Quality... My center diamond is almost flawless, and sparkels and it is less a bit less than a carat---then there are side stones and 4 more stones....and even though I went in thinking I wanted a large center stone, I opted for the quality.

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
I say quality. Mine is nearly flawless, and looking at it next to others, you can really tell that they don't shine as much, or look a little 'off' in color. I have the certificate to go with mine, so I don't think I would have any problem upgrading later. I am a size 4 ring, though, so anything huge would definitely be overpowering on my hands.

I don't get this thread. Has anyone actually said, yeah- I want a big crappy quality ring?
Who really cares? I mean is this REALLY what getting married is about? What's all this obsession.
Sometimes I want to sell my ring- i love it- but really- it's useless to us...

Isn't it materialistic? Who cares what the ring is or the stone....you're getting married to be with your bestfriend!!! A ring is a ring is a ring...can always be replaced, upgraded, cleaned....but it's your spouse, your loved one who is most to cherish forever.

Personally, I think the most important factor is a great cut (and I don't mean shape). You can have a D/IF stone and if it's cut incorrectly, it will look like a dud...doesn't matter what size it is.
EXACTLY! the cut is really the important thing in how it sparkles... if its too shallow or too deep the light hits it the wrong way and it just wont sparkle the same way....definately very imporant.. and its not the easiest to tell.....

It's ALL a matter of personal tastes and finances. - I for one think the most tacky thing anyone can do is put their ring up against someone else's to compare. - I don't think BIG diamonds look 'stupid' or 'ridiculous' or are worn just to impress or show off - If you can afford your $50k Harry Winston, I say GO FOR IT ! - You can't take the money w/ you to the grave. -

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
I wanted Big & Gorgeous, My fiance gave me brilliant & elegant. I am so much more happy that he took the time to pick a practically flawless diamond. It means more that he wanted top quality for me, and took the time to find it. Regardless of the ring, I am thrilled to spend the rest of my life with him as his wife.

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
Interesting thread. We could go on forever about what's more important. Obviously, the man comes first BUT I do love my ring and look at it every day. It is neither the largest nor the best quality(but not bad quality either). It is a little of both quantity and quality. He put all the money he had into the stone though and we will probably upgrade the setting when the money is there to plat. with diamond sidestones. If it happens, great. If not, I'm not planning on leaving. There are many things to enjoy in life. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the things that you have be they material or not. What matters is the order of your priorities!

Everyne says the ring isn't important. Of course it's not the most important thing but most of us DO have rings and thre's npthing wrong with discussing it. It's not about materialism. Most of us ahve rings, it's a fact...some chose size over quality, some quality ovr size..preference..that's all we're discussing. I don't think it makes anyone materialistic.

I love my ring, it's not a huge rock, but it's a beautiful diamond & I wouldn't trade it since it's from my FI!!

FH and I went for small and high quality. I get a lot of stupid comments about rock size, but people are stupid, so what can ya do?
People are just clueless -- it is very rude to ask someone how big of a carat weight a ring is. And as someone pointed out, who cares!!!

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
My FI and I had been dating 6 years, so it wasn't really a surprise, and we went shopping for the ring together. I thought at first that I wanted a fairly large diamond (and to me a little under a carat was perfect). But then after looking at diamonds that size in our price range, I saw that I'd rather have a very white and clear diamond that was smaller. So my diamond is a lot smaller than most, but it is really striking, and I would never trade it in.
Regardless of size or quality, the sentiment is the same. But, since you'll be wearing it for the rest of your life, you should get one you love

Exactly. That's why FH insisted that I go with him to pick out the ring, because I've got to wear it forever. Also, I was surprised to get it so soon. We had discussed a price range and I knew what I wanted, and it fell into that price range, but I really didn't think I'd be getting it as soon as I did, but Fh is a good saver, and wanted me to have it.
