I always have my mace in hand if I'm walking alone at night (which is rare, I always try to use the buddy system)

in your hand is fine but when you talk on the phone you are not aware and looking all around. Seriously just watch for people. Always think of a way out of a situation. Think of the worst that could happen and plan a way in which you could react quickly and effectively

are you serious! I'm out there all the time for field work and FH & I are out there all the time b/c we like the restaurants....no where is safe ladies...keep your eyes open!

you think thats bad, my fh lives on 42nd

omg sweetie, be careful! Try to avoid at night if you can or bring pepper spray (i'm usually law abiding but ***!!) I HATE commercial areas like that (if it's the area i'm thinking about) b/c of this exact reason. They are so empty late afternoon/evening that it makes me soooo nervous!!

I always carry my keys in my hand with one key sticking out incase I need to stab someone, or something...lol....STAB AND TWIST! that is what I was taught when I had my externship with the Federal Probation Department...the wound will bleed more and hurt like a biotch!

Oh wow I always do that too

haha...thought I was the only one..guess it's that city girl training. I also always put my cell to my ear regardless if i'm talking or not. For some reason I feel that they will leave me alone if they think I can easily call for help.

Actually FH tells me never to talk on the phone if you are nervous in an area.

wooow..really, I had no idea that was a bad idea. I'm out late in the field too much not to heed this advice...thanks really

Thanks for the heads up. I'm in queens, not in Astoria but these things happen all over. You always have to look around when you get into your car or even walk to the train, etc.

YOu always watch your surrondings. thanks for that.

I always am careful...It just S*cks because i grew up in astoria and honestly you always felt safe. I lived right by ditmars boulevard and there were always lots of people around no matter what time it was. But just in general you didn't really have to worry so thats why it makes me sad

You're right. You're supposed to feel safe in your neighbourhood and not worry about anything but when you see things like this happening it makes you think twice.

This lady was one of the brave ones. Theere are hundreds of rapes that go on every day that are unreported because the women are scared and embrassed. There are crazy people out there and you never know what could happen.

Girls - always pay attention to your surroundings- no matter how safe you think it is and how bright it is outside.

oh yeah definitely, i got mugged at 7pm on a crowded train...I chased the guy down to get my chain back which was stupid when i thought about it after but i just reacted without thinking.

OMG! thank god you were ok!

Yeh wow that is crazy. IT's funny when things like that happen the first instincts that kick in is the chase the ******* down and get that chain back but it's not always the safest one. you dont know what the guys has on him or what he could do. just leave it alone. there are thousands of chains out there. you only have one life.

Re: Queens girls be careful!!!

Another BIG tip ladies that I saw an expert on oprah say and it really does make sense is don't stop and talk to anyone even if they are trying to help you.

They look for people they think are more submissive..They gave an example that lets say youre carrying groceries and a guy offers to carry it for you just look right at him and say NO...And even if you say no dont start apologizing, they look for weaknesses, they look for people who stop and say oh its ok but thank you so much. Just say NO and nothing else, they try again and say NO again and be firm

Point is just be a B*tch. You're out alone at night dont stop to help a guy out with directions, don't let them help you with anything either...Also show confidence, don't look scared if you see a guy walk by you and you're alone, stand up straight and look right at them if anything...I give everyone dirty looks when they walk by me. They don't want to deal with the loud mouth women that will go right off

yeah that show was very informative and its so true. If they see you're scared from the beginning or you act submissive like all quiet oh no its ok i got it...They say that once you start explaining and say anything more than just NO! thats when they know they have their victim
