QOTD 10/6/10

Original post by rendel

This video and song has inspired a question: http://www.pp2g.tv/vZ3x9anY_.aspx

What do you believe it means to love someone unconditionally? Has there been obstacles in your relationship with fh that you both have overcome together? If so what were they? Do you believe that this or these obstacles have made you a stronger couple?

For me it was when I was diagnosed with MS. FH shared this story with Rev Deb and it made me cry when we were in her office. FH told Rev Deb, that he believed that my family was unsure of his stand on the matter and gave him the option to leave many times. I am sure it was not an easy thing for him to swallow, that my health is unpredictable and that he may have to take care of me as we get older. I don't know how well I would be able to take this news. So, I would have to say that loving someone unconditionally means loving that person through all the changes life throws at them.

FH and I have been together for about 4.5 years now. When we met, I was a Type 1 diabetic that didn't really take care of myself and FH was in major credit card debt. Not the best of circumstances.

For a while, I was passing out often due to low blood sugars and he would take care of me and learned all about T1 and we sat down and made the decision that I had to throw myself into getting my sugars more stable. That was about 3.5 years ago, and I am doing great now (although I sometimes get obsessed with it, but I guess it is better than ignoring it?). FH moved in with me at our 9 month mark to save money, and he has slowly worked his way out of debt.

Then he lost his job, and decided to head back to grad school. He was mentally not in a great place, and I am the one that gives him a solid rock to lean on, and he supports me in different ways. I rarely have a mental breakdown, but he can get into his own head. While we can have some epic blow outs, we are made for each other.

I believe when you love someone unconditionally, it means you are there for each other through thick and thin, sickness and health, no matter what comes across our way.

There have been many obstacles in our relationship since we started going out almost 6 years ago. Just to name a few: I was in very bad debt, I had health issues, I had dropped out of 2 different colleges, and the list goes on.
FH has stuck by me through everything. He has been helping me out financially even though he is struggling himself with money and he is always giving me that extra push to do something with my life.
We have also had many deaths in our families since we have been together and we were both there to help each other through it all.

I definetly believe these obstacles have made us a stronger couple and we know how to get through mostly everything that has been thrown our way.

Love is absolutely unconditional... it's holding someone's hand when everything is going down hill and telling them everything's going to be ok. It's that comforting hug when you've had a bad day and it makes you feel better.

FH and I have had a really rough time this year. Between battling his exwife for custody of his daughter (which we now temporarily have custody) He had lost his job in march and everything went pearshaped. It put so much strain on our relationship living paycheck to paycheck, he took a job at McD's just so we could pay for gas and rent. We were barely surviving for a while couldn't afford food and had to mootch off my parents. It came to a point where we were trying to sell our prized possessions just to make ends meet including my engagement ring and his cello. Everythings been one disaster after another. I'll never forget the one night where i finally saw FH break down and cry because we were $500 short for rent and I had a severe tooth infection that was causing me extreme pain and we couldnt afford to have my tooth pulled.... IT was actually devistating to both of us at the time. It was hard getting through it but in May he was offered a job and we've been slowly recovering ever since. And every day he thanks me for sticking by him through everything and not walking away like other people would have.

Ren, great question. And its 10/6 for 20 ,ore mins so i can still answer!
Everyones replies are great, we all have amazing FH.
Not that i already didnt know i had an amazing man, but this past summer i had a huge cancer scare, i was out of work for 3 weeks, and FH stuck by me day in and day out. He took such good care of me, when i called him from the doctors office, since they were sending me to the ER, he was literally there within 5 minutes. He held my hand as the dr's told me what I was going to live with for the rest of my life. FH looked at me and said 'we can get married tomorrow if you want' ... i kept thinking 'how can i marry this man knowing iam going to become a burden to him eventually' ... but this is unconditional love, to go in, willingly, despite knowing that it is not always going to be easy. Iam getting better each day, and he makes sure i take my meds, and keep my dr's appts, we had to change so much of what we were used to doing, but i would do the same for him.
Ladies we are all very lucky!!

FH and I have been through soooo much

But most importantly we had to overcome religious differences and his parents not agreeing with our relationship due to those differences.

FH has fought so hard to be with me and to prove his love for me to his parents. To stand up to your parents and tell them, I love this girl and I'm going to be with her no matter what...really shows unconditional love to me.
