Pregnancy/Insurance Question- NWR

Does anyone know if insurance companies treat pregnancy as a 'pre-existing' condition? As in, if you are already pregnant and you try to get insurance, will they cover your preganancy? If not, is there a waiting period from the time of enrollment in which you must wait to become pregnant? Any info would be helpful.

P.S. No, I am not pregnant.

Re: Pregnancy/Insurance Question- NWR

From what I know most do considered pregnancy a pre-exisiting condition. My sister buys her own coverage, and she doesn't have maternity included - if and when she gets pregnant, she couldn't then add that to her coverage - it would have to be done prior to that....

Re: Pregnancy/Insurance Question- NWR

I was pregnant when I switched over to my DH's insurance and it wasn't a problem. I believe the rule was that if you have coverage with another company before you switch companies, then it is not considered a pre-existing condition. If there is not insurance prior to that, it might be hard to have it covered. A friend of mine found out she was pregnant and didn't have insurance so she quickly got insurance and pretty much lied to her doctor about her last menstrual period. You can also check out Medicaid but I think there are income guidelines - here is a link:

The other thing you can do to get more information is go to babycenter.com or pregnancy.about.com and search the forums there for more info.

Re: Pregnancy/Insurance Question- NWR

I was new at my job when I got pregnant. I waited till my insurance came through before I went to the doctor. Luckily I was 9 1/2 weeks pregnant when my insurance came through. If a woman thinks she's pregnant & doesn't have insurance but she's going to get it. She can call her gyno & he can put in a prescription for pre-natal vitamins. That's really all you need before insurance. Then when it comes through make the doctors appoitment. Hope this helps!
