~*~*~* Q O T D ~*~*~*

Original post by GiannisWifey

On this sad and gloomy day, let us not forget those whose lives were lost on 9/11.

For today's question (Part1)
Where were you when the towers were hit and you heard of the attack?? What was your first thought?

I was actually in economics class and our professor came in to tell us the horrible news. School was immediately dismissed and my mind went straight to my mom, who works in downtown Brooklyn and my uncle who owns a restaurant next to Madison Square Garden. It was such an uneasy feeling not know what was going on and not being able to contact anyone (since cell phones had basically no service)......

A neighbor was tragically lost and left behind 2 young children, ages 4 and 2. I always try to say a prayer on this day for those who died that day and those who have died fighting for our country.

I was driving to college and I was listening to Z100 - a caller had called in to say that a plane hit the first building and they were saying that it was a little prop plane - but as more information came in I was crying and turned my car around to go home and watch the news. It was a very sad day and we lost my moms cousin a FDNY chief one of the first in the building.

I was actually in my junior year in High School. My H.S was actually very close from their. I was in class I believe it was Biology when I start hearing rumors about a plane crashing near by. I didn't really believe it. But then a few of my classmate were crying and their were kids coming out their classrooms and then the H.S principal announced it over the speaker. I was in shock, I couldn't believe. I was scared, the school had said no one will be allowed to leave school unless our parents came to pick us up. I was nervous didn't know what to do. I was unable to get in contact with any of my family members which got me even more nervous. I live all the way uptown Manhattan, I was very far from home. The trains were crazy and I pretty much was alone. Luckily, my best friend mother and father came to pick her up and they actually let me leave with her.

OMG when we stepped outside their was smoke we walk to the train station and you could see everyone looking at the building on fire so much smoke everywhere. The streets were crowed with people in shock at what they seeing. You could hear the fire trucks trying to head over there as fast as they could. The police racing. I was so scared, so sad for what had happen and was thinking about all those people. I had never in my life seen anything like this. I was just thinking about my family and those poor people. And wondering who would do something like this.

We ended up taking the train, I was suppose to go with my best friend to her house but the uptown A train was working and I decided to head home. The trains were crowed, it was silent. Once I get home my mother had seen me and hugged me so tight and cried. They were all trying to get in contact with me but cell phones were down. I will always remember that day. It was a very sad day for everyone.

I was sitting in class and my professor was like 'oh there's nothing to worry about, it's nothing serious.' I'm sure she regretting saying that after she found out how terrible it was. I was stuck at school until 3 o'clock because the trains we're working and all classes were canceled. My friend's brother went to the same school so she had him on the search for me but we never found each other.

My cousin went to High School 2 blocks away from WTC and she walked to our house over the bridge into Brooklyn and my aunt was freaking out. It was a sad day.

I had actually just started working that week in midtown. I was in my company's orientation in a room that really had no access to the outside world. The person leading the orientation let us out on a break so I walked outside (probably around 10-ish) and thought it was weird that no one was talking and there was smoke coming through the streets. Then, as I walked back inside, a tank parked in front of the builing (I didnt really think anything of it though because it was my 2nd day working in the city - so I really didnt know what was normal and what wasn't...and the reason for the tank that I found out later is that my building in a historical monument...not sure why they were trying to protect the building when there was so much more horrible things happening downtown). When we got back to orientation - the person who was leading the orientation was acting kinda strange...and none of us knew what was going on. An excutive VP then came in the room and told us to go call our families....of which we were really confused about. He then realized that our orientation leader never told us what had happened down in the world trade center.... Needless to say I was kinda freaked out because it was my second day at work in NYC and I didnt really know anyone in the city at that time. Eventually I made it to Penn Station to catch the LIRR home and got one of the first trains out of the station. There were some people in Penn who had obviously run from the falling towers...it was so eerie and scary. My heart goes out to all those who were lost, and the families of those who were lost...

I was in high school, I had a free and I was waiting with my friend at the nurses office for her to be picked up. I remember we had tv's that were on and my friend myself and the nurse were watching tv. We saw the planes crash into the towers and I remember the nurse freaking out because her son in law worked in the first tower. I remember her freaking out because she couldnt get through to anyone.

