Question about applying to Hofstra Grad. school....can anyone help?

DH is applying to the MA in Sec. Ed. Math program and the paper version of the application doesn't have an area for an essay. The online version (that we're filling out) has optional room for a resume or essay. Do you think he has to write an essay?

You should ALWAYS write an essay/personal statement for grad school! ALWAYS. it's sometimes a bigger aspect of the app than GPA and GRE scores. (That's what I've been told repeatedly --I work for kaplan)

I do admissions for graduate Math at NYU. He should write the essay, or 'personal statement'. Motivation and quantitative abilities and desire to be an educator w/out sounding too over the top shoud do the trick.

This is really none of my business and you can tell me so, but why Hofstra? Why not Queens or Hunter?

he'll be going to school at night after work and he works right near there...plus, his BA is from Hofstra and my BA and MA are from there...I guess we're just Hofstra people! he's been speaking with the chairperson for a little while now about applying to the program.

Re: Question about applying to Hofstra Grad. school....can anyone help?

I have a Master's in Ed from Hofstra. Granted, I finished in '96. But I found that their admission standards are fairly flexible. I didn't have to write an essay or take the GRE.

That said, if there is space for an essay on the online application, I'd definitely do it. I'm sure he has nothing to worry about.

Re: Question about applying to Hofstra Grad. school....can anyone help?

I was looking to apply to Hofstras grad program over the summer & had the same concern when I attenpted to do the application online. He definetly has to write an essay, but for some reason, tehir online application system is terrible. Definetly pass by the school one night & pick up an application, it is much more comprehendable. Also, don't bother calling them & asking them to mail you 1, I tried twice and waited and nothing ever came! Goodluck.
