Probably a Controversial Subject: Why I won’t see Passion of Christ – especially with a free ticket. (My reply from last night's Free Ticket post)

Original post by Xelindrya

Ok, awake now.
Sorry about last night.. I started to crash hard. Odd how your body shuts down on you like that. I rambled like an idiot, I hope to be more clear now.

Ok, so yes I refuse to see the movie (or at least pay for it)

Now the tickets are free so you could say “Hey it’s a free movie go for it” But I feel like its not exactly without strings attached. Nothing with religion in my experience has ever come with no strings attached.

The more I hear about bibles being handed out and Church sponsored free tickets the more I get turned off. If the Church (any of them) wants me to see this movie to ‘learn’. I assume they know I wouldn’t actually pay the ridiculous high price of $10 a movie ticket to see yet another interpretation of something I read in the bible I can’t recall how many times and something I see on every other channel for a week during Easter, then there’s GOT to be a catch. I’d rather spend my money on entertainment than seeing Christ crucified, again. They are absolutely right.

Honestly just my opinion but if it were just a promotion for the movie then other folks, OTHER THAN CHURCHES, would offer free tickets. Honestly, it’s creeping me out that churches are so heavily pushing this movie. Besides.. you think they are going to say “Oh I’m sorry, you’re already a believer, I can only give these free tickets to those who would benefit” …? I’m sure most of the tickets will go to church followers.

All that being said, lets say I just had free time and someone HANDED me tickets (cause I can’t imagine giving my name and address to a church, I’d rather get Bridal Junk mail than Church Junk mail). Lets say I go see it. I would feel as if I was inside a church all over again (since I believe any place where those who gather to worship in his name *IS* a church). I would feel like I couldn’t express myself as easily. I’m not a talker in a movie but I’ve been known from time to time to laugh at the stupidity of a movie if I find it funny. Usually I have no problem. But Religious people are taking this movie really seriously. I would feel that I had to watch everything I did and be very careful not to offend. Because A) I DON’T WANT TO OFFEND and B) God help me if I did. See if I’m honest and truthful in my opinions, I have this nasty habit of standing by them. Worse, I don’t back down. When it happens in a church I’m more comfortable, but when it happens in public you must beware. I have learned some folks are religious zealots and take great offense to a person like me who questions their beliefs or expresses their own beliefs that are opposite of that zealot. Zealots can be VERY scary people.

So to summarize (cause I’ve gotten out of hand) .. I was curious about this movie, yes, now I think I’ll just wait until it comes on Cable TV. Free tickets? I doubt it’s actually “free”.

Oddly enough, I will go see the DaVinci Code when it hits theatres hehe.

Actually if the drama of this dies down I may go see it then. When I know the people in the theatre are there just to watch a movie not push a mission or on a quest of knowledge.

It’s Hollywood people! ENTERTAINMENT!

Again, to those who do want to go see it, have fun and send back reviews. Kudos to those who are passing on the info so others who WANT to see it can see it for free. I think it’s a nice gesture by the Churches to pay for tickets.

I think that covers what it. Its an odd ball to try to wrap my mind around and then articulate into some type of understandable sense with words, but I hope I got it out ok.

Hugs to all!
This is just my opinion not really meant to start an argument. I put it on a new post just cause I don’t want to mar the post that was in all honestly just being helpful. (Thanks Kristin - June262004)

I have ask...what is creeping you out about Churchs handing out tickets to this film?

----

Sorry to be so graphic, I just have some pretty strong views about this whole thing.

1.) It's (in MY OPINION ONLY) a bit close to mass church advertising. I can't explain it exactly.. it just freaks me out. Sort of like a bad feeling. It's like broadcast preaching (not the movie, the promotions) and i find any type of pushing a religion whether meant for good or not to be creepy. It's not WRONG per se, just creepy to me.

Wish I could explain better...

Per your second comment, lets just say I understand, it's the same reason *I* have personal reasons that i find an issue with this..

BUT I repeat again, I don't think it's wrong in GENERAL, just wrong for me.

I would like to point out 2 things....

One: revisions of the bible have happened quite a few times throughout history. That is why in recent times, and especially in Vat II, the interpretation of the many versions of the bible has become a major point of controversy. Recently it had been geared toward the ordination of women, but it also covered other things like the three manners of Papal Infallibility. (yes, there are three basic ways something can become infallible)
Also, the bible was written by & translated by peoples of many different backgrounds for many different reasons. The statement about the role of Jews in the crucifixion of Christ has many implications, one of which being that Jesus, as a person, knowingly broke the Jewish Law. It is written about in the Gospels (Matthew & Luke, I believe, but I am not sure.) The second implications is that it was intended to loosen the Jewish Law of the time, and YES to convert the various sects of Jews at that time (such as the Pharisees) to follow the ministry of Christ (which was not yet Catholicism.

Two: although I am the first to say it is just a movie.... I guess it is not. It is an artistic expression of an opinion, it is a visual experience of a culture, or of a collective idea surrounding 'the greatest story ever told.' To me, it seems as though there is only controversy when a movie seems to disagree with another collective culture.

In my opinion, it is more dangerous when these ideas are circulated by people who should be authorities; such as when my professor, who is a priest, says things like ...'Yes, the Jews killed Christ.' This is wy more damaging b/c a trusted person who is directly involved in the matter (as a member of the clergy) is using his power to influence those who seek the truth.

If you go into a movie seeking the truth, then no matter what is said is lost. But if you go into the movie seeking a new point of view that can lead to constructive discussion and scholarship, than it has done its job.

BTW....X..... I would be suspicious of the free ticket thing too. Since I will see this movie, I will take the responsibility of paying for it, that way if I am offended or enlightened, I have no one to blame but myself

I Once you are a Christian, you are not a Jew. The two things are mutually exclusive.

