We got the most adorable king charles cavalier puppy...hes 5 months old now and only 4lbs...such a cuttie...anyways, he doesnt seem to want to eat on his own. If i hand feed him he will eat but if i leave him in cage by himself with the food he wont eat it. we have had him for about a month and this was a problem at first but the vet gave us some special kind of food and he started to eat it on his own. the past week or so he doesnt seem to want to eat on his own! I took him back to the vet and he sai dhes not sick or anything...im not sure what to do I cant keep hang feeding him! has anyone had this problem? or can anyone give me some sugestions?

Re: puppy owners...
in all honesty - STOP HAND FEEDING HIM. lol. we had this issue with both my kitty AND my dog. He will get hungry enough & eventually eat..once he does, he'll be over his little funk he's going through. But u need to stop, otherwise u will be handfeeding him forever. It's like a baby - once u let them sleep in bed with u - they ALWAYS want to and have a need for it...but let them cry through the night for a few days and they break the habit. I know ur worried 'cause he's ur adorable little pup, but if he gets hungry enough he will eat. i promise! Even if he wimpers, do not give in. Just let him wait it out & do it on his own..

Yes I had this problem a few months ago with our ST Bernard. The only thing that worked for us may not work for you. Ontop of the dry food we wopuld put about 1/3 cup canned food. I think she assumed it was a treat because I never had troule again. HTH

My puppy did the same thing!! the thing that worked for us..is don't hand feed him..put everything in his dish (or he will learn to beg) and leave his food out for only 20 minutes..if he doesn't eat it within that time frame take it away..he will learn that he has to eat when you put it out or he will go hungry...this really worked for us..good luck

Where did you get your puppy? We are considering getting a Cavalier sometime in the next year or so. I've been trying to get info on nearby breeders.

I agree, don't hand feed them no matter how sorry u feel. Once they get hungry, they know where the food is. Also if you can, leave some chew bones and treats lying around if you're afraid he might starve. It'll eventually work out, but the minute you make the mistake of hand feeding them, then it'll be a hard habit to break out of them. I had the same problem with my puppy.

Re: puppy owners...
Can I ask a silly question....why would you hand feed a dog? Was he too small to eat on his own?

Re: puppy owners...
The same thing happened with us but at first I was bad and hand fed him a lot! I thought it was soooo cute! Anyway, he did start eating on his own when I stopped but he'll only eat if me or fh are in the same room as him!

Re: puppy owners...
Do you keep his food and water in his crate? If so I would take it out of there. I know-for our dog-she wont eat in her crate AT ALL! Its like her bed and as the saying goes they dont eat where they sleep.
Also as PPs said just ignore it, put the food out and once he realizes you arent going to feed him he will eat, he wont starve to death so try to ignore him

STOP HAND FEEDING THE DOG!!!!!!! That's why he's not eating on his own... Give him a little tough love... put his food down, give him a certain time to eat it and if he doesn't, take it up... the dog will learn to eat on his own... Good Luck!!

Hello...as you can see we have a cavalier as well! They are the best! We had the same problem with Sammy when we got him from the breeder. He was about 4 months old and was very finicky! I can imagine how you feel...it is an awful feeling to think the poor little thing is starving! The breeder assured me he would not starve and to put the food down for like 20 minutes and then remove it....when he gets really hungry he would eat it right away! NO....he persisted being very tough to feed for a while. We tried alot of different things. We finally did give him a small amount of the kibble(we use Merrick brand) and I actually cook fresh meat(groung turkey, chicken etc. and add it to the kibble. He eventually did much better eating...it took a while. He even now at 2 1/2 is not a chow hound! He eats when he decides he is hungry...the food is sometimes out for hours before he gobbles it up! Sorry I was not much of a help...but sometimes it is nice to know others have gone through the same thing. Make sure you don't give the puppy lots of treats in between...they are so small treats will fill them up quickly. Where did you get the puppy?

Re: puppy owners...
okay the fh has the most spoiled little dog in the world.. not only will he NEVER eat anyy dog food but he wont eat peoples food unless we feed him it... and even chicken if it is too big he wont eat it either... it is horrible but the fh & his family have taught the now 3 year old dog to be treated like a baby! He is defensive of people as well... if the fh & I are cuddling he starts barking and wants all the attention-- it really gets annoying but idk its really too late now--- I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE JUST TAUGHT HIM THE RIGHT WAY!!
you can fix it now that its early--- do it before it is too late!!!
hth
p.s here are the pics of the spoiled little babyy-- he is believe it or not a Chihuahua 100% pure breed

YES it makes me feel a lot better knowing that this is very common. someone told me that king charles cavaliers are picky eaters. Im goign to try to stick to the 20 min rule and maybe do it only tree times a day? He didnt eat much today but I kept giving it to him and showing him where it was...we tried in teh crate..out of the crate...we tried switching the sides of the food and water...we tried different bowls...and we tried different dog foods...nothing seemed to make a difference but I didnt hand feed him! I did notice that if I droped dog food on teh floor he would eat it...but as soon as it went into a bowl he lost interest in it...ugh, who knows!!!
