many other people have said, I would rather make decisions now when we are ok than in the future when things may not be so good.

Re: Pre-nup
Sorry to crash girls! I am actually a family law attorney and DH and I did not do a prenup. Although it is definitely the smart thing to do in my professional opinion, it is something every couple needs to discuss and come to an agreement with each other.
Also, it is a common misunderstanding that you don't need one if you don't have money. A prenup can protect FUTURE assets also and not just what you have when you get married.

We are not getting one. However, Im not opposed to it at all. When you have alot of personal affects that you worked hard for (like homes cars money) I could totally understand wanting to secure it. Would it be different if you were asking for it? FH & I own our own things seperately & now we are venturing into things together. But why shouldnt we secure our own things? It doesnt damper your marriage its not about possibly getting divorced because FH & I are together for over 5yrs & I know we will make it. I think its just about security. Its all in how you look at it.
I agree with this, I am not doing it but I would not be oppose to the idea if he ask.

Re: Pre-nup
my FH do not have a pre-nup..however, we do have an official signed agreement (from our attorney) that deals with the property that we own should things go sour before we walk down the aisle.
We are stable and happy..but you never know what could happen in any relationship regardless of how many years a couple has been together.

Re: Pre-nup
We have not discussed this topic but I don't think we are going to have one. If one of us owned property or made a huge amount more than the other I would probably look into it. Right now we are both equally broke thanks to the wedding so neither one of us has anything to lose!

Re: Pre-nup
We will not get one, because we don't have a super lot of money. FH seems to think he's a Rockefeller compared to me, so teases that we should do it, but it's not going to happen.

Re: Pre-nup
I'm getting one. FH already knows and he's not in love with the idea but understands that I'm coming into the marriage with certain assets to protect. Now I just have to work up the nerve to talk to the Trusts and Estates department in my law firm and get the ball rolling........

Re: Pre-nup
No pre-nup for me either... Although FH makes more then me, he's no millionaire and I don't have anything that's that fantastic either.
We tease each other though because the one thing he DOES have worth money is his precious show car... but i keep assuring him that i wouldn't want that stupid thing anyway..lol

We're not and we wont do one. I feel like people that ask for one are expecting it to fail

It has nothing to do with expecting it to fail...It's being a smart women and looking out for your future, hopefully you will never have to use it but it could save you.
Talk to any woman who has been through a divorce and they will tell you the financial hell they went through in a divorce. All of you teachers have to realize what your pension is worth and if things do go sour, you might loose part of that.
If I was with a man who had a profitable business, owned his own home, and had a large stock portfolio, I would expect to sign a pre-nup. I have seen people hold on for years fighting for things they were not entitled to. It's all great when your in love but statistics don't lie and the divorce rate is high.
Another thing to consider for girls in interfaith marriages, you can add how you want your children to be raised.

Re: Pre-nup
I think pre-nups are a good idea. Honestly, if i had a job making 150,000 a year, i wouldn't want my ex-husband to take half of that. I feel that in certain situations, it could save a whole lot of people the hassel of going through a messy divorce. We've talked about getting one..but if we'll actually take the time to do it..thats another story. I don't think we'd have a lot to lose if we did.
