Hey ladies, So I have never had a dog and always kind of disliked them because I am sooo afraid of them. I'm scared of every dog.
I recently move and have a liiittle yard so I have decided to get rid of my fear and get a puppy (I can't do an adult dog because I am to afraid) my question is where do I get a puppy? Can puppies be adopted? Or purchased.
Also I want a dog that doesn't grow much, not as small as a teacup though) I've seen 2 types that are sooo cute; the teddy bear pomeranian and shih tzu.
I need some guidance

They have small breed dogs/puppies in shelters. You just have to be a little more patient. Petfinder.com is a great way to find smaller dogs in shelters.

Definately adopt. I rescued my dog from 'death row' as I like to call it. They were going to put her down because she was 'there too long!' Too long to them was 1 week.
I also agree with the ladies who suggested adopting an small breed adult dog. The temperment & personality is already there. Don't have to concern yourself too much with housebreaking, and you'll be saving a dog who may not be adopted because they are an adult already.
Good luck looking! I was terrified of dogs as well my whole life and the only way I broke it was by adopting my dog...a Pit Bull!!! Best decision I ever made (well, that and saying Yes to FH )

I would definitely go to North Shore Animal League. That's where I got my Maggie almost 2 years ago, she was only 2 months old. They have hundreds of rescued puppies. They have pure breds, designer breeds, and mutts (my fave).
My Maggie is the best dog I've ever had!
It's about $375donation to adopt a dog, but the donation goes to a very good and much needed cause. When you get your dog spayed or neutered they refund the $75 back to you.
north shore always has puppies bc they import them. I;m not saying they're a bad rescue. they're the Nazis of dog adoption, checking refs etc which is awesome, but they do ignore our own death row dogs here in ny. I;m sorta mad at them right now.
what i'd do is go on petfinder.com. put in your zip, select dog and select puppy. then see whats available and then look the breeds up. That way you can see what size the dog will be.
honestly, i've been rescuing and fostering forever and I'll tell you that puppies are cute but they are WORK, plus you have no idea what the pup will grow up into. If you rescue a fully grown dog, you can see their personality NOW. A rescue will know all about that dog and you can go home w a dog that's housetrained, crate trained etc.
True :( There are also plenty of young dogs at the local pounds. You will still get an energetic healthy pup, but you have the advantage of knowing the dog already full grown.

Def consider adopting! Little Shelter in Huntington is another place you can go! That's where my mom got our little Frankie...he is the best dog ever.
My FH's family adopted from North Shore and they were very happy also...and so did one of my MOH. Both dogs are amazing!

If you have never had a dog before I recommend an older dog. Puppies are a lot of work. North Shore has a number of small breed dogs (puppy mill rescues) that are between 2 and 5 years old. Also, with an adult dog you know how big they are, where as with a puppy you can't be sure how much they will grow. I volunteer there and that is where I got my little Pomeranian. She is a total love!
Amy is right, they do get a number of their dogs from out of state but they also get many of them from the shelters here. They have agreements with the ACC and the Mayor's Alliance. Many of the dogs I see there come from the ACC in Brooklyn. Good Luck and if you come to North Shore on a Sunday morning look for me! I am usually in the 'cat room'.

Im not a huge dog fan either only because I had a bad experience with a dachshund a few years ago...im a big cat person. BUT my parents got a pug last year and I have to say they are a great bread. She is so lovable, not too big or too small, and barely barks (she is actually laying on my lap as we speak because I have been away...she missed me lol) We got her from a breeder in Florida..very reputable.
If you want any more info I would be glad to pass it along!

i think itreally depends on the dog..not necessarily the breed. the most vicious evil dog I've ever met was a mini poodle named Pixie. omg that dog was the devil! hahahahaha.

Re: question about dogs?? help
I have a pomeranian. He is super handsome and sweet BUT
1) LOTS OF SHEDDING. If you are a nal about hair on your clothes/furniture, etc, this is not the dog for you. They also require constant grooming which can get expensive. 2) They are completely devoted to 'their person.' WHich in our case, is FH. They will follow their person around like a shadow. Not only our pom, all the poms we know are the same way. So if you are looking for a dog that is super friendly with everyone and other dogs, this may not be the breed for you. The positive is that our pom will always come when we call him and even off leash he doesn't go far away from us.
We got him from a breeder upstate who owns the parents and raises the puppies (one litter at a time) in their home. I felt great about doing it this way because I got to see his parent's personalities and that he really grew up in a nice clean home with plenty of socialization.
I also have a cockapoo who is the sweetest thing ever. Such a mush dog and doesn't shed much. Very, very smart. However, I don't know if I'd recommend the breed for a beginner because he is very rambunctious and was the hardest to train of my three dogs. He is probably bigger than you are looking for as well.
I have a 13 year old beagle shep mix adopted from NSAL. SOOO smart and the easiest to train of the three but it is nearly impossible to adopt a small dog let alone puppy from NSAL. I tried to adopt a small dog from petfinder as well and many places dont adopt out puppies to homes where there is no one home all day to watch the puppy.
Like many of the girls suggested, spend time with dogs and read a lot...the last thing you want to do is have to give a dog back after you bonded with him/her. Puppies also have so much energy and need a firm trainer and you can't be firm if you are scared.
Ask me any questions anytime!

Doggies are the best!!! I highly recommend Adoption.. there are tons of Shelters with so many adorable loving puppies!! Theres usually shelters near or around every town.
if you want a small dog stick to yorkies, pomeranians, Shitzu (sp?) pugs, shelties, jack russel....
