*~*~* QOTD 6/21/10 *~*~*

Original post by futurestevens

Hi Ladies!

I'm so excited to be your BOTW! Thank you so much to Kedra who not only nominated me, but also alerted me to the nomination via Facebook last night- you're the best!

Ok, now down to business.

As I was driving to work today, I noticed that I forgot my ring at home (isn't that the worst?!?) so it got me thinking about all of our gorgeous rings. So today's QOTD is:

Did you help pick out your ring? Did you go ring shopping with FH, leave pictures of your dream ring lying around, or did FH pick it out on his own?

Gorgeous ring and nails!!

At first, I wanted a cushion cut ring and FH didn't really like how they looked and I didn't want to get a ring he would be ashamed to show off. So we found a brilliant cut stone with a pave band and that's the one!!! We love it! I picked it out! :)

The diamond from my engagement ring is from my grandmother's engagement ring. When she gave us her ring she told us that she wanted us to get a new setting. She wanted the ring to be ours. So FH and I went out one day to look at ring styles. I tried on this one ring and fell in love. It was unlike anything I had ever seen and had such an antique feel that I felt really went with the stone. I thought it was too much money and told FH that we would keep looking. We never went out again and when he proposed I couldn't believe that it was the ring!

I was there when FH picked out my ring. My sister had a bad experience with her engagement ring and didn't get the one she really wanted. She actually ended up with the one she really HATED!

I picked it out and tried it to see if it needed to be sized and all that fun stuff. But I was glad because I got the ring I truly wanted!

The diamond was my grandmothers and months prior to his asking me I explained what I liked and he paid enough attention and got it right all on his own!

Aww good question.

FH and I never even talked about getting married, and I didn't ever bring it up to him. I thought about it, but I figured things were fine the way they were, we already have a baby and live together, plus I was engaged once before and it was just a bad bad relationship and I really didn't want to push anything.

He proposed at my friend's wedding in april after the reception in our hotel room. He picked the ring out completely on his own, and I was TOTALLY shocked! I had no idea at all.

But FH did an amazing job, all on his own. He has great taste!

FH had my ring custom made. He knew I always wanted a marquise cut, and he knows I love vintage and antique.

he did such a great job!!! i was so surprised!

Actually....FH and I picked out the ring seperately. It was really funny. I found the ring online and showed it to my mom and I said, That's the ring I want. Two weeks later FH proposes with the same ring. My mom had NOTHING to do with it either, she said she never told anyone. Hubs told me he looked at the ring and said that's the one!. lol. Fate :)

And I havent worn that ring in a week because I had to send it away to be re-dipped. BUT i get it back tonight!!! I felt soooo naked without it!!!

(sorry, long... there's a lot that went into my ring!)

To say that FH picked out my ring on his own is something of an understatement. I don't buy jewelry and the only thing I really wear is my timex watch (the kind with a velcro strap). I can't even figure out what earrings to buy my sister for her birthday in 9 days. There's no way I was going to be any help to him.

We started talking about rings when I was in England, he was traveling around China for months, and it was the first time we'd really been apart like that. So he research e-rings when he missed me. I have small hands and I wear gloves everyday in lab... I wanted something delicate and low-set. Other than that, I had no idea.

We were both intrigued by lab diamonds -- they avoid the price fixing and humanitarian/ environmental issues of the deBeers diamond cartel and there are really nice parallels to my PhD research. He spent a year contacting a ton of companies to find out about their technology, colors, sizes, etc. His chosen company mailed him a bunch of different diamonds so that he could see the colors (he picked a light blue one, also particularly appropriate to my research)... he spread them out on my sister's bed -- next door to mine! -- and looked at them with her. And then mailed them back uninsured

His mom got the stone set at their family jeweler in Ohio who made the setting to his specifications. And then she brought it to Panama where we all went on vacation. FH didn't see it all put together until a few days before he proposed!

Strangely my favorite part: I found out that he'd bought the diamond because a wire transfer letter addressed to him came to my flat (as do the rest of his bank statements). It gave a very specific $ amount for 'one blue diamond for Benjamin R.' I scanned it and emailed it to him... he saw it as accidentally proposing by bank statement and was markedly less amused.

wow, i'd love to see a blue diamond! do you have any pictures that you wouldn't mind sharing?

that's amazing that FH went through such a long process to make sure he was getting the perfect ring for you!
