DH and I have had this same arguement every year and my mom agrees with him too.
Ok the whole thing about lent is that Jesus fasted for 40 days hench that's why we choose to give up eating something we love for forty days during lent...now if you give it up something that means you can't have it for 40 days right???...the arguement is that DH says except for Sundays...that just doesn't make any sense, to me it defeats the purpose of fasting. Fasthing to me means to go without. I went to catholic school all my life and in religion class I never remember them telling us that when you give up something during lent that sundays were an exception. Did Jesus make this same exception when he fasted?
What do you ladies think? I feel like asking my priest...seriously...

Re: Question about fasting during Lent...
MayDay and Moehick... like you've seen, it's all about interpretation and what you know!
But Bedda, I'm still confused. If you follow the fasting that strictly, what were the exceptions you mentioned? And, by making exceptions, doesn't that mean you're doing exactly what you're annoyed at your Dh for doing?

I grew up with the Sunday Exemption also . I never would have made it through my childhood without it!

Re: Question about fasting during Lent...
I grew up in a very religious and somewaht old school family, and I was taught the Sunday exception. I'm not sure if it's a church thing, or just something they tell kids to help them through it, but really who cares.
if you don't want to have Sunday as an exemption, then don't, if your DH does, then that's fine for him. Religion, and especially lent is a very personal thing. lent is a time of PERSONAL introspection and prayer and fasting, what I do really has nothing to do with what someone else does and it's the same for your DH. Jesus may have fasted for 40 days, and he didn't quit his fast on Sundays, but lent is a time to REMEMBER Jesus' forty days in the desert, not replicate it.
it's a personal decision. The way people were brought up in teir religions is a touchy and personal subject. The things people were brought up with are not easy to let go. So just let DH take his Sundays off, even God rested on Sunday, and you can go on fasting. As many things as you do as a couple, fasting doesn't need to be one of them, and really, by definition it's personal.

Re: Question about fasting during Lent...
Growing up, we looked forward to Sundays so we could be exempt.
Looking back, it's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.
