~*~*~* Q O T D ~*~*~*

Original post by GiannisWifey

On this sad and gloomy day, let us not forget those whose lives were lost on 9/11.

For today's question (Part1)
Where were you when the towers were hit and you heard of the attack?? What was your first thought?

I was actually in economics class and our professor came in to tell us the horrible news. School was immediately dismissed and my mind went straight to my mom, who works in downtown Brooklyn and my uncle who owns a restaurant next to Madison Square Garden. It was such an uneasy feeling not know what was going on and not being able to contact anyone (since cell phones had basically no service)......

A neighbor was tragically lost and left behind 2 young children, ages 4 and 2. I always try to say a prayer on this day for those who died that day and those who have died fighting for our country.

This is the first time that I've read every single response to the QOTD.

I didn't know anyone personally involved and was a safe 15 miles away but after reading what everyone wrote I really realize how much i've blocked out.

It was my second day of high school. The principal came on the loud speaker and asked for anyone with family members who worked in the World Trade Center to come to the auditorium. I remember girls having NO clue... they literally skipped out of the classrooms. A little while later they announced it to the whole school, just that two planes had hit the Twin Towers. I had NO idea about the largeness of what had happened. I thought a little plane had hit the towers like a plane had hit the Empire State Building once before. Never in my life would I imagine them falling down. We stayed in school that entire day, and listened to sirens go off the entire day from police and fire departments on Long Island going into the city for rescue. I went into the guidance counseling center to listen to the radio and that is when I heard that there was just a pile of dust and debri. I STILL didn't understand it. It wasn't until I went home and saw it on television that I understood. It makes me sick to think about to this day. I live in WESTERN Nassau County like right by Queens and that part of Long Island had more deaths from the attacks than even Manhattan. It was horrible, EVERYONE lost someone.

I was working in Rock Center at the time. I was walking from PENN to my office when my mom called me on my cell and said that a small plane had hit a tower. She was concerned b/c she didnt know the city and thought I was near the towers. I remember turning to some guy walking next to me that day & asking where in relation where we were was the towers. He said that they we were a good distance away. I relayed the info to my mom and went into my office building. I remember going to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee and then walking past my bosses office and stopping b/c everyone was in there crowed around the TV.

I walked in, turned to the TV and watched for about 30 seconds and the 2nd plane hit. I remember going numb right away. Everyone in the office started screaming. I must of been in shock b/c I calmly turned to one of my coworkers and asking he if she thought there were ppl in the planes.

After that an announcement was made that they were evacuating my building (being in Rock Center) we were a National Landmark. I left my office and met a friend on 3rd Ave and while we were sitting on 3rd waiting for her husband to join us. I could hear the jets flying around and ppl screaming there were more planes in the air and we were under attack.

I had a MAJOR panic attack and my friend literally had to smack some sense in me. When her husband finally got there we told us that he had been working on top of one of the buildings close by and saw ppl jump or fall from the buildings...to this day that still turns my stomach. We had to walk from Midtown to Flushing. I remember while we were crossing the 49th street bridge, I was overcome by this intense feeling of how surreal the situation was, and was transfixed by all the smoke in the air. I bunked at my friends house in Flushing for 2 days...I lived on LI at the time.

FH wasn't FDNY yet but was a Volly and was sent down there for 2 days. He never talks about what he saw while he was down there. I tried once to get him to talk about it but he refused, said he just couldnt do that to me...fill my head w/those images.

The US lost something very important that day, not just our ppl but our innocence. I know for me, the world has never and will never be the same.

I was thinking... OMG this must be a joke!!

I had just dropped my parents off at LGA, they were headed to Vegas to meet with a bunch of family. Needless to say they never took off.. Thank God. I just remember stopping at 7-11 to get milk and the guy wouldn't put the tv on the news. I get home and I get in touch with my parents... they were still sitting on the runway watching the smoke from the city.

Nuts!

I'm sitting at my desk, a 10 minute walk to where the Twin Towers once stood and I am trying not to sob as I read all of the storries of where everyone was.

I was actually in the 7th grade and was eating lunch. i started to notice the lunch monitors were whispering and being weird. next thing i know, everyone in lunch was being placed in to different classrooms for lockdown. no one even would tell us what was really going on.

i ended up calling my mom to have her come pick me and my sisters up from school. i really could not believe that all this was happening. i was shocked.

I'm really close to Ground Zero too. You know, my FH and I work together (we're the office couple). At the time our employer was located in 7 WTC but as I said before, I wasn't working there yet- I was at Pace University. My FH and some of his (or our) coworkers were standing outside when it happened. He saw things that luckily for me, I didn't see but obviously know happened. It really is so sad.

I was in college that day in brooklyn. I had only 1 class that day and was sitting in class and somebody mentioned that a small plane hit a house in queens (obviously way off) and we were all upset about that. I don't think they cancelled classes (it was about 8 in the morning to about 10). I remember going home on the bus and trying to call people on their cell phones and couldn't get through to anyone. At this point, I still had no idea what happened. So after an hour of trying to call people, I figured there was just something wrong with my phone. I walk into my house and the tv is on and all I see is planes crashing into the world trade center, so I just figured it's a movie. Then my dad's wife tells me no this is live tv. My mouth dropped and I just stood there and just couldn't believe it. I was supposed to be off work that day but they called me in. I worked at a supermarket as a bookkeeper. All I remember is that I have never seen the store soo packed - people were running in the store and buying everything - water, food, etc and it was just so insane to see this happening. Everyone was just in a complete state of shock.

One of my sister's co-worker's daughter never made it out of the towers. I was watching tv and saw one of my friends from high school walking around and it turned out he was with his girlfriend who was looking for her mother, who sadly never made it out.

It is really a day that I will never ever forget and I still get chills even thinking about it. My heart and prayers go out to anyone/everyone who has lost someone on this horrible, tragic day.

Re: ~*~*~* Q O T D ~*~*~*

It was my freshman year of College, I went to John Jay and I was asleep. My mom came to my room to wake me up and told me what had happened and I just said OK and went back to sleep, she said NO this is serious WAKE UP and turned on the TV in my room, when I looked and saw what was going on! I was in COMPLETE shock!!!

My ex's brother and I are really close and he was also attending John Jay as a Freshman and it was also his Birthday! We called each other and decided not to go in to school and just spent the day together.

FH and I grew up across the street from each other and have been best friends since we were 13 years old. At that particular time, him and I weren't speaking and I had found out that he was in one of the buildings right across the street!!! I freaked out...I ended up seeing him hours later on the block but we didn't say anything to each other....I am sooo lucky to have him here with me and my heart goes out to EVERYONE he lost someone 8 years ago today!!!!
