QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
In no way should this lead to personal attacks and remember, no need to lug along pushing for a particular candidate (something that frequently yields nonsense and disrespect) -- I am asking about your specific issues -- are you grateful or are you concerned about something particular given the outcome. Let us all please remain respectful as we state opinions. For me, I am concerned that with the Republican majority along with the current administration, that many issues of civil rights and privacy will erode. I worry about the new appointees to the Supreme Court and the fact that we will move in the direction to overthrow Roe V. Wade and block scientific research.

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
I am concerned that the economy will continue to decline, that terrorism will be even more of a global threat, and that too many innocents (U.S. and foreign) will die in a war that will not soon come to an end. I'm also concerned that this country seems to be owned by not only the rich, but rich FAMILIES. JMO.*Peace*

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
My # 1I'm worried about the possible appointment of 4 supreme court judges who will be on the bench for a very LONG time and the effect it will have on future court cases and rulings.
Has anyone ever been to see a case tried at the Supreme Court or studied some of the major cases? It's such an interesting process and I'm scared of what 4 people can do to the majority decisions ....
I took a seminar in college called 'Order in the Court' and we studied the economic, political, and social implications of major cases from 1600 - today ... it blows your mind how much an effect on our lives these 9 people have.

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
well- it's still not over yet!! I am grasping at straws...Bush being back in office worries me, cause there will be no changes..
1- war is still going on and I don't see us accomplishing anything
2- the economy is still in the sh*tter and i am worried about consumer spending and the job market
3- right to choose-- Republicans do not believe in this and I think that is so so wrong
4- healthcare- there needs to be some regulation here-- it has gotten completely out of hand
5- I can't believe I need to look at Bush for another 4 years.. I think the country just really needs a change

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
I am quite pleased with the outcome and even more so that so many Americans went out and voted yesterday. I'm thrilled to have a President in office who is not a proxy for popular opinion but rather makes decisions based on what he believes is best for the country, a president who is not a waffler and who stands up for America in the face of the new world landscape.Give you 2 guesses who I voted for

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
I am worried on an economic level. FH has been looking for a job for months, and is now applying way below his qualifications, and cannot even get hired in a stationary store for $8 an hour. The job situation is out of control, and if Bush continues in the same direction, it is only going to get worse. We pay an obscene amount of money for health insurance out of my paycheck every week and i come home with practically nothing after a week of slaving. Even if we do get sick, we have a big co-pay. SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE IN THE WAY THIS COUNTRY DEALS WITH HEALTH CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believed that Kerry had a plan in that department. Premiums will continue to go up in the next 4 years under this administration.
I worry that more innocent people are dying in Iraq for their 'freedom.'
I worry that Gas prices are going to continue to soar until there is a full blown crisis. And Because W does not support scientific research the way Kerry would have, we are not going to see advancements in energy technology within the next 4 years.
I worry about our international standing. I don't think the world likes us very much right now, to put it nicely, and I don't think is going to change with Bush still in office.
In closing,
I worry that everything that has gone downhill under this administration will continue to, and in 4 years, our country will be in much worse shape than it is now. Out of respect for the Bush supporters, I do hope he recognizes that this country is DEEPLY divided and he needs to make some changes in the way he does things in order to bring some hope back in....

I'm so depressed right now.

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
Kerry just called President Bush to concede the election, so it is officially over! Thank you God.I am pleased with the outcome. Personally, I felt Howard Dean was a much stronger Democratic candidate than Kerry.
I completely understand the Republican conservatives so I know exactly what is going to happed within the next four years. I don't agree with all of it, but at least there will be no surprises.
What I am surprised at is the fact that the democrats Tom Daschell got replaced by a haunch, right ring conservative. How the heck does that happen? Two of the 4 new rebuplicans in Congress are the most right wing folks that even resident Bush is afraid of. These guys believe that single mothers nad gays should not be teaching in the public schools because of the 'message' it sends.
Now if that doesn't say something about what the voters are thinking, then nothing will.
I am pleased that there is a possibility that Roe v Wade will be overturned, or at least changed. I know many women here will be offended by that, but it's just an issue that I feel strongly should be changed, not completely banned, just changed.