I was in my 3rd period English class. After my teacher announced that there had been an 'accident involving a plane at the WTC' he said anyone who had family in the area could go down to the office and try to get in touch with them. My father worked across the street at the time and saw the whole thing happen. Fortunately, he was fine, just shaken up although I didn't get to speak to him until later on in the evening.

I had graduated college that May and was unemployed still. I was sleeping at the time, but my mom called me from work and told me to turn on the television. I didn't know what was going on, I was just staring at the screen when all of a sudden the second plane hit. My first thought was of my best friend's boyfriend, who worked in the WTC. I tried to call her but couldn't get through - she's a nurse in manhattan. later that day i finally got in touch with her, and she still hadn't heard from him, she was an absolute mess but her hospital was a trauma center so she had to stay at work. Luckily, he showed up late that night, he had walked home to 87th street. He was in bad shape for awhile (but he proposed 6 months later and they now have a beautiful daughter). Sadly, I lost a friend from college. After 2 days of no one hearing from him... and then 3... then 4...
It had been his first day of work there.

I was a senior dorming at CW Post and I was in my room getting ready for my business class and my roomie and I were watching TV and and couldn't believe it. When the second plane hit I was in Hillwood Commons getting coffee. I watched it on the news. Immediately after I went to class and I remember my professor canceling class and closing down the school. The school announced that they were closing the campus. We watched the news all day in our room with a bottle of wine and the phone in our hands.

It was my second day of class as a full time graduate student at Pace University downtown. I had just got out of the subway and was a few blocks away from the WTC at the time of the first attack. Stupid me, instead of going back home, I went into Pace because I just thought (or convinced myself) that it was a terrible accident. Then the second plane hit and I couldn't go anywhere (I think the subways stopped around that time)..but i felt sick to my stomach. Then Pace University literally shook when the first tower fell. At that point, I really felt like I was going to get sick. I remember students and a few teachers panicking and screaming. I have to say, the school as a whole handled it very well. They advised everyone not to go outside at this point and told everyone to head down to the basement. I didnt have a cell phone at the time. And no one's was working so I couldnt even borrow one. Everyone was calling people on the school's pay phones. I was the only one in my family in Manhattan. When I finally called home, my father picked up and I could tell he was worried sick.

I was in second period chemistry class....our principal made an announcement and we all thought it was an accident, we had no idea what was going on until 5th period or so....

I was so worried about everyone especially my dad! I remember calling my mom who was eerily calm, and said he was opkay (i find out last night, that she could not get in touch with him for hours and was in a panic the entire day)

I was injured that year in gymnastics, one of the other coaches was out...my coach asked me to help out, it was so hard as 6 of the girls were worried about thier parents, all of whom worked in the towers....

it was so surreal....

most of them lost thier one or more of thier parents....

My cousins made it out of the building just as it was collapsing...

ALWAYS remembered...NEVER forgotten...<3

I waa 22 and working my first real office job. My mom called and told me what happened and I was like yeah ok whatever because she was one who sometimes over exaggerated so I didn't think anything of it. It was right before the 2nd plane hit. My boss runs in the office and is like you have to come in my house and we ran in and watched live as the second plane hit. I remember feeling scared because my family and friends all worked in the city.

I really think this day should be made into a federal holiday.

I was in the city when it happened, at school. Downtown.

I heard someone say that some planes were hijacked and heading toward Manhattan, but I didn't really believe it because that's ALL they were saying.

Then I got outside and everyone looked...dazed. I didn't know what was going on, so I went inside the school to see if I could find the guy I was dating at the time, and I did. We went back outside and people were saying that the towers were hit.

My first thought? 'Oh my god, my aunt works on the 92nd floor!!!!!!!!!!'

Someone said one of the buildings fell.

I kept screaming 'WHICH ONE? WHICH ONE? WHICH ONE?' and a passerby grabbed me by the shoulders and said 'honey, BOTH of them fell'

I collapsed into the middle of the street, got up and ran back into the school to find my favorite professor. I wanted to know if I could use her phone in her office, but I couldn't find her.

My dad's a cop, and I was terrified that he was in there too.

