bottom line- you never know what the future may hold that is why you buy life insurance, why you get car insurance and why you make a 401k or save money for emergencies- or any other form of insurance that you may contribute to.
no that does not mean you expect to smack your car up - or die young or any of those horrible things, but you protect youself in case.
I know what you're saying, this just seems different to me. I'm not in love with my car. It's not going to be the father of my children. I think the difference is it's more of an emotional thing to me. But logically, I understand the concept. I guess I'm just a sap! Hopefully, I'm not a sucker!! Though I don't think I am!!
that's what it comes down too...looking at the situation pragmatically or with LOVEY eyes...a pre-nup or the size of your diamond, or how much money you spend on your wedding has NOTHING to do with the outcome or longevity of it.
if you have something worth protecting, protect it. here is sappy and this is how I feel-I have given my fh my most valuable possession, my heart, hopefully he will protect it, but if he doesn't, I will.
a hot gardener helps too!

Can I get insurance on my handbags and shoes? I have quite an extensive 'collection' as FI says...
I definitely love them just as much (almost more) than the FI....

I do see both sides, it just isnt necessary for us...and I hate the thought of it, but you have expressed your opinion so well ...you really have a way of making others see your point of view ... (what do you do for a living Jess... )

I pay extra on my renters insurance to cover my closet- seriuosly- I have an insane amount of coverage- but if you add up what's in there to replace it would be crazy- hopefully I would make better desisions and not buy shoes that hurt so much!

My fi has worked really hard to get all that he currently has. I don't feel or would ever think of taking what isn't mine if we didn't work out. For me that just isn't right.

Re: Pre Nups
I really didn't think anyone was entitled to anything you had before the marriage
a house, a business, etc?
Am I wrong?
We prob should have one- but I doubt we are going to - he has a business- but he wouldn't have it with out my help- so I am going to keep my mouth shut for now

when my FH asked me why I need so much coverage- I told him to look in the closet- I think he almost died- I have my own walk in- he never goes into
but he has noticed I took over about 25% of his-
I need to buy a house and turn the smallest bedroom in my closet- that might be enough space

I told the FI that we needed a two bedroom apartment - he asked 'why, we only need one?' I said 'Duh, where do you think my friends are going?' He said 'What friends?' I said, 'Helllloooooo, Manolo, Gucci, Prada, Pucci, and Louis....'
At that point he rolled his eyes and walked away....

Re: Pre Nups
i would not worry about it.. you 2 are obviously getting married for a reason, and i just think he is making sure he will be secure all his life you u understand that.. i do not think it is a concern so dont make it out to be a fight... not worth arguing about.. there is more to life and you both love one another, . alot of people with lots of money do it.. not a strange thing...

Re: Pre Nups
I think prenups are different than life insurance, or even car insurance. I will after all die one day, and the life insurance is not just for a tragic young death, but for whenever I do die because I likely will leave people behind and they probably could use the financial support. Even car insurance, I don't hope for an accident, but I expect it to happen sometime - it's not unforeseeable. Divorce, for me, is different. Certainly possible, but not something I'm expecting, not even close; actually, right now, I don't think it's even possible and wouldn't be getting married if I did though I understand the possibility as a hypothetical matter. The other kinds of things you insure, I kind of expect, at least a little bit, at some point down the road. But to each his own - I do think it's a practical thing, and like I said before, if I were asked to sign one, I would, and I wouldn't be offended.
ETA: this is a really good thread by the way - I'm so glad everyone's been willing to mull this over, and that everyone feels comfortable enough to share their views.