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
Where to start...I worry about Bush continuing to erode our environmental laws
I worry that there won't be checks and balances on the Presidency given that there is a Republican House and Senate and Bush is likely to stock the Supreme Court with conservatives when the expected retirements are announced.
I worry that since Bush won't be running for re-election in 2008 or need to cater to opinion polls as much, he will push a very conservative agenda over the next 4 years.
I worry in general about the ideological split in the country and how so many Americans could vote for someone who took us to war under false pretenses.
I worry about the men and women fighting in Iraq and that there is no plan to bring them home

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
1) The war in Iraq, I just don't see a peaceful solution in the near future2) The Supreme Court appointments, one thing this election did prove is that the majority of the country is right of center, my fear is that the religious right will influence the choices and possibly lead to reversals of things like Roe vs Wade.
3) Our health care system, especially prescription costs. My grandmother lives on her social security and almost 65% of her check goes to her medications. For me, being that I work for a private company (ie no union) each of the last four years my co-payments for doctor visits and medications have gone up atleast 10 % each year. FH & I would be considered part of the working class, because our salaries would fall slightly under the middle class estimates, how can we save for a house, have children, save for college etc when basic cost of living continues to rise.
4)The Republicans have no one to keep them in check.
5) Our international standing, not many respect Bush. My brother's gf works in England and travels often through Europe, there is alot of resentment toward Bush and in turn us (America).
6) Bush doesn't have to worry about being relected he WILL push a consevative agenda.
7) Concerns regarding Home land security, are we going to see more infrignements on our everyday freedoms?
8) Immigration, we are a land of immigrants, how will Bush/Republicans work to insure that they are given the same opportunites past generations have? How can the land of the free close it's borders? should we?

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
Less see- How much space do I have? HmmmmFears:
Roe Vs. Wade will be overturned when they replace the majority of the Supreme court with conservative judges
Stem Cell Research will be halted even though us wonderful Californians who are really broke and don't have this money to fund it agreed to allow it
Fiscal recession or even possible depression- California is essentially bankrupt and NY isn't far behind
Higher taxes for those of us not fortunate enough to make over 200K
A war that will match or exceed the Vietnam war in futility over the long haul
No child left behind policy to be renamed No teacher left untortured since it is not benefitting anyone!
Possibly losing my job since we will no longer be able to fund school counselors while our school districts continue to fall behind in debt
Health care reduced to over the counter medicine except for the wealthy few
A moral majority run by fundalmentalist Christians that will overrun our country will their beliefs based on religious ideals-the exact opposite reason WHY our country was founded in the first place!!!!!
I could go on and on but I am really starting to scare myself. I can't believe I am going to marry and produce children in a country such as this- I am saddened today.

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
JMO - I am devastated. I cannot even put it into words. I feel like people felt when Kennedy was shot. I feel deflated. I just am making a promise to myself to be very involved and take civil action whenever I can. We cannot have another four years like the ones we just had.Bush did get the majority of the vote. I won't argue with that. What I will argue with are his policies and the way his administration has conducted itself throughout the past 4 years and during the election process. He mobilized his base by putting a vile homosexual ammendment on the ballot in the most hotly contested races. This president was picked by the religious right and it is the Democrats' fault for not mobilizing their own base. That said, just allowing this administration to continue acting in the same fashion is irresponsible for those of us who are horrified by the actions of this administration over the last 4 years. We cannot allow the next 4 years to be like the last. Bush getting up and acting like he swept in is an indication of his arrogance, lack of intelligence, and lack of depth.
Those of us who understand what is at stake and how this election was run need to see this as a sign that we have to mobilize. Being permissive will not do us well. The Republicans were not all Emerson-like during this campaign and we cannot afford to be. Watch this administration like a hawk, and voice your concerns from here on in. It is your right as an American.

You are so right. We need to continue to be vigilant. The saddest thing that I see happening is that we are now moving into a period where we there will be no real separation between church and state because many Americans voted for Bush hoping that he will legislate their morality and religious beliefs on other Americans (gay marriage, abortion).
For the many Americans who voted for Bush based on one issue I hope they are ready to deal with the repercussions of their choice. When the healthcare premiums take up a larger chunk of their incomes and when they realize the human and economic toll that an ongoing offensive in the Middle East will take on this nation, perhaps they will come to understand their choice and really begin to question the political rhetoric they bought from Bush.
But the way I see it, a lack of empathy and a lack of concern for the rights and experiences of other people guided vote choice for many Americans in this election. I think that many people were very much guided by self-interest, not the desire to come together as a nation to preserve our democracy. I am very afraid about what the next four years will bring.

I am happy with the outcome of this election. I feel that what will be will be. Whether it was Kerry or Bush. He is not a miracle worker, no one is. Everyone was under the influence that Kerry was the second coming or something. Rome wasn't built in a day and people have to understand that this war cant be won over night. I am in favor of our President.

''I'm thrilled to have a President in office who is not a proxy for popular opinion but rather makes decisions based on what he believes is best for the country''WOW- scary way of looking at it I think!
To think that your president doesnt care what you think and will do just what he wants is NOT the purpose of a republic.
