Question about fasting during Lent...

Question about fasting during Lent...

DH and I have had this same arguement every year and my mom agrees with him too.

Ok the whole thing about lent is that Jesus fasted for 40 days hench that's why we choose to give up eating something we love for forty days during lent...now if you give it up something that means you can't have it for 40 days right???...the arguement is that DH says except for Sundays...that just doesn't make any sense, to me it defeats the purpose of fasting. Fasthing to me means to go without. I went to catholic school all my life and in religion class I never remember them telling us that when you give up something during lent that sundays were an exception. Did Jesus make this same exception when he fasted?

What do you ladies think? I feel like asking my priest...seriously...

I've NEVER heard of a Sunday exception and I suffered through 8 years of Catholic school!

Sorry, but I think your DH is really reaching!!

I 100% totally agree with you. But I would have your priest explain it to FH so there are no questions!!

My grandmother who was one of the most religious people I know told me about the Sunday exception. I don't take advantage of it every Sunday during Lent but I might on one or two of them.

I agree with you. I went to Catholic school and taught CCD and I never told my children that what they gave up for Lent they can have Sunday. Like you said, Jesus did not stop fasting on Sunday so either do we.

I've heard this, but I don't think it's accurate. I know that the Vatican granted an exemption on St. Patrick's Day one year when it fell on a Friday--so that people could eat their corned beef.

I have also heard about the Sunday thing. But don't agree. I guess it just comes down to religion being a personal thing and some people do things a little differently.

No, the Sunday thing is true. Lent is 40 days. If you count from Feb 9th, (Ash Wednesday) till March 27 (Easter) and leave out the Sundays you get 40 days, if you count them you get 6 extra days in there. Check it on the calendar.

Oh yes, I have definitely heard of the Sunday exemption thing .. and I went to 8 yrs of Catholic school also

I do not know the accuracy or authentity of this , however- so I kinda think some of my Catholic friends used to use this as an excuse to blow their fasts

I do agree with the fact that if you are going to fast, you fast the 40 days -

IMO, if you're gonna do it, it's all or nothing

Yes, that is what I was told. ALthough, I didn't hear that untill college, so I never did it. Some of my friends used to take advantag eof it l, sicen we wer ealwyas up late, considerignaturdya after Midnight the begining of their expetion.

I thikn the not counting SUnday as aprt of teh 40 days is because it is a celebration & that woudl conflicte with the sacrifice that Lent is supposed to refelct. Although, the masses are toned down to reflec t Lent ( no hallelujah's, no weddings)
