i dont its so weird to me that you are getting off so far from the mall, i mean i live right by queens blvd and ill take it locally to the mall and that alone takes me 20-30 mins bc of the lights and traffic, and 188th thats even a completely different neighborhood and union too and theyre all further from me and even further from the mall. You can still take the LIE if you say the service road is faster but get off at a different exit, youre getting off way too early...infact theres a queens blvd exit on the LIE that leaves you 2 blocks away from the mall
yeah but i think she's saying that between 188 and the QB exit she is getting killed with traffic - that's why she wants to get off so early. she's trying to figure out if the local roads would be less traffic than what is on the LIE in queens. i think it will be less traffic, but i agree with you, the lights might make it the same amount of time, if not longer.
yes we can literally get stuck after college pt blvd where it merges from more than 10 min.. it makes me nuts and a lot of times traffic is bad from kissena till after the merge. thought maybe the side streets would be better even with lights
In my experience, there are just some mornings where the side streets are quicker. I've been commuting into Queens by car for the past 3 years and I completely feel your pain.
On a regular basis, I try to take the LIE all the way to my exit so I'm getting off as close as I can to school. But there are some mornings where sitting there involves being at a stand still for 15, 20, 25 minutes. Not only is that making me late, but it's also making me insane. In those cases I get off at 32 and do the other route I told you about because then at least I'm moving.
I think it's kinda something you have to feel out.

I'm trying to see if there is a better way for me to get to work, i work near queens center mall.
Right now coming from massapequa pk i take the LIE to the service rd (at springfield blvd) take that to college pt blvd then have to deal with that BS where grand central and LIE merge, then get right off by lefrak city then to queens blvd) I hit a lot of traffic from kissena to after the merge.
Im trying to see if it would save me time if i took the service rd to 188th street to union trpk to queens blvd.
do you think I will hit less traffic or it will be quicker to take 188th to union to Queens Blvd?
you probably hit alot of traffic on the lie right? why dont you take the northern state and just stay on that, it turns into grand central and get off at queens blvd
188th street or union are so far from the mall
well I car pool, so if we take the LIE from 135 we can get in the service rd and its quicker. My friend used to take northern state to grand central and said she always used to be late
I know that when i leave work and take queens blvd to union to cross island its not so bad. thought maybe from horace harding, to 188 to union the traffic might move better
its just so annoying because wed and fri it took us 2hours to get to work instead of the normal hour or so
I car pool too. What we do is take the LIE to the end of the HOV lane then depending on traffic either get on the grand central or we stick it out to the qeuuens blvd exit.
Smetimes I take the LIE or grand central to the Van Wick to queens blvd. that seems to go quick too.
ok so after HOV ends how much further is it to grand central?
so you will stay on the LIE (not get off on service rd) and take that to queens blvd? the LIE always seems so crowded and slow.
I really appreciate this!!
ok so after HOV ends how much further is it to grand central?
I want to say 4 or 5 exits from LIE to Grand Central. We get off the LIE at the Clearview and take that to the Grand Central and then get off at queens blvd.
so you will stay on the LIE (not get off on service rd) and take that to queens blvd? the LIE always seems so crowded and slow.
I try not to go that way because it crawls by Lefrak City and I get annoyed sitting in it!

even with no traffic, from 188th to queens mall locally its about 20 mins at least, its longer trust me, i was an idiot and i used to do it locally bc i thought it was faster and it really isn't. This way you are better off getting off at the queens blvd exit on the grand central bc although you'll hit lights its alot closer than 188th
thanks that is why i wanted to ask because i couldnt really visualize the distance and didnt want to just try it and get stuck

You can also look at traffic.com before you leave and even in the car if any of you have a blackberry. I usually do that before I leave and it sometimes helps.

imagine how i feel, i live in queens my whole life and have to deal with that traffic, whenever i take the LIE i have to deal with the merge by main street, then i always have shea stadium traffic, and basically all the areas you all are talking about is what i have to do no matter what all the time, even on weekends lol.
Gina-give me a few mins let me think of a good way, unfortunately the LIE stinks, i try to avoid it as much as possible...i go to massapequa alot and coming home we either take the southern state to the van wyck which btw leads to the grand central and also splits up to the whitestone and queens blvd exit...or i take the wantaugh to the end which turns into grand central, there might be less traffic on that

Yeah we usually take the 135 (when car pooling) to LIE because we can get the HOV lane
if alone i take wantagh to northern state to lie (the norther state has been a mess lately - hence the fact i was late 2 days last week)

Re: QUEENS PEOPLE.. commuting question.
OR you can take the grand central and from there theres a midtown tunnel/lie exit and you take that and as soon as you get on you'll see the queens blvd exit.
i would just see which has less traffic in the morning...there are times when im driving home from LI and what i do is once i see signs that theres traffic at exits ahead i take another route, or for example on the northern state right where it splits to either stay on or cross island parkway, if i see traffic on the northern i ll get off and take the cross island. if theres traffic on the southern or lie i take the wantaugh. Dont forget that the BQE is also right by queens mall

I used to take the SS to VW (and sometimes i still do) take the Southern State to the Van Wyck to either queens blvd or the grand central. The only thing with that is that the van wyck is bumper to bumper until right after the jamaica train station but it does move. I have found that the service road goes quick.

if you take the LIE to the grand central just keep in mind that the queens blvd exit is by 87th avenue, when you get off the only thing you can do is make a right, just stay straight on that and it will lead you to the mall, its about 20 avenues away but still better than getting off even further away

Re: QUEENS PEOPLE.. commuting question.
Back to your original question. My friend has been late 3 times in the last week or so. She used to get off at 188 and take it to Union, which she flew on. But lately, GCP is mess so she now gets off at Hillside Ave and is now beating me to work.
Also, I do SS to Belt to VW. You can fly on this by staying on VW service road or doing what I do and getting on the main highway but staying in the on/off lane. In other words I get on and get right back off. You can avoid almost all of the lights this way.

You can avoid almost all of the lights this way.
which hillside avenue exit? theres 2 of them, theres one on the gcp that leaves you off at like 200something street, and then theres the hillside/jamaica ave exit which is exit 6 off the van wyck, that one is good bc it will leave you on 130something street, and theres several things you can do from there, one is to make a right on hillside avenue and then next light you make a left on queens blvd and take that straight which will leave you right by the gcp queens blvd exit, depending how far you have to go its not that bad. The van wyck many times you get lucky going in that direction bc that early you wont always hit traffic but like you said theres the service road.

my dad was saying the SS but coming from Massapequa (exit 31) i feel there might be too much traffic. where are you getting on the SS and what time?
I get on at 33 in Lindenhurst and leave about 615-620. I hit a bit of traffic around exit 21 but its not bad and clers up after about 2 exits.
