where were you when the towers were hit and/or you heard the news? what was your first reaction? how has this tragedy impacted your life?

i'm off to some wedding appointments and school, but let us not forget those who lost their lives on 9/11. thank you to all of the police officers, firefighters and troops for doing everything they can to keep us safe <3

I was in 10 grade in my college level math class and it was the first day we met the professor from the college-- I remember finding out my x's (one of my good guy friends) dad was in the tower) we spent the whole night at his house it was horrible. i remember everyone just waiting while cars pulled up to see if it was his dad. I didnt go to school for 2 weeks after 9-11

there are so many people to remember and thank- all those who lost there lives as service men that day, as every day people, in the years since, or in the war since. And all those who have just been affected in every day life because of it

Freshman year of college... Classes were stopped... and we all went to the roof of my dorm to see it all unfold (you could see it from my dorm since it was such a clear day). Crazy how things change so quickly

3rd period, 2nd day of my senior year of high school in my business management class.....

They had just done a lot of construction on the high school and as a result all the cable was out (no internet, no tv)

My teacher mentioned that something was going on but she wasn't sure, so I whipped out my zach morris cell phone and called my mom. She is the one that told me, and my entire class what was going on, and by some miracle we found a computer in the room we were in that had dial up and worked. We all gathered around the computer and watched the 2nd plane hit, it was horrifying.

I remember going home early that day and wondering if this was it, and not wanting to leave my house, or stop watching tv. It was the first (and only) time in my life I saw fear in my dad's eyes.

I was in third period my junior year of HS.

I don't think I realized what a big deal it was at first. My dad was NYPD - he had off that day but went in when it happened. I can't believe its already been nine years.

I was going to refrain from answering this question. It brings up some seriously bad memories and since the attack seems to bring out some of the worst attributes of people as well. But also i remember how so many people were so nice to each other after. There was a kindness i hadnt seen between strangers since I was a kid.

I was driving to work when the 1st plane hit. After i realized it wasnt a cruel joke i finally got a hold of my father who was a block away and obvlious of what was happening. So began the terror of getting my dad home from nyc unharmed. And also began the list of people missing and later dead that i knew.

I think as nyers we feel this differently that people not from here. We're angry this happened to us in our backyard.

But i wont lie. Since that day, ive learned that people have the ability to open their hearts to a stranger and theyre also just as quick to accuse, lie and use someone else's pain to fulfill their own agenda and hatred. :(

Sometimes I feel like we go backwards every year. I suppose everyone grieves differently but I'd rather say a prayer, keep them in my thoughts and keep living. It's so hard to watch it over and over every year.

I was a junior in college at Binghamton. I woke up and was getting ready for class and I turned on the TV and I saw the beginning when only 1 tower was hit. At first I thought, not again - I didn't realize the severity of it. It was really sad - i went to class and then I heard more that was going on and they cancelled classes. I was all alone in my apartment that morning but I just remember when I went to campus, it was all that ppl could talk about and they had a blood drive that day for it. really sad

I was in college at the Fashion Institute in midtown. About 10 mins into class another professor came running in the room and told us we all needed to go home, but there was no way in or out of the city. So me and millions others ended up sitting on the curbs of the streets of the city for hours and hours, with nowhere to go and nothing to do. Finally later that night I was able to get on the first subway that opened up and got to queens, then my bro picked me up there.

I will never ever forget that day and how scared I was, and the fear I saw on everyone's faces around me. I still get the chills thinking about it. I can't imagine how it must feel to lose a loved one that day.

I was driving on my way to NCC listening to Howard Stern on KROCK. Howard Stern was screaming that a plane hit the tower, and he was watching the whole thing happen. He was freaking out on the radio and I was like, what is going on...
I get to my Bio class at Nassau and no one had any clue what happened, I told this guy who sat behind me that a plane had hit the WTC and they think it was on purpose. My professor then came in and told us we were under attack and told us all to go home immediately. It was so so scary. I remember coming home watching the TV all day saying this is like something out of a movie.
My grandparents were vacationing in my family condo in florida and they were supposed to come home that day, they didn't get back to NY until a week later.
My best friends dad was FDNY, I couldn't get a hold of her or her mother for 2 days. It was a total nightmare. Thank god my friends father was fine.
I will never forget that day.

