we have a combination of joint and separate accounts.
we have a joint account for wedding related things that is linked to my personal bank accounts so i can keep tabs on that.
FH still uses an old school bank that doesn't allow him to transfer money to different banks (so annoying) so he has to write me a check for our joint bills each month. i keep trying to get him to switch to Bank of America so that we can link accounts, but he's so stubborn.
I take care of paying all of our joint bills (rent, electric, TV, etc) but we each pay our 'personal' bills each month from our own accounts (car, school loans, credit cards, etc.)
We talked about setting up a joint checking account that we'll both contribute 75% of our earnings to once we're married. the other 25% of our income will stay in our own separate accounts so that we can still have some financial freedom.
