Re: Pre Nup
Yeah. All good stuff.
The reason I asked is my fiance has a business and his parents are doing ok :) So there are some issues there.
The good news is we have an excellent relationship and plan on this being for life! We have good communication and are ina great place.
But I do agree that with a 50% divorce rate there are a lot of people who go into marraige 'rolling the dice'.
Has anyone seen the show Bridezillas?

Re: Pre Nup
We have prepared a prenup, due to family inheritances. FM me if you want contact info for an attorney.

We didn't even think about it but I don't think it is something we need. We have been living together for 2 years now so everything is combined anyway.

Re: Pre Nup
We will be having a pre nup. We both will be inheriting property that has been in each of our families for quite some time...
We plan on being married for life....but does anyone EVER really get married with the INTENT on divorcing?
It's a piece of paper that hopefully will sit in a cabinet and never need to be taken out....but better safe than sorry.

Re: Pre Nup
I think it becomes an issue if the playing field isn't level.....if one has much more property, inheritance, assets, etc than the other. If you are 'even' to begin with, I don't think it's an issue. Personally, I am 12 years older than my FH. For that fact alone, I have 'more'....simply bc I've had more time to accumulate assets. When I was his age, 29, I had much less than what I have now at the age of 41. Going forward we are going to share everything, but the property I obtained and the business I developed long before I met him will stay mine, GOD FORBID of a divorce. So to answer your question, I think it has to be considered on a person by person basis and it really is what makes you comfortable 'in case' of divorce.

I agree with the attorney. I just graduated law school and feel the same way, after hearing the stories of love gone completely psychotic. I would sign it in a hear beat. Too bad I got married before I knew about them...
We have considered a post nup. You have to be realistic, and realize that no matter how much you love someone, people change and not always for the better.
I know someone who is lost her home after her huband of 17 yrs left her for a younger woman (right before they were to adopt). She is loosing the house because he mortgaged it to open up a business and hasn't paid the mortgage in over a year! Last year at this time she was saying what a great husband he was and how much she trusted him. Had she done a pre-nup, her now ugly divorce would be a lot less ugly.

I think it depends. I don't think having a pre nup is a bad thing. If you have a lot of assets then I might consider it. Its just a way of protecting your assets. Both FH and I do not have a lot of assets and we have no property so we are not having a pre nup.

OMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMG.
I would sign one if I was being asked to but I wasn't... and I have about 200K in property (real estate). If it was a million bucks I'd be concerned, but since we just bought a house together thats worth twice that, I'm not that worried. I think if you have significant inheritances coming to you, it makes sense to do. And no, no one ever goes in thinking its not gonna work out but what if?
Edited because i make no sense when i type fast.

Re: Pre Nup
Maybe I seem deluded but I know that my FH is not the sort of person who will try to rip me to shreds in the INCREDIBLY unlikely event that we divorce. He is from Ohio and has good midwestern sensibilities, he's also a pastor's son. It just isn't within him to be cruel and conniving.
We also don't have any property or bundles of money...and neither of us believes in divorce.
So...no prenup for us.

Re: Pre Nup
Signing a pre nup has nothing to do with what you have now and how your relationship is at the moment you get married. This is for the unlikely chance that many years down the road, when you and he have acquired many more assets, things fall apart (which unfortunately happens a lot and not with couples who planned on getting divorced when they got married). No one would marry someone who they thought a) they would likely divorce and b) is the kind of person who will get nasty during divorce proceedings. You may have a 'whats mine is yours' attitude now with the man you love, but if that love is gone in a few years, you might not feel the same way. Divorce is very difficult so why make it any harder by dragging it out and arguing over whose is whose. It's an insurance policy and something you can probably laugh about while you sign it because you know you'll never need it. And if some day you do need it it will be because you don't have the same kind of relationship you did and you might not be as willing to share everything you have with him, so you'll be glad you signed it.