My high school boyfriend had died in a tragic car accident on 9/11/00. I woke up, went to the cemetery to visit him, and then went to school. I was a sophomore in high school. I was dreading going to school that day because everyone knew that it was the one year anniversary of his death and I really didn't want all the attention from people at school.

I was walking in between second and third period when I saw my 300 pound health teacher (ironic, i know) running through the hallway. She had just heard about the first attack on the towers and was reacting because her husband worked in WTC Tower 7. He survived but there was a long period of time where she didn't know if he was OK. I lived very close to my high school so I walked to the front office to 'sign myself out' and my mother was already standing there ready to pick me and my sister up.

My dad worked downtown at the time at 222 broadway and we couldn't contact him for 8 hours after the attack because cell service and all the phones were down. We finally go a call from him later that day saying that a woman in his office had driven into the city that day and that he was in south jersey with her and several of his coworkers at her home. i will never forget that day for as long as I live. I even remember exactly what I was wearing because it was such a stressful day for me to begin with as I was still mourning the loss.

I was fortunate enough to not lose anyone close to me on 9/11/01, but each year is a constant reminder of 9/11/00 and 9/11/01.

ETA: For weeks afterward, we weren't allowed to open the windows at school because of all the debris blowing onto LI from the city.

A friend of mine had a dad that worked for Con-Ed and I was actually able to visit the site about 5 days after it happened. Those images will never leave my mind.

I was running late for school that day. I was attending Pace University a few blocks away. My dad was mad that I was going to make him late since we traveled together. As we were on the express bus heading to the city, I saw the first tower on fire. There were rumors on the bus about being a place accident and some said it was a fire. As we were stuck in traffic, everyone was talking about it and we saw the second tower get hit as we entered the battery tunnel! We were stuck in the tunnel and the bus driver told s we could walk to the city if we wanted do and so we did. We walked all the way through the tunnel. As we hit the Manhattan side, a woman ran into the tunnel and said to turn back and there was a bomb in the tunnel. We started running back, people were leaving their cars behind and running. I remember looking back to look for my dad, seeing a man rip his son out of the car with his car seat and everyone just running away. As we his the brooklyn side of the tunnel again, all we saw was soot and powder and were told the tower just collapsed. I felt shock, fear, disbelief...tears started coming down as we started to walk back to Brooklyn.

When we got home, i watched the news and heard it was terrorism. I knew of terrorism in Israel, but never faced it head on in NY!

Days and weeks later, we learned of people we knew who perished and it hit home :( 9 years later, we have survived but will never be the same....

RIP to all our men, women and children who perished for no good reason at all!!! You are gone, but never forgotten!

I was at my first year of college sitting in class and then they announced it. I was freaked out because my dad and my uncle used to work in those towers but transferred to the a diff building right near it. We couldn't get into contact with them for hours. My dad had to walk to manhatten to brooklyn to my aunts apt. My dad and my uncle saw ppl jumping right in front of them. My uncle became a police officer after that.

I was a freshman at Nassau community college. I had class early in the morning but didnt have class until later in the day s oi drove home. I had a CD on in the car and didn't hear about it until I came home and turned on the tv but when I turned on the TV they were showing old clips of when the WTC had been bombed years before and then they went to the pictures of that day.

My dad was in the city and I couldn't get in touch with my mom or my dad so I drove down to the school my mom works at and I was all upset. She told me my dad was fine that he wasn't near it that day but she told me I couldn't come in unless I calmed down because they didn't want the children to know. So I calmed down and stayed with my mom for the rest of the day since my classes had been cancelled.

Some family friends lost family members that day. It is a day I will never forget. My heart goes out to all the people who lost their lives and to the families that lost these people because even though its 9 years the wounds are still raw. I wil never ever forget and my prayers are with everyone that is fighting to protect us and keep us safe.

My heart goes out to you. I had met your high school boyfriend that had passed away. He was good friends with many of my friends. I had been at the hospital with a few of them either the day before or the day he passed. That day was terrible for all of us and more so after the events of 9/11. That day is a day I will never forget.
