Would you girls rather have a huge rock but with discoloration and imperfections only a professional could tell by looking at it OR a small perfect, clear expensive diamond?

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
Most def, quality over quantity.. my ring is a simple solitare and just under a carat, and I LOVE IT, it simple and classy, but still has a WOW to it too, it was a wise investment on FH part..

I agree. DH researched diamonds for a long time and came up with my ering. I have gotten so many comments on how beautiful it is and because the quality is so high and setting so simple, it looks bigger than it really is.
But here's something interesting. They're now almost to the point where they can manufacture diamonds--not talking CZ's or anything, but REAL diamonds with NO flaws. So, in a few decades, those natural diamonds with small imperfections will be worth more than perfect stones which were created synthetically!

I went with smaller an more valuable. For some reason it was important to me. i like knowing how high quality the diamond is. I know people wiht huge rings and I feel like they're showing off.
I think that people just assume just because you have a BIG ring it is less quality and that people with BIG rings are showing it off. That is like saying people with LITTLE rings dont show them off because they are EMBARASSED. I think you will always have people who are Like LOOK AT me and then there are others who are wearing a big ring and dont even mention it.
I dont think everyone witha big ring is showig off. But I think once you get inot 3 and 4 carat rings it's just so big it looks ridiculous on most people. I couldn't go any bigger than the one I have, because I have small hands. I tried on a bigger one and it just looked So stupid! And just because it's big doens't mean it's loq quality at all. The people I know wiht huge ones also have high quality. but the question was based on like, for example, if you had $5000, would you get the 1 carat, really high quality, or the 2 carat, not so great quality?

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
If you get a 'big' diamond but it looks dirty what's the point ??????
If the quality isn't good, that's how it looks. I love that mine sparkles and looks so clear. I get so many compliments on how much it sparkles. I've seen larger ones that just don't have the same shine so I know the quality isn't half as good

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
I agree with the person who said it depends on the girl... I have a good friend who has a HUGE ering... over 3 carats... BUT, she's also a big girl! Not fat, but very tall and very muscular... looks like an exact match to Gabrielle Reese... so it looks great on her hand! I tried on the ring and it looked ridiculous! I have abnormally small hands... really... abnormally, almost self-consciously small hands... anything too big looks weird, especially considering I don't wear any jewelry at all... I think it really all depends on your style and your size!

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
You girls and guys have to read this. I love this site How Stuff Works and I found and article How Diamonds Work
...carbon, the element that makes up 18 percent of the weight of your body. In many countries, including the United States and Japan, there is no other gemstone as cherished as the diamond, but in truth, diamonds are no more rare than many other precious gems. They continue to demand higher market prices because the majority of the diamond market is controlled by a single entity. ...
...The only reason why we pay so much more for diamonds today than for other precious gems is because the diamond market is controlled almost entirely by a single diamond cartel, called De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., which is based in South Africa. ...
...At times, just to keep prices up, De Beers has bought tremendous numbers of diamonds from countries attempting to inject large quantities into the market. If De Beers were a U.S.-based company, it would be in violation of antitrust laws for fixing the prices of diamonds. ...
...hehe...The secret to De Beers' success is a marketing campaign that convinces women that they should receive a diamond ring from their fiancee and convinces young men to pay 'two-months salary' for that ring to show how much their love is worth.

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
You know..I never through of it that way...but it IS the COMPANY giving us that guideline. And we go for it. It's like walking intoa car dealership and having them say 'you know everone spends a year's salray on a car..it's the guideline' or going into forunoff 'Generally, I'd say you spend 3 months salary on a couch' We wouldn't buy it! But for diamonds we do! We're suckers! Of course FH is a college student so what he spent was more like 2 years salary..LOL 2months salary and I'd be walkng around with someone out of cracker jacks

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
Personally I almost almost wish FI hadn’t spent so much on my e-ring. We are saving so much to buy a house and pay for the wedding. If I sold it and downgraded we would have a chunk of $ to pay for everything else.

Yeah..it's SO much money. it's like the wedding..afterward you almost wish u hadn't sent that nuch and you could afford the downpayment or the furniture or whatever. I love my ring though. My mom alwyas told me you only get one and it's forever. So I really wanted it to be nice, and FH wanted it to be something really nice too! I just think it's perfect and Ill never feel like it's too small or too low quality, you know? I always think it's perfect! YAY!

