''I'm thrilled to have a President in office who is not a proxy for popular opinion but rather makes decisions based on what he believes is best for the country''
WOW- scary way of looking at it I think!
To think that your president doesnt care what you think and will do just what he wants is NOT the purpose of a republic.
Agreed. I would call this a dictatorship - not a democracy!!! Scary is right....

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
you cant honestly believe that if kerry won things would be so much better, he is not a miracle worker and being a president is not an easy job... I tend to take what the politicians say with a grain of salt... I am glad that Bush won, I want him to succeed in this fight with terrorism, I might be wrong but what human isnt, we are not perfect...

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
I try to stay away from political discussions because I get too emotionally involved but this one was presented in such an adult way. Thank you DebMaher. My main concerns are:
*Roe vs. Wade being overturned, there is such a high chance of this happening, esp with Chief Justice Rehnquist possibly being out. My body, my choice. Please leave it up to me and my God, it's not up to a bunch of old men to decide what I do. Wheter it's morally wrong or not it's something I will have to face when I meet Him.
*Foreign Affairs - mainly our relationship with other countries...N. Korea, Palestine. the Mid East
*Poverty - it seems that the rich will continue to get richer (can someone say Haliburton?, no competition contract granted!) while the poor will continue to live in misery.
I agree with the ckgmwedding, I can't think of wanting to bring children into this world. It seems almost selfish of me...I want to have kids but I will be bringing them into this crappy world.
And so many other ones, that I'll just stop before I have nightmares.
ETA: Giuliani is not the answer to anything. He became 'America's mayor' after acting like anyone in his position would act following the most tragic event on American soil. As a New Yorker and a minority, his 'better, cleaner' NY came at the expense of minorities. It was during the era of the 'wild, unstoppable' NY cop. I don't mean to offend anyone...especially those with police officers in their family...they're not all bad, but it's the ones that aren't good that were allowed to act wildly during Giuliani's term. There were way too many unexplained shooting of minority men during his term. And what is he doing by blaming the soldiers for the Abu Graib (sp?) fiasco? Is he serious?
Sorry, that's why I don't talk about politics!

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
I have been so depressed all day over the results of this election. What I fear most are what a lot of posters have said:
- Roe. v Wade moving towards being overturned, being Bush will probably have the opportunity to appoint 3-4 Supreme Court Justices over the next 4 years.
- Bush's stand on stem cell research
- The lack of seperation between (Bush's) church and state.
- IRAQ
- A possible draft (in addition to the current back door draft) in the next 4 years....I don't see us leaving Iraq anytime soon, so Bush will need more soldiers over there. How is he going to do that? People are not going to be willingly lining up to enlist with the chaos over there in Iraq.
- The economy
- The lack of checks and balances with a Republican administration, a strong Republican congress, and the Supreme Court.
- Our standing in the international community.
- The divisiveness of the country.
I shudder to think of what is to come in the next 4 years.

I'm very worried about the economy, continued support of vouchers in schools, as well as a ban on gay marriages. I hope that doesn't happen, I just want my friends to be happy.

Nevermind, not worth it. Doesn't matter in the end since Bush won.

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
A nice summation of how I, and probably others of us, feel right now. From The New Republic....THE MORAL OF THIS STORY: According to the voter breakdown that CNN is currently hawking, the top reason that Bush voters gave for supporting their guy was not the economy, not Iraq, not even the war on terrorism. It was 'moral values.' That's right, with American soldiers dying overseas, Al Qaeda still gunning for us at home, the deficit spiraling, the gap between rich and poor growing, Social Security on the brink, etc., etc., Bush's reelection was driven by a bunch of folks freaked out over the thought of gay marriage and stem-cell research.
God save the republic.

yeah, it's a pretty surprising cover - the mirror is a tabloid rag - kind of the equivalent to the NY post in that it wears its politics on its front page, but still i was pretty shocked to see it.

Re: QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you
Don't be shocked. If you watch any global media... BBC World for example, you will see that some of our most staunch allies have been scratching their collective heads for the last four years. Even the British (who are 99.9% of the time are with us) are confused so much so that Tony Blair is hanging by a thread... the British people are not happy that he is with Bush and the way he is going about handling this. In a parliamentary system they can call for an election, they don't have to wait four years. Our administration is leading the coalition and while they ask for support (troops, supplies, etc) they refuse to consider any other of our coalition members' advice as to our methods or game plan for this war.
While in Italy this summer I couldn't find one English speaking Italian who agreed with our methods... I must have asked at least a couple of dozen and from various parts of the country. Many countries that are in the coalition want out and they are pressuring their leaders.
Our American media is not covering the protests. I watched the coverage of both conventions on BBC World and CNN world (satellite, comes from London). They didn't even look like the same event when you compared them to the American media's coverage.
We are victims of propaganda in our media (FOX News especially). What makes it worse is that our American public isn't even aware that it is propaganda, at least in other countries (USSR, Cuba, China, WWII Italy) they know/knew. That's what is scarey. WE have to be more inquisitive and not accept everything as truth.

Um, that's not what I said. If you want a simple proxy for public opinion, why have a president at all?? We should just vote on every single thing that goes on in this country, right?![]()
