Question about shower gifts--- this is odd

Original post by cedesnyc

So....I had my shower last sat. My mom and sis surprised me w/ a bash...it was so nice and FUN!!!

I didn't want a shower b/c there's no point in registering since FH and I have a house and 2 yrs ago we had a huge housewarming party (before we got engaged) and I still have gifts that i haven't used.

Anyhow...people took the liberty to give me gifts which was nice of them...but I got one in particular that was odd from FH's cousin which reads.

'Your shower and wedding gift is our free week at our time share' let us know when you want to go and I'll book the hotel only.

Is this a gift?
So we (fh and I) and his cousin own timeshares in Disney in seperate hotels and I get the same benefits she gets. So..the flight is not included...so the gift is what?? her week?
Please help me make sense of this???? what you do, feel or react? i don't know wether to laugh, be upset or what?

IF it makes you feel any better...

Way back when my grandmother got married... the gift from her mother (which would be my greatgrandmother) was.... drum roll please....

She paid to have my grandmothers OLD bedroom set delivered to her new apartment with her new husband to get it out of her house!!!!

This was sometime around 1945 to 1950. Still.... not the best gift AND from your own mother no less. HAHAHAHA!!!

omg I laughed so hard readng this...hahaha
my stomach hurts

Maybe they couldn't afford to give you gifts right now for your shower & wedding. Their timeshare is already paid for, probably for years now. To me it seems like they still wanted to give you a gift even though they couldn't buy you anything. Times are tough, I am unemployed, and we have a lot of weddings to go to. It gets kinda expensive. I just think they should have worded the card more clearly. Tell you where the time share is, what week it is, if you can switch dates or locations to somewhere else. Good luck either way, it may turn out better that it seems.

I am sure they were trying to be nice, but I think it stinks to give people a 'gift' that then puts more of a burden on them!

My friends got the same thing from someone as an engagement gift, and with saving for the wedding, they couldnt afford taking off the time and spending on the airfare, so they didnt use the gift.

Just odd!

Hahaha!! It's very funny!! And completly true!! my grandmother describes her as 'not the nicest person'. But I describe my grandmother that same exact way!! I think she rubbed off on my grandmother!! haha!! But my grandmother isn't cheap... she is VERY giving.. BUT with a price tag attached!! If you get a nice gift from her... then you are expected to be at her beck and call. Like a little servant.

My son was given someone's timeshare as a gift. They were able to choose from a number of dates and a lot of different places. They ended up getting 7 days in Hawaii (was originally going to be the Bahamas). They used it for their honeymoon and added a few days at another resort. Maybe you can use it for your six month anniversary at a different location.
