I have always had dogs so I am unfamiliar with cats and their behavior. I am trying to teach our cat not to jump on the counter.I put sticky tape (not too sticky so it won't hurt him) there when I wasn't around in case he went up there. It worked. When we got home, the tape was on the floor crumbled up so obviously it was stuck on his paws & he had to get it off. My question is if I keep putting the tape there, will he learn not to go there?

Re: Question about cats.
Most likely--cats do things out of habits...so I think your cat would learn the hard way! Good luck with your kitty!!

you can also use tin foil...apparently they don't like it. But yes, they should learn after a few times.

Thanks Leelee. I was hoping that he will learn. I didn't know what else to do to keep him off the counter when I am not around.

Re: Question about cats.
heehee...this reminds me of this electric mat my parents once bought to deter their cats from peeing on the stove (they were REALLY bad!!). Everytime they jumped on the mat, it would give them a little shock--I hated this thing and thought it was awful. My cats found a way to pee on the mat without getting shocked and they destroyed it! Cats are completely trainable..you should have no problems!

Thanks Leelee. I only wish I could have taped it. It would have been hysterical to see him jump up and get stuck on the tape and then flip out trying to get it off.

That's pretty funny...he must have wigged out!! I'd love to see that too! You could submit it to Animals funniest videos!!

Re: Question about cats.
Let me know if you find a way- my cat is always on the counters- it's just annoying.. we adopted him out of North Shore when he was 2 and he has a TON of crap habits. But he was abused so we let him get away with it because we feel bad for him,

Re: Question about cats.
When you are home try a water bottle! That is how we trained Xena and she rarely if ever goes on the counters. The tin foil thing is true, I know if they are gnawing. Our little Xena has a wood fetish and we had to wrap tin foil on the wood-- one bite of that was enough for her!

The cat doesn't do it when we are home.We have a water gun but he actually doesn't mind it. He seems to like water which is odd.

Re: Question about cats.
I have 3 cats & have tried lots of different things to train them to stay off of certain things, & it has never really worked for a long time. They all are inside cats & FH & myself are not home enough to really train them well, I guess. Don't get me wrong, they are very smart & have learned lots of stuff, but overall our cats do what they want. When we are home they don't(or FH gives them time out in the bathroom, believe it or not), but I know when we are out of the house they do as they please!

Re: Question about cats.
I have 4 cats and have all my life - there is a spray you should be able to get at petco or similar store that is not harmful to you or the cat - spray it on the counter and it will keep her/him off... they do not like the smell.. it's your best bet. She's probably playing with the sticky tape if she's antything like mine

Re: Question about cats.
THere is GOT to be something you can do to train them.. have you gone to NSAL website? they have a spot where you can email the training department questions..

Re: Question about cats.
oK, I didn't want to say it but here it goes: The area the cat keeps wanting to jump on is the stove. I can't spray on the stove so I need another idea.

Re: Question about cats.
What about just keeping them out of the kitchen?

Re: Question about cats.
There is no door to the kitchen and if I put something there, they will just jump over it.

Re: Question about cats.
Keep trying the tape...cats don't like the feel of sticky on their feet. THey even sell swatches of double sided tape to deter cats from clawing furniture.
