Went into GNC over the weekend and picked up protein shakes. They are the low-carb ones.. Does anyone take them - good/bad? He also recommended Hydroxycut to lose water weight... but aren't they a diet drug?
Basically I've been working out the last 4 months...but am not looking lean (ok, not that I've changed my eating habits! I'm guilty of that!)
Do you drink the shakes instead of eating? I was just gonna have them after the gym to help repair the muscles...
Advice?

Re: Protein shakes....Hydroxycut
I drink myoplex shakes, which are high in protein and low in carbs. I use them as a meal supplement and when I'm being good I have 1-2 a day. I'm also eating 5-6 meals a day, all high in protein. I don't know how many meals a day you're having, but I woul say that you should use them as a meal supplement. It should say on them whether they are a meal supplement or if you're suppose to use them to repair muscles. Which brand are you using?

I got the Myoplex low carb ones... so I should drink the protein shakes instead of eating? Do I drink these even if I don't go to the gym? Does it fill you? Sorry all these questions! Just want to make sure before I open the box!!

Re: Protein shakes....Hydroxycut
I'm a lean body and designer protein girl..
I take them during the week mostly, those and bars and I usually replace them for meals..
I used to take Hydroxycut.. I thought they were VERY good, however, they do have ephedrine in them and if I took too many throughout the course of the day, I'd get the shakes and I couldn't sleep..
There's alot of other ways to lose water weight.

Are 'lean body' and 'designer protein' different brands of protein shakes? If so....where to get them...
I usually get the Myoplex light....are those good?

The Myoplex LIght are very good - I used to take them as breakfast during the week right after my workouts or as dinner and then have a salad. They taste pretty good too!

they are very good.. I get the lean body vanilla (as much as I love chocolate) usually b/c you can mix it with pretty much anything (other than water, I mean).. you can't do that with chocolate..
The designer whey protein ones are good too..
You can get them at any GNC..

Re: Protein shakes....Hydroxycut
To answer your questions...
1) so I should drink the protein shakes instead of eating?
I drink the shakes instead of having a meal. But don't forget I am having 5-6 meals a day.
2) So I drink these even if I don't go to the gym?
I am working out 6 days a week so anytime I have them I have a workout that day. However, you should not drink them right before you go to the gym. According to Bill Phillips (the founder of Myoplex and the person behind the program I do), you should not eat 2 hours before or 1 hour after a workout. He says you should work out on an empty stomach because then you are burning stored fat, not the fat you just took in.
3) Does it fill you?
Very much. I find myself stuffed after having one.

Re: Protein shakes....Hydroxycut
Can someone explain what protein shakes are for exactly? I'm doing Pilates right now, is it ok to take the protein shakes? Will it do any good? Can you only take them if you're working out? Thanks so much.

Re: Protein shakes....Hydroxycut
Protein shakes help dif you in various ways.. drinking them will increase your metabolism (which helps speed up weight loss), helps build lean muscle curbs appetite, increases bone growth, it digests faster delivering nitrogen to the muscles much quicker than regular food, and increases muscle recovery and decreases muscle soreness from your work-out..
unless you are substituting your meals for shakes, you may gain weight.. it's really used for those who work out.. protein helps build lean muscle, which in turn, burns fat..
I don't recommend (for weight loss) shakes if you are eating regularly, not working out AND taking shakes...

Re: Protein shakes....Hydroxycut
For those of you working out (or those who aren't but want a tasty, healthy, candy bar-like treat) try Deluxe Whey's new protein bar. It's called the Detour bar. GNC has them. They're a little pricey (about $3/bar) and they have about 300 calories. I eat them because they have a high amount of protein (I lift heavy) and they're low in sugar. Somehow though, they taste awesome! No weird protein aftertaste.
Sorry, didn't mean to jump in on the protein shake thread, just thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I've tried just about every protein bar under the sun, and this is by far the best. I'm so excited that they finally made a good one!

Re: Protein shakes....Hydroxycut
those are DELICIOUS, BUT a bit too high in calories for me.. They are like 310 (just checked ;)) calories each.. it's too much.. I like the Luna bars.. those are good.. PB&J are good..
Todd has 2 boxes of them in the fridge.. they also have ones called U-Turn bars which are the same makers (designer protein) without the nuts.. they taste like Milky ways
