Question about no meat on Fridays during lent...

Original post by bedda26

I am catholic and was taught that you can't meat on Fridays during lent. Does that include chicken? Because I thought it did until some people here at work said you could have chicken, that's it's only red meat that you can't have.

can anyone clear this up?

I was always taught no meat meant meat (all kinds), chicken and turkey.

Poultry is still meat. You can eat chicken and other meats during lent just not on Ash Wednesday, or any Friday.

That is correct. Also, a lot of people including me do no eat Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday.

The reason behind the 'no meat on friday' for lent was actually developed to show that we have an awareness to those in other countries (our brothers and sisters) who suffer and for them, meat is a rarity.

This is what i was told and found it very interesting...its more symbolic...to show that we can do without the luxury of meat during the 40 days.

I was told by our priest that helped with precana that its not so much being picky about what give up..its ok to have chicken if you forget...it isn't a 'sin'. Its more the point to do without something considered a luxury. For example he told me it doesn't make much sense to give up meat but then order a lobster dinner....just wanted to share what i was told...I found it really interesting!

Do you abstain from meat on Fridays during the rest of the year? My parents always have and it drove me crazy because every Friday was either fish sticks or filet of flounder!

Another reason why no meat and why we need to give something up is that for 40 days Jesus fasted and since we can not fast for 40 days we need to give something up for 40 days and obstain from meat on the Fridays during Lent.

Johhny&Maur... that makes so much sense about the lobster dinner!

And Nylisa... It was always impressed upon me that giving something up was key to Lent. It's the importance of the symbolism like what you said, right?

Exactly. You need to understand why you need to give something up in order to give it up. I used to tell my students that if you do not know why you need to give something up and giving something up is a waste.

Normally, it is no White or Red meat. Each diocese is permitted to 'bend' the rules as they see fit.

Just an added piece of info:

The day before Ash Wednesday is traditionally referred to as Shrove Tuesday or Shrovetide - and over the centuries people casually referred to it as 'Pancake tuesday.' People would get to eat pancakes - with eggs, flour and milk - which were 'luxuries' that they would then have to give up during Lent.

I remember living in Ireland a few years ago and my roommates made this huge batch of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and explained it to me - it was a big deal over there.

I could be wrong - but I was brought up believing that 'no meat' included chicken .. we never ate red meat, chicken, pork etc. on Friday's during Lent.. only fish or pasta

Same here.