I finally found a bank of payphones and got through to the school that my mom was a nurse at. The lady who answered told me that she was waiting for me to call - my mom couldn't take the call because she was counselling students whose parents worked in the towers, but that she told the receptionist to tell me two things - one, that my aunt never made it all the way to work that day and two, that my dad was going to be stationed in Brooklyn for the day.

Relief. Kind of.

I'm 20 years old. In the city, the city that I love and adore and know like the back of my hand, surrounded by classmates and a boyfriend and friends....but my sister is 50 blocks uptown on the west side on her second day of high school. She's yet to explore the city on her own, doesn't know things like I do. I walked crosstown and uptown to get to her. She was pretty shocked...crying and stuff...but once I got to her it was comfort, instantly.

We cried...days and days of crying...attended memorials for a friend's father, a fireman around the corner from our house, a firehouse in Maspeth that lost so many...

I was in between classes in 8th grade. I was on my way to my 6th period class when I saw my best friend walking towards the door with her older brother (he was in high school at the time) and his girlfriend and I was like 'What's going on??' and her bro was like 'come on, let's go, we're under attack' and I left with them to go home. They lived a few houses away so I went back to my house and my dad and sister were watching the tv and we watched the 2nd plane hit the building..

I was working for The Journal News at the time which is the major paper for Westchester County. I was actaully on time for work that day, for once, and was at my desk when I heard a 'small'plane had hit the Trade Ctr. Since I worked for a newspaper,we had lots of TVs displayed around the building, so I went and joined the group of people starting to watch the live coverage. It then became clear that this was not a small plane, nor an accident. The rest of the day was spent in front of the TV with about 40 others on my floor where I watched live, the second plane hit and both buildings collapse.I can not describe the sickening, numbing feeling of watching those towers collapse and realizing that thousands just died.I remember trying to get intouch with my dad who worked in Manhattan and not being able to get thru on the phone. The crazy thing is I can remember vividly what an absolutely beautiful, clear, sunny day it was that morning before this happened and our world changed forever.Even today, whenever we have a bright, crisp sunny day like that, I am brought back to my memories of 9/11. That night, I remember being able to see the remainder of the towers smoldering from the roof of my building. Since I live right off the Hudson, from the top of my building, you can see the NYC skyline.
I do not know anyone personally who worked in the towers, thank God, but a man who went to my Chruch and worked for Cantor Fitzgerald died there. I remember seeeing hom at Church everyweek with his wife and three kids.

My father and I were both home from the hospital, he had just had surgery and I had a nasty case of mono.
My mother and I had watched Maury the morning before and they were doing paternity tests, the results were supposed to be given on tuesday, as my mother works on tuesdays she taped it. I was asleep on the living room floor (my kidneys and liver were inflamed so I couldn't walk up the stairs). I woke up, put on channel 11 at around 8:55a and the news was on, so I turned to my father and asked what was going on (he doesn't watch too much tv) and he said 'i don't know, something about a plane crash or something'. So I watched.. LIVE... when the second plane crashed and I'll never forget my fathers reaction. I have all the live news footage on tape. I just remember my friends calling me from school asking me what was going on because I was the only one 'on the outside', the school was on lockdown and they were getting little information.
A very good family friend ('uncle') was a captain for a fire department, his group of 7 split, 3 died, 4 were trapped for 14 hours. He was one of the 4. I know a few people who worked in the towers, my FBIL, and a few friends. They all made it out ok, but emotionally they are scarred. We rarely talk about the day...

I was a junior in college and had a class that started at 8:50 so in the car on the way over i noticed that all the radio stations were not playing music but i was in my own little world and just popped a cd in. When i got to class someone had said that a plane had crashed in the twin towers but they thought it was an accident class when on and none of us knew what was going on. after class i got in my car and headed to work still not knowing what happened as i was getting on the southern state going east I noticed that westbound was DEAD stopped there were police officers walking up and down it ... it was at this point that i was like what is going on. When i got to work my mom called me all upset because she was trying to get in touch with my dad who was in the city (she eventually did and was ok). But again there was no tv at work... I don't think i realized how serious it was until I got home and saw all the news coverage.... Then I found out a friend of the family's son had died he was a firefighter and 2 girls I coached in cheerings dad had died.......

I will never foget....