.

This is so not true, myself and so many people are christian and Jewish, there are millions of people who become a Christian and you are still Jewish. There are Messianic Jews, Jewish people who follow ALL religious holidays of the jewish people and believe in Christ, they celebrate, passover, hanukkah, etc..... plus TOns of Ministries whether it is The Chosen People's Ministry who send me things all the time, Ill find their website for you or Jews for Jesus, sounds funny, but they exist. Ill edit this when I find the site but what you said above is simply not true, I go to a charismatic church where there is a Jewish Pastor, Father Dave, who looks just like a Rabbi- others just call themselves 'completed Jews' If you ever read the Old and New testament from cover to cover you will find TONS of references In the OLD testament that refer to Jewish being the Son of God and that is what convinced me.

Here are two links you should look at, it is simply NOT true that you stop being Jewish

Geez, didn't your parents ever teach you ALL not to discuss religion or politics?

We are talking about stuff that happened so many years ago that it is incomprehensible.

We are all entitled to our own feeling but this is getting ridiculous.

OOOh, I forgot.... the Bible is formed by divine inspiration, so only the translations can be revised, not the actual wording. Of course, that would meant that the original texts in the original languages would have to be recovered & re-translated. Supposedly there is a scholarly committee in the Vatican doing this very thing right now.

With regard to the trial and death of Jesus, the Council recalled that 'what happened in his passion cannot be blamed upon all the Jews then living, without distinction, nor upon the Jews of today' (, n. 4).

This is what I was thinking about. I don't think the church has created a huge lie about the Jewish people and printed it in the Bible. I think what did happen was that over zealous priests and ministers were taking the Bible one step further than it goes and actually placing blame.

I did find it on the internet and I read most of it. I don't see ANYTHING in there to even suggest that the Pope is calling the Church out for publishing a lie.

I am still interested in seeing what, I assume to be a Jewish scholar, had to say about it and how that conclusion was drawn.

I'm not saying it isn't important, I just don't think it warrants pages and pages of arguments between women who are hurt or offended or creeped out or confused. It is religion, some of us have one, some of us don't. There is no need to argue.

just a thought?

in the movie 'Jesus of Nazareth' isn't there a scene with the Jewish council - discussing whether they should turn Jesus in? I can't really remember much, but how is gibson's version differing from this?

and please excuse me for my memory - its been a while since I saw J of N...but as a historian...i try to keep up on all religions...

I did NOT say that YOU were ignorant. I said that that ONE part of your post was, and then I provided evidence to back up why that statement was incorrect. There IS a difference. And I see no sarcasm in it. I am quite tired of Christians saying 'We're all Jews' because they are not. Once you are a Christian, you are not a Jew. The two things are mutually exclusive.

Well then...if I may...IMO this is ignorance.

I'm not going to sit here and debate the Catholic/Jewish relations all day. The intent of my post was the explain why this film would be important for those of the Catholic faith to see, and it explains why it's important for my husband to see. Sometimes we just all need to be reminded of why we are what we are (NOT WHY AREN'T OTHER PEOPLE LIKE US)...and this is one way of it happening. Maybe 100 years from now a film will come out depicting the inside of the Twin Towers on 9/11, maybe a violent holocaust film will come out next year...I dunno. I'm not going to knock this before I see it, and I'm not going to let anyone tell me what I should or shouldn't believe. I think it will be healthy for all those that will see it, and to those that won't see it....fine for them too to just talk about it. At least it got us all talking about FAITH right? There can't be anything wrong with that IMO.

Peace and love everyone!

Actually, if you read a little more, you will find that Jesus did NOT fulfill the criteria of being the Messiah as written in the Old Testament. For just ONE example, the Messiah was supposed to be descended from King David. He only has that connection through his father, Joseph. However, Christians believe that his father was G-d, and not Joseph, and therefore they contradict themselves.

I am not going to argue over the validity of Christianity. It doesn't work for me. It works for you and I'm Glad.

HOWEVER, Messianic Jews are not Jews.

The Jews for Jesus movement was created by a man working for the interfaith outreach department of a protestant organization, who realized that some Jews would never convert out of a sense of duty to their heritage. He started this movement to make those people feel okay with it - They could still be Jews, and 'be saved' at the same time. However, being Jewish means believing ONE G-D. Not 3 entities of one god. There is nothing about G-d's Son, there is nothing about worship of a messiah, only that one day The Messiah will come and bring about a messianic age of peace (which, btw, Jesus didn't do, and I KNOW Christians are saying he'll do it next time, but I'm waiting for next time). Belief in Jesus as the Messiah automatically contradicts everything the Jews believe in, thus making Judaism and Christianity mutually exclusive. NEITHER ONE IS BETTER. They are just not one and the same. As for their celebrating Passover and Chanukah, I suppose you are also saying that celebrating Christmas and Easter with trees, presents, and candy can make someone a Christian, yes?

All I am going to say is that this movie is a story about the life of Jesus. It is not discriminating against anybody's religion or faith. When Jesus was put to death..it was his fate to die. EVERYONE put him to death, the romans, the jews, his followers and God himself. If Jesus did not die then the basis for most christian religious would not be here.

If you are uncomfortable in seeing the movie then just don't go. I on the other hand, whether I was religious or not, am definately seeing it because I think the story is fantastic and it should be a great film. And that's all it is...a film, not a conversion tool for the christian faith.

he is from the line of David, Jacob and Abraham
if you read the new testament it tell you that
My Jewish mother even told me that

Ok, I am done now, I just had to ask b/c I never heard of what you said
there are obviously many different beliefs and misconceptions out there that you and many have heard but that doesnt make them all true
