QOTD - Your first job(s) ?

Original post by anna

I was reminiscing about my first couple of jobs yesterday and thought it would be cute to chat about on a Friday !

What was your first job ?
So how old were you ?
Did you like it ?
For fun - what was the pay ?
Do you think it started you on the road to anything?

I was 14. Supermarket cashier. $3.85 an hour !! Liked it at first. Was SOOO EXCITED to work.
But it got boring quickly, standing for 10 hour days on Saturdays ! Isnt that illegal ?? I lasted a few months till I got a job at a 'cool' clothing store for $3.35 an hour !!
Took a pay cut !! LOL.
But got discounts on clothes ! (Thats where the obsession began ! ) and my sis worked down the block at another clothing store ! We waited for eachother to get out of work to go home together.
In the back of the store were the buying offices, and constantly asked questions about who these ladies were and what they did, that it intrigued me that one could shop for a living and put together everything in a store ! (and it always remained in the back of my mind, till I went to F.I.T. for buying/merchandising !)

Anyone else have job stories to tell ??

My first job was at Mc Donald's when I was 15, it was fun, I met my first boyfriend there. I loved it I went back quite a few summers. I was promoted to trainer. I was cooking etc. The pay was minimun wage, but who cared, I was only doing it as a summer job. What I remember most is how quick I was and how all the men used to line up to wait on me so that they could look at my lips. Back then I used to wear really red lipsticks

I did the same thing as Julybaby-except I was waaaaaay young-I think I was only about 7 years old. I babysat the smaller kids with my 2 older sisters and got paid $5.00 an hour--which was pretty killer!
My first legal job-I was 13 and I worked in a chocolate store in Sayville and got paid $3.00 an hour. I really miss that job--all the free chocolate you could want!!

Aside from babysitting?
May first job was at Roosevelt Field...during my senior year of HS, I sold shoes at Bakers. I worked on commission. It was so much fun. And I met my first 'serious' bf. He was my manager! Shhh, don't tell!

Wow - I thought I was the only one - Paper Girl.

I started when I was about 10 or 11. I really liked it.

Pay wasn't much but I was the only one of my friends with my own money so it was great.

My parents helped out in the winter and rain - they would drive me but otherwise I delivered the papers on a scooter (not motorized or anything).

I also delivered the Daily News and got up really early in the morning to do it.

First job at age 17 was at a chocolate shop in the mall (think upscale mall, like nicer than Roosevelt Field even) in Houston called Neuhaus Chocolates. They were expensive Belgian chocolates and I ate a ton of them! I met one of my best friends on earth there.....

After that I went down two stores to a boutique called 'Koala Blue' that was owned by Olivia Newton-John. Instead of chocolates I had lots of clothes! We played all Australian pop music on the stereo and we had this giant TV that played all Olivia all the time (everything from Grease to her special on eco-awareness in Australia or some ****e) but what was creepy was that these creepo middle aged men would come to the mall and just lurk and stare at the TV for HOURS while never coming in. Once when the TV was broken, this one guy that came to watch all the time got really mad and demanded that we fix it immediately so he could watch Olivia! Scary for Olivia!

hmmmm....

I started my first job when I was a Sr. in HS... I worked behind the counter at Little Caesar's in Kmart....

Then I moved on up to Cashier at OfficeMax (no messy aprons there), then I was promoted to the District Admin... and now I'm here... Legal Secretary in Manhattan!

My first job was working in a neighborhood stationary/candy store. I was 16 and was making about $5 an hour off the books. I thought I was rich lol. I worked there on and off for about 5 years until I got my first 'real' city job. The best part was all of my friends got jobs working in the other stores in the strip mall. We use to have a blast.

And no I don't think my job helped me on any career path. It just got me addicted to candy lol.

My first job was teaching swimming to mentally retarded children. I was 15 years old. I was not eligible to get paid for it because the job was open to other teenagers that came from poor families. They turned me down because my family wasn't poor so my Mom contacted them and asked if I could still have the job if I didn't get paid because I really wanted to do it. They agreed after no one else would take the job.
It was a lot of work but very rewarding.

I was a babysitter after school for two kids for YEARS (I think $3 an hour)

I also started working at a temple at age 13 in the coat room (don't remember how much) then moved on to cocktail hostess, waitress then bartender. I worked there for about 12 years!!

I worked at the Chocolate Box in Roosevelt Field when I was 17. I loved being surrounded by chocolate! I used to steal some chocolates as I was stocking them (but only the cheap ones). I also met one of my good friends who I'm still good friends with 13 years later. She only worked there a day, but we ended up working together again a few years later. We always joke about how her chocolate career only lasted a day.

My first job other than babysitting was probably when I was 16 like a million years ago and I worked at Stallones (fast food) wiping tables & filling salt and pepper shakers.
I don't remember what the salary was.
