i 100% prefer a pencil paper test over the computer... i like to be able to skip around and answer the questions i know and then go back to the harder ones... with the computer based test, the questions get harder or easier depending on if you go the question correct or incorrect.... i became very aware of this on the verbal portion of the test and got very discouraged when i got an easier word because it meant that i got the last one wrong and it threw me off completely!!!!!!! as a result my difference in verbal and math scores was around 150 points from what i remember- and while my math is a stronger ability than my vocab, my vocab isn't as weak as it came out to be

Oh thanks for pointing that out JuneBride. I'm definitely going to take the paper test now.

I don't remember having an option but if i did i probably would have chosen paper based. Although with the computer based you receive your score right then and there.
They both have pros and cons but the other girls have already mentioned the others

Re: Question About the GRE Test

You can't take the paper based test unless you plan to travel to Guam for it.

In the US 99% of the time it's a CAT (computer adaptive test). You don't have a choice.

You WILL want to prepare for it because it is adaptive, meaning the test changes based on how you perform on it, so that changes your approach to the test at differerent times.

Feel free to FM me. I have worked in test prep for 9 years and I'm finally preparing for my own GRE right now!

You can NOT do this on the GRE. You can't go backwards. You have to answer each question and move on.
