QUEENS PEOPLE.. commuting question.

Original post by jgl

I'm trying to see if there is a better way for me to get to work, i work near queens center mall.

Right now coming from massapequa pk i take the LIE to the service rd (at springfield blvd) take that to college pt blvd then have to deal with that BS where grand central and LIE merge, then get right off by lefrak city then to queens blvd) I hit a lot of traffic from kissena to after the merge.

Im trying to see if it would save me time if i took the service rd to 188th street to union trpk to queens blvd.

do you think I will hit less traffic or it will be quicker to take 188th to union to Queens Blvd?

Back to your original question. My friend has been late 3 times in the last week or so. She used to get off at 188 and take it to Union, which she flew on. But lately, GCP is mess so she now gets off at Hillside Ave and is now beating me to work.

Also, I do SS to Belt to VW. You can fly on this by staying on VW service road or doing what I do and getting on the main highway but staying in the on/off lane. In other words I get on and get right back off. You can avoid almost all of the lights this way.

my dad was saying the SS but coming from Massapequa (exit 31) i feel there might be too much traffic. where are you getting on the SS and what time?

I get on at 33 in Lindenhurst and leave about 615-620

do you take the SS to the belt?

it might not be that bad, i live off the van wyck, i always refer to grand central bc i used to live in astoria and so used to it...but yeah when i drive out to LI depending which part i have to take the van wyck to the belt that turns into the southern state, you would do the opposite obviously lol. With the van wyck you can get lucky going the direction you're going, ALSO if you stay on the van wyck past the hillside/jamaica avenue exit it will split and you can take the queens blvd exit, or it leads you right to the grand central(stay on your left)

On normal traffic days i will leave about 615 620 get on the LIE service rd by 705 (at springfield) and get to work about 730ish/745

wouldnt taking the SS to belt be longer? the SS is always such a mess. haha

check traffic.com before you leave and see which highway has the least amount of traffic, that is your best bet...like i told you i take many ways, it all depends on what the traffic is like, depending on time of day you might be going against the traffic. After you look at the traffic report you can decide which would be easiest...the best for you is to take it to the queens blvd exit on the liebc it is the closest to the mall but the LIE can be a mess, how far from the mall do you work? the queens blvd exit on the gcp isnt that bad, just stay in the middle lanes not the side single lanes and it moves faster...there is a tunnel that cuts through part of queens blvd but im afraid if i tell you that it will confuse you. If the wantaugh is fine in the mornings then take that and you can stay on it until it ends and turns to northern and take it to the LIE/midtown tunnel exit and leads you to the queens blvd exit...again all depends on traffic that day, sometimes i have no problems and sometimes its a disaster

I leave at 5:45 and get on at exit 36(West Babylon). If I leave closer to 6 (I think Danielle said it) you will hit traffic around exit 20 but it's gone within 2 exits.

The Hillside Ave my friend gets off on is the one right on the Queens/Nassau border by the Cross Island.

Re: QUEENS PEOPLE.. commuting question.

i live right on the Forest Hills/Rego Park border and come home from wantagh all the time. FH sometimes takes the SS to the belt from baldwin and I never get it (i'm used to the cross island to the grand central) but it can be quicker - BUT we don't do it in a.m. rush hour (we do it in sunday night traffic lol). Anyway, when i used to commute to school in queens from LI i always played the traffic game - if the LIE was too crowded i'd jump on the service road and if that was bad i'd go to the grand central. traffic ***** but its everywhere.

another option - which is what I do now since I don't have a car anymore: if you really are sick of driving, there is always the LIRR to forest hills. the babylon line (lindenhurst, massapequa, wantagh, etc.) stops at forest hills if you catch the local train or you could switch at jamaica for a train that stops at forest hills. then you can hop on the subway right there to woodhaven blvd which is the mall exit. It's just an option - I will be the first to admit that i'd rather drive, but the traffic might drive me insane.

where does your friend have to go though, this matters alot bc maybe the hillside avenue exit off the gcp might be close to where your friend has to go, otherwise its a long drive locally to queens mall, over 100 blocks and quite a few aves also...the hillside/jamaica ave exit on the van wyck is alot closer to the mall, she can get off and take queens blvd locally, if theres no traffic at that time she can actually make it there pretty quick, can be a 10-15 min drive with no traffic

She actually has to go right by the Hillside/Jamaica exit you're talking about. We work at Richmond Hill HS which is 114th St and 89th Ave.

union tpke has a lot of traffic too, I know a little trick route to queens blvd(I work on queens blvd) It's kind of detailed so if you're interested let me know and I'll type it out for you but if you already found a better way there's no point

Yeah, last year we took a student to Red Lobster (why do they all pick that place as their favorite restaurant) and it took us over half an hour to get there from RHHS and then I had to go to St John's for a final after and that took almost an hour. I forgot what an absolute nightmare that traffic was.

well from where you are, you can get to kew gardens road and you take that down right before it ends and turns into queens blvd but you make a left then a right and theres a tunnel that takes you straight to austin street, it cuts on time a little bc you dont deal with queens blvd traffic for a bit. And yeah ive taken it locally from my house to around where st johns is and it can take a while, sometimes its better to jump on the highway
