Re: prenup??

FH and I are both starting out with nothing, so anything we earn will be ours, so i see no need in one. However, My dad is proposing to his girlfriend in a couple of months.. we are kinda iffy about her intentions, and turns out they are both initializing one.

I think they are a good idea if your going into the marriage with money or if you will inherit money or property in the future. it's just to save your assets from being taken away if there is a divorce.

Looks like me and FH are the only couple so far signing one

Well we are not doing it...I do see why some people do it and its hard to thinking of a divorce while youre planning a wedding but i think its good for some people. I also think that this should be something discussed thoroughly, some people just come out of nowhere and will be like here sign this prenup, that is wrong and i think that is when peoples feelings get hurt.

FH and i are not doing it, one of us is not coming into this marriage with alot more money than the other, FH does make more money but he also has ALOT to pay off such as his school loans which is ALOT, so basically the amount he does make more it goes to pay off his loan...He pays about $600 every two weeks bc he wants to pay it off soon.
I mean what are we going to get from eachother, eachothers debt lol

i heard ppl also do it if they have debt and stuff like that before they enter the marriage...that way your other half is not responsible for any debt that was acquired prior to the marriage etc.

we havent really discussed this. i guess my thoughts on this are a little rigid...no pre-nup because it gives you an 'out'

Ohhhh didnt know that

exactly.. cuz thats all we'll have too with school loans

Re: prenup??

i didnt know that either...one of my friends told me....i would have never thought of it.

fh doesnt have any debt and i have some of my school loan left but i plan on having it paid off around the wedding/a yr or two after...so unless we'd be getting divorced in a yr or 2 it wont be an issue. Fh's family has $ though so im curious to see if they will ever bring it up...although they are very religious and dont believe in that sort of stuff so maybe not. we'll see!

Personally, if you have any assets, its probably worth it to sign a prenup. Yes, we all hope that our marriages will last forever, but this day in age you have to be careful. If you have assets, I would absolutely suggest doing one. I don't own anything, no house, no stock, and basically a little savings (most of it going to the wedding anyway). All I own is my Elantra (not too impressive) so we arent going to sign a prenup...everything will be aquired after the wedding.

Good luck!

HAHAH yeah with his school loans he has more than i do, so he would probably love for me to take his debt lol...but he has been paying it off, and doing well and should be done before the wedding, i think

We are not having one, but I am not opposed to it. In this world nothing is certain and people do change. If things are going to work out forever, then they'lll work out forever. A prenup shouldn't change that

Re: prenup??

i want to sign a pre nup bc he owns a business with a partner and i feel like he should protect his business ( i know it sounds wierd bc i would NEVER go after his business but since there is a partner involved i think he SHOULD do it)

also i habe selfish reasons. . . i know I would never go after the business BUT what if his partner decides to get married, doesnt get a prenup and that messes up FH's future?

so i kind of wanted to set that example - at the moment FH thinks it isnt necessary but i may try to convince him

i really like his partners gf by the way but i feel like you only really know what goes on in your OWN head no one elses

That is actually a very good idea

Re: prenup??

well in my understanding of pre-nups in response to a couple things...if you both start out with nothing, and then you go from poor to rich together in 20 years, those should be considered marital assets and therefore you would split those....now i'm no legal begal here so i dont know if a pre-nup would protect say money gained from a business that was included in the pre-nup

i also heard someone say once...that yes when everyone is getting married they are in the lovey dovey stage....they are in a place where they think nothing will ever go wrong and things will never change.....happily ever after is the only option. Well sometimes things to change and unfortunately people do have to go through bitter divorces, happily ever after isn't the only option, and a person always says oh I would never go after this that or the other thing. But when that reality sets in a divorce is really going to happen, it changes a person, it changes a person's attitude, outlook, and feelings towards a person. You don't know if you will be malicious, bitter, and wanting to hurt this person as much as you are hurt. If you are married a long time, you may feel you invested yourself and are entitled, when before you are married you would say you would never feel that way. So the person I heard tell me that a person changes when going through a divorce is the reason sometimes a pre-nup is good is the person who changed my mind about them entirely.

Re: prenup??

One of the main reasons for our prenup is FH's business. He doesnt have any partners though.
He started this business way before he met me, when he was just a young child. So i understand his right to protect what he built up, a million dollar company. If i were to leave him, i shouldnt be entitled to that.

Now if he leaves me for a young hot blonde, thats another story, I am definately going to put in my agreement that if he cheats on me, etc, i will be entitled to a certain amount of money since i was accustomed to a lifestyle.

His family also has alot of money, wich he will inherit, and property etc.
If we stay together forever we will enjoy all this, but he has to protect his family money god forbid we get divorced.

well dont worry because even if you sign a prenup, once the guy cheats then its a whole different story

and thats the smart thing...if you grow your separate ways (sometimes it happens) he is protected...but if someone strays (before settling up the marriage) it changes the rules and thats ok

i think its a mature way to go about the situation
