question about dogs?? help

Hey ladies,
So I have never had a dog and always kind of disliked them because I am sooo afraid of them. I'm scared of every dog.

I recently move and have a liiittle yard so I have decided to get rid of my fear and get a puppy (I can't do an adult dog because I am to afraid) my question is where do I get a puppy? Can puppies be adopted? Or purchased.

Also I want a dog that doesn't grow much, not as small as a teacup though) I've seen 2 types that are sooo cute; the teddy bear pomeranian and shih tzu.

I need some guidance

Hey there! I'm a 2010 bride crashing but first off, that's great that you're interested in getting a dog! There are a number of shelters like North Shore or Brooklyn's ACC or Bobbie and the Strays in Queens that you can adopt from however it is hard to find puppies of small breeds there. It's not impossible though, so that's where I'd start my search if I were you. Otherwise, look into different dog breeds and think about what kind of dog you'd like- low energy, hypoallergenic, etc.? From there you'll be able to find tons of different breed rescues and be able to adopt a dog who really needs a home. There are always breeders who you can purchase from but I just feel like there are so many dogs who need homes, why not adopt if possible? Anyway, good luck! And I'll keep an eye out!

i highly rec adopting- so many dogs out there that don't have homes!

I got all my dogs (except 1) from North Shore Animal League

They have a separate room for puppies, they don't get them often

You will be giving a dog a home that is stuck in a shelter!

if youre dead set on buying one, make sure you research the breed! and go to a reputable place

We got my chihuaha from a place out east by the wineries and our friends purchased their dog there as well and we have had no problems with them There is also a place in smithtown called Pick of the Litter- my FH bought a min pin from there a few years ago and also had no problems, the man who owns it lives on top of the store he is truly dedicated to his dogs and seems trustworthy.

buttt....ADOPT! its so worth it!

I def don't mind adopting, my only concern was finding a puppy that doesn't grow in size. I'm just to afraid of big dogs and for my first pet I wouldn't be able to deal with a large dog plus I live in an apt and feel bad to keep a big dog in an apt

if u don't have much space, def get a small dog, do lot of research on the internet for shelters, and if u find out they have puppies, get them soon 'cause puppies in shelters go very quickly

I think it's $75 at North Shore though it's a 'donation'.

Also, check out petfinder.com!

We adopted our puppy from North Shore Animal League in September. He was rescued from a mill in Virginia. When we adopted him, he had kennel cough and a parasite. We felt so bad because he was so sick. Once he completed his meds, he started to be cuddly and so lovable. It was the best decision we ever made.

There is a seperate room for puppies. We went to North Shore four times looking for puppies before we found our dog. They said the best time to come to look for puppies is early Thursday or Friday morning. You need to be there when they first open the doors. That's when you will be able to find one. The last time we were there, they had about 20 puppies ready to be adopted. The only thing was that they weren't really small breeds. I always wanted a small breed dog; however, once we saw our dogs face, I fell in love!! The first picture is the day we took him home. The second picture was from Halloween when we dressed him as a vampire. The last picture was taken yesterday after he was pooped after playing in the snow all day.

north shore always has puppies bc they import them. I;m not saying they're a bad rescue. they're the Nazis of dog adoption, checking refs etc which is awesome, but they do ignore our own death row dogs here in ny. I;m sorta mad at them right now.

what i'd do is go on petfinder.com. put in your zip, select dog and select puppy. then see whats available and then look the breeds up. That way you can see what size the dog will be.

honestly, i've been rescuing and fostering forever and I'll tell you that puppies are cute but they are WORK, plus you have no idea what the pup will grow up into. If you rescue a fully grown dog, you can see their personality NOW. A rescue will know all about that dog and you can go home w a dog that's housetrained, crate trained etc.

If you're afraid of dogs, I suggest getting a cavalier king charles spaniel. They are known to have great temperament and are also great with kids.

This is the dog FH and I want when we get our own place.

2012er crashing.... Definitely adopt. No matter what the pet store looks like (I know it is cute when the dogs are in play pens) the dogs are from a puppy mill. No reputable breader will give their dogs to a pet store. Puppy mills do a lot of interfamily breeding which is never good.

I would recommend before you go and get a dog make sure you are not still afraid. A dog is a 15 year committment. I would recommend to go and spend time with dogs, whether it is at a friend's house, a shelter or going to a dog park and make sure you are ok with a dog.

I agree with Amy about adopting an adult dog. Little dogs tend to be nippy (Napolean complex!) but you would not necessarily know that when the dog is a puppy. An adult dog you know the personality!

Just my 2 cents. But I have been doing rescue for many years.

I'd adopt but it may be tough to get a dog that doesn't really grow that way.

Rescued my dog in October. She is about 6-7 months old now. She had three parasites and an ear infection but now she is a healthy puppy:)

I will say she is a TON of work. She lives with my and my parents right now but when she comes with me to FH's house for the weekend he is exhausted.
