Pre Nup

Pre Nup

Hi everyone. I have been lurking for about 2 weeks and finally decided to join. I have to be careful because work frowns on this kind of surfing and blocks a lot of stuff.

So my question is has anyone signed or been approaced to sign a pre-nup by their finace?

Or have you asked your fiance to sign one?

I might be in this position and was wondering how other women have dealt with this.

Thanks!

We've discussed it. We agreed that if the time ever comes that we feel we need a divorce, we'll go through a mediator to divvy everything up.

I'm a matrimonial attorney, so I guess that I see pre-nups differently from most people. I basically see it as an insurance policy. You insure your home, your jewelry, your car, even your life, so why not insure your marriage if one or more of you has individual assets? Young couples come into my office hand and hand, smiling and do this all the time with no problems. If you don't plan on ever getting divorced then there should be no issue because you will probably never need it and if the couple simply grows apart and wants to divorce then there is nothing to fight over because it is all spelled out. It makes it much easier for everyone and cuts down on the nastiness.

I highly doubt that people that are getting married are considering getting a divorce!

You would be surprised. Alot of people today do not take marriage as seriously as they should and have an attitude kind of like 'well, I'll roll the dice and see how it works out and if not, we'll just get divorced' They see Britney Spears get what seems to be an instant divorce and think that it will be like that for them too if they need it. In reality, divorce usually takes about a year because of all the fighting.

Re: Pre Nup

Some people are so in love with the idea of being married, the big ring and planning a wedding that they dont stop and think about what will happen when the reception is over. Sure most marriages work out and the couple live happily ever after but a lot of marriages that fail. Sometimes when i read forum posts I wonder to myself how many of us will actually have successful marriages and how many will be in divorce court. My parents were divorced after 20 years of marriage so you really never know. Therefore, I think that it may be a smart idea to get a prenup as insurance in case the marriage fails you don't lose valuable assets. As far as FH and I go, I will be signing something regarding the share he has in his family business to protect the rest of his family in case our relationship or their future relationships go sour. Other then that, whatever is mine is his and his is mine.....

I hear what you're saying, but these people are idiots. But for anyone that is going into a marriage that has a lot of money or property they should consider it.
