Pregnant BM!

I just found out one of my BMs is pregnant!!! Sooooo exciting!!!!!

Buuuut - how do we deal with this for fittings? We could fit her now, but it's super early (I think, but I'm not sure). She will have the baby before the wedding, but if we were to wait until post-baby, it would be cutting it really close.

What should we dooooooo (after we do our baby celebration dance, lol)?

Congrats to your BM! I would get her measurements now (you wouldn't have to order the dress) and then when you are ready to order the BM dresses give the shop those measurements and maybe order the next size up (in case she has some post baby weight on her). She can always get it taken in if she does indeed lose the post baby weight very quickly!

How would I suggest to her ordering a size bigger? I only ask because I just had another incident with a BM about sizes (there was a whole thread about it - she is usually a 14 but the dresses were running 2 sizes too small so we were thinking maybe she'd need an 18, and my letting her know seemed to depress her ). I'm scared of hurting feelings!!!!!!!

Do you know how far long she is? If she's telling people I'd assume she's 3 months. So...in 6 months she'll have the baby, that would be end of January. That gives her 7 months until your wedding. You probably won't even order your BM dresses until then so it may not even be something you have to worry about at all.

ETA: Or, do you know that's she's way early, like not even 12 weeks yet?

Apparently she is not due until March, so that would give us 5 months if we measured her immediately after the baby's birth. I haven't had a baby, and I don't know how long it takes to be in any sort of condition where you'd want to be measured.

I don't know what to do!

Gotcha....you know, it's different for every girl...not that I have personal actual experience but I've been in weddings w/pregnant friends. One girl lost all her baby weight in like 2 months...she was a rockstar. Others it's really tough for it to come off. Maybe she'll just know to order a size up or two....I'm just thinking she'll probably assume to be better safe than sorry. But you know her better than me. I'm sorry, I wish I could be more help. It's fun when your friends start to have babies!!

Maybe I'll just say, let's get you measured now, and we can order that size for you, or if you're worried about the wedding being so close after the baby is born, we could order a different size and then alter it if necessary. This is my cousin, and I'm nervous because her mom is kind of mean, and is nasty to her about her weight. She is actually not heavy AT ALL, and her mom is still just like 'you could lose a few' on a regular basis. I think I'll just have this conversation with her outside the presence of her mom and just straight up ask her what she wants to do.

One of my cousin's is my BM and is trying to get pregnant by in-vitro fertilization. She decided that if she does, she's going to get her measurements done in October, since by then she will be about 3 months along, will be due in February (I want to order all the dresses in January) and will probably be back down to about that size by the time my wedding comes, and will still have time for alterations! HTH! And congratulations to your BM! I'm hoping to hear the same good news from my cousin soon!

I have the same situation... we waited until she was about 5 months preggo to get her measurements... they measured her as if she was going into a non-maternity dress.
She's usually a 2 and with her measurements they ordered her a 16 just in case she gained a lot of weight. Then they're going to take in the material if she doesn't. Just make sure that they won't rip you off with the alterations - if they have a cap - make 'em stick to it.

CONGRATS!!!

JMO: I would wait until she's about 4 to 5 months... at three months - unless she's carrying multiples, she's not really going to show,or have that much weight gain, for it to make a difference in her measurements. Her boobs might be bigger though.

I read that thread. This is a bit different because it's pregnancy weight, not weight-weight. I was in the same situation w/ my BM. She's pregnant now, will have the baby in Oct/Nov, and the wedding is in April. I just approached it with her one-on-one. She told me the size she'd think she might be, but was on the fence just incase she didn't lose it. So, I carefully suggested to go a size up, and then get it taken in, just in case. She was fine with it. She was almost relieved not to be pressured to have to get the weight off in a short amount of time.

**However, not all will have the same positive response. It is a touchy subject. You know your BM best. Maybe just start the conversation with her, and feel her out. Then go from there.

You could even go get her measured, and let her discuss it with the bridal shop, so it's not coming from you. See what they suggest. I'm sure they've experienced this with other customers.

My sister had a baby 2 months ago! After giving birth, she looked five months pregnant. And, she was very thin before she was pregnant. She said her doctors told her that it is normal to look 5 months pregnant after giving birth. I think, maybe your friend should get measured in a couple of months, and that might be the most accurate size for her.

Hypothetically, if she returned to a size 2, would it be really, really hard to make a 16 into a 2, from the seamstress's standpoint?

I was in the same situation. Because we didn't know how big she would be after the baby was born, the bridal shop ordered a 22. She went for a fitting 2 weeks after the baby was born, which was 2 weeks before the wedding. It turned out she barely gained any weight, but instead of chancing it, they ordered the 22.

Get her fitted now, add on about two sizes larger, you can always take it in, better safe then sorry. I remember a few girls stated there brides maids dresses were to tight, always better a lot larger, can always take it in, you dont want her to pay all of that money and then possibly not fit in the dress.

Re: Pregnant BM!

you really only need 3 or 4 months prior to the wedding, dresses usually come in 6 weeks.. usually you'd need to check with the vendor.. and by that time she will already have had the baby. And she will be able to decide for herself if shes lossing a lot of the weight or not and what to order