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
I just got engaged 3 weeks ago, so FH was shopping for the ring very recently. He was telling me that jewlers were telling him that the latest 'trend' they were noticing is men coming in and asking for the biggest thing they could get for their money, regardless of quality. A few were shocked when FH said he'd rather have a better stone for his $$$. I guess when you have celebrities and reality stars walking around with rings the size of the Hope Diamond, its bound to leak into public conciousness that bigger is better! :) I love my ring cause FH put alot of work into it, choosing the diamond and designing the setting just for me...and he did a perfect job! I certainly can't judge anyone else on what they have or why they like it, though. I think, whatever floats your boat works for me. :)
I am amazed though at how people react to e-rings, overall. I never really thought about it until I had my own. But boy, the range of responses is unreal. Anyone else find that some people are just as nice as can be, and then some, even some of the most unexpected people, are just plain rude???

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
Well, I had this problem too. Ultimately we went with a nearly flawless 1 carat with two baguettes of .3 carats on the side. We knew we'd want to upgrade the ring later and it is easier to get a jeweler to buy back a top quality ring than one with flaws or slightly yellow. I ended up getting a D color with VVS1 and a great cut. I know we won't have trouble trading it in later.
Go to the Diamond District. It is the cheapest place in the world (except for Antwerp maybe) to get diamonds. My Fh is from South Africa and I used to live there. The diamonds are all mined there but cost so much more than they do here in NYC!!

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
Definitly Quality
A good friend of mine has a bigger ring then me.. 2 1/2 cts. and she paid less then mine! I was like wow I thought my FH got a good deal but her fh takes the cake! mine is only a almost 2 ct total including the side stones. but when you put our rings next to eachother the difference was amazing. Hers does not sparkle at all no matter what kind of lighting and it looks REALLY yellow next to other diamonds. apparently her fh wanted more quantity then quality.
I also agree with the size of the girl thing. FH's cousin just got engaged and he gave his FI a really big rock. she is soooooo tiny maybe a size 0 on a fat day lol and small skinny hands and everyone thinks it looks so gaudy ( I love it lol) but on another girl they wouldnt say anything like that.

I got E Color VVS1. That's exactly what I wanted. I'm really happy with it. Online I saw a D color IF!! I was like OMG! but it realy was SOO much money. I love mine. I prefer the sparkle anyday! And my hands are small so everyone thinks mine is bigger than it is!

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
I definately agree quality is the most important...my fiance did an excellent job picking mine out without any hints from me...boy was i impressed... him being a man researched the diamond to death and he went with both quality and quantity...asscher cut ...ladies next time you ask your man for diamonds i recommend the asscher cut its is absolutely gorgeous. Here is a pic of my ring
It's just a matter of preference where you choose to put your money: in carat weight or clarity/color. (or all the above)
A larger diamond with 'not so great stats' doesn't have less of a value b/c it's not 'high quality'. It's value is in the carat weight.
Example, two stones of different sizes. One with higher color and clarity, the other with a greater carat weight:
Stone 1 1.30 D IF 60.9% 57% GIA 7.05x7.08x4.3 $20784
Stone 2 3.01 I SI1 61.1% 55% GIA 9.28-9.32-5.68 $20709
They both have similar values. (of course there are other characteristics that come into play that effect the cost, such as girdle, cut, polish, flouresence, etc.)
Personally, I think the most important factor is a great cut (and I don't mean shape). You can have a D/IF stone and if it's cut incorrectly, it will look like a dud...doesn't matter what size it is.

Re: Quantity Or Quality in a diamond ring?
First off, FH could've given me something from a Cracker Jack box and I would've loved it. What the ring symbolizes is whats important.
FH went with quality rather than quantity. My center stone is about .75 carat, nearly perfect. The side stones are .25 each. I absolutely love this ring!! when FH proposed, he actually said, 'I spent the money on the quality of the diamond, not on the size.' Honestly any bigger would look ridiculous on my hand and I would feel funny with something larger since I'm kind of simple.
Here's what makes me nuts (and I just have to vent because I still can't believe this): A friend of FH got engaged and his girlfriend demanded that the ring be at least 2 carats or she would say no! ***??? Her ring was probably not much more in price than mine, and IMO it looks like a mens ring or something ( not that men wear large diamonds, but its just what I think of). When she saw my simple and classy ring she says, 'Oh its adorable!' She said it as if I was a preschooler dressing up in Mommy's jewelry or something. My come back was 'I wouldn't want anything more or less. FH wants me to be his wife and that is what makes me the happiest person in the world!!'
Quality over quantity... definitely!

I also went for smaller and more perfect And I would never trade it in to 'upgrade' because you can't 'upgrade' where you were in life when you got engaged. JMO. Now, on the other hand, I am not opposed to an ADDITIONAL ring
