So I dont know if I am being overly cautious but so far I have only looked at prefered venders. I feel more confident booking with them, even though i have been reading a few horror stories here and there about everyone...prefered or not. I dont know....any ideas?

Re: Pressure to book Perferred?
Preferred means that RH gets comission from the vendor if you book with them. In the long run you may end up paying more JMO
I doubt if something where to go wrong with one there preferred vendor the RH will step in and try to resolve for you. So why pay the extra money just to say you booked the preferred vendor.

I haven't booked any preferred vendors. We've just gone with who we like best and trust most.

Re: Pressure to book Perferred?
I checked out 2 preferred vendors from my hall and HATED both of them. I even called the hall to ask how they could recommend this vendor. I walked out of the showroom shaking I was so upset...and the other one...the guy hit on me in front of my fiance. After these incidents that was enough for me!
We only used one - the florist - only because I don't really care about flowers and didn't want to shop around too much on that...

Re: Pressure to book Perferred?
I think the RH's rec vendor list is a great starting point...we worked off of our RH's list and were pretty happy with all those vendors...our photog, CH band, limos and florist were all rec vendors. My RH did step in and resolved an issue for us with our limos...they do pay to be on the RH rec vendor list but they don't take just anyone because it's the RH's reputation on the line too since the vendors represent them. At one point the CH band we used was taken off their list due to issues with them and then put back on when the issues were resolved (RH told me that) so I think it's a good idea to use the list....but I also think you can find great vendors on your own. Our officiant and our videog were not on the RH's list.
eta: Instead of just using your RH's list, I would check the vendors' BBB records...when I did that I found some places that have unsatisfactory records. You'd never know it from the companies themselves when you go and meet them....but I think it helped avoid my having to deal with problems I didn't need. For example, I looked up a bridal salon near me and found that it had several unresolved complaints. I didn't go near it....who needs extra stress during the wedding planning process lol?
