Question for all Cops wives or future wives

Original post by litlone555

Does it get any better? Do you get used to it? I hate being alone on the weekend and going and doing things by myself all the time.

FI is a cop in Queens. He's working more now because of the convention but even before that I didnt get to see him that much. And his schedule is different so Im going to bed and he's just walking in the door wide awake and ready to hang out. I know how much he loves his job but I didnt realize how much it was going to bother me. Anyone have any advise, suggestions, anything?

Re: Question for all Cops wives or future wives

Reading all these posts has really made me feel better.... Things are getting so hard for us and it's nice to know that others are experiencing the same thing. I haven't seen FH since last Thurs (thanks to the convention ) and to top it all off they gave him OT for Saturday and Monday also- his regular days off (which change each week)! I am getting sort of used to doing things on my own but, I'm a little lonely!!

i once heard someone say it takes an amazing man to be a cop and even more amazing woman to be his wife

This is the best quote.

I love the support on this thread. Since my FI is still in the academy (again!), I don't know any other NYPD spouses, so this has really helped.

I find some days are easier than others. Outings with friends are not the same b/c I am always there by myself. Happened just this sunday, too. 5 couples and me.

It think it will be easier once we are married . . . at least we will see eachother in passing. I last saw my sweetie on August 22 and hopefully I will see him on Friday, September 3 when I pick him up at the academy. We try to find the time or make the time to be together. On Fridays, I basically work 9am to 6:30pm or 7, come home, eat dinner, take a nap, do chores, etc., and leave my house at 11:15 pm to pick him up a the academy to drive him home. Its a pain and I hate driving in Manhattan, but it makes his life a bit easier and gives us a tiny bit of additional time together.

The planning of the wedding hasn't been as much fun as it can be b/c I've been doing it alone; I am a few days away from booking my reception site and he hasn't even seen it.

I feel bad complaining to him since he is trying to build our future, but still, since he is my best friend I miss him.

Re: Question for all Cops wives or future wives

God, i know how you all feel. It's been a crazy year for us. Last Sept. my FI was all about studying for the Seargents exam in NYPD. He was taking courses and everything. The promise then was Dec. 15 i'm all yours.
Jan 15th he resigned from NYPD and began the Nassau County police academy!! His schedule was crazy. 6 days a week, and when he was home, he was studying or tired. It was SOOO hard to be supportive and strong during those times. ANd yes definitely lonely.
July 16th he graduated! His schedule is at least a little better now. and all the sacrifice and heartache was well worth it. I don't know what the future holds, i know that it will be tough, but i know he did all of those things for our future, and our children's future. We'll be married in 6 months and he calls me his wedding secretary, he's been as involved in the planning as he could possibly be. But mostly i know his heart is w/me even when he's not.

Hang in there ladies! It's good to know we're not alone!

As I told you, I'm the one that's the Cop, I should tell my FH to talk to all of you, because I know this is how he feels. I hate when we are suppose to do 'couple things' and I have to go to work, then he goes by himself Everyone always asks him where I am and I'm ALWAYS working. I have to work Monday also, well Sunday night into Monday, and I know I'll be at that parade ALLLLL Day..... Not Fun!!! Meanwhile Dave will be BBQ'ing with out me, once again...

Thanks to all concerning your thoughts, I'm going to show him, so he doesn't feel like he's the only one....

WOW! I am so surprised to hear everyone writing my thoughts! My FH is currently in the State Trooper Academy in Albany. Its a 6 month academy and he gets to come home on weekends.. We lived together for three years now and it is really hard without him here... but all the wedding plans keep me going and remind me that what we are going through now is for a great future!!!

My FH is a New York State Trooper. Just to warn you it does not get any better. I was with him through the academy and it was rough. The thing is they do not place you on Long Island. There is a waiting list and we have been waiting for him to come back for almost a year. He graduated last sept. Right now he is in the Poughkeepsie area. He has a apt. there and comes home on his days off. It really sucks and I miss him all the time. It is really worth it though. It is an awesome job, the pay is great and in the future it will pay off.

My FH is a Marine and will be a State Trooper when he gets out, I don't think you ever really get used to it you just get stronger and are able to go on dealing with it.

That is an awesome quote!
FH works in Brooklyn, but this week is working at the convention. It sucks, plain and simple, with a capital SUK. He wont have a weekend off until November, which means guess who is doing ALL the planning herself, plus full time job, plus starting weekend grad school classes?

I would never want him to do anything else than what he loves, though.

I thought it was OVER tonight??? ! I'm so sick of seeing the news bashing our guys well, little do they know how much our guys are giving up to be there!!! It's been well over a week now!!!

I understand why they chose NYC, but it is so impractical. Can you imagine what will happen if the Olympics come here in 2012??? I think I'd rather move out of the area.

Yesterday, my FI told me that there was a bomb scare right next to where he was working directing traffic. Helicopters, bomb squad, etc., were all brought in. I think there is so much more going on there that our loved ones are dealing with than the news will ever show.

Fi has been saying for the past 3-4 months he wants to move to FL. We are hoping ( ) that all works out the way we hope it will and will be moving to FL sometime after Sept 05.

i agree they deal with and see alot more then anyone knows. im sure there is alot that our guys deal with that they dont even tell us for fear we will totally lose it. i think that unless your a police officer or have a loved one that is oen you just cant understand what they have to deal with every day. hugs to all the girls that have to with stand another 12 hour tour tomorrow.

I'm leaving for workin about an hour, and I'm suppose to work my regular tour, I hope its not longer too, I'm so tired..

Believe me, If we could tell you everything that happens to us every day, you wouldn't let us out of the house. The news doesn't find out even about a quarter of the bomb scares that we get. We don't don't tell you things, so you can sleep and have peace of mind. It's bad enough our families have to worry about the 'normal' elements of this job, but to throw in terrorism too.... What is our country coming to... I get scared sometimes, but I have a good partner to talk to, I don't want Dave (my FH) to worry more than he does..

Thank you All of you are very special, and your future husbands are VERY lucky to have such caring and concerned loved ones as yourselves. You are why we do our jobs so well......

Re: Question for all Cops wives or future wives

I'm really having a hard time with all of this. Like I said its all petty new to me so up until 2 weekes ago FI shifts had him off for atleast 1 weekend day. Now he wont be off again on weekends until the end of October. I feel like evry conversation we have is rushed because he is at work or on his way to work. I also have a hard time with him going out after work while Im home. I know thats his only time to relax and go out but it feels like we have two seperate lives. I go out while he's not home and he goes out while Im sleeping. And when we are together we usually have his friends from work over for some drinks. We are never alone. Its like the NYPD has consumed our lives. Im really not used to it and to hear everyone say it doesnt get better makes me think how can I handle this for the next 20 somthing years. Im really upset lately probably because I havent seen him in over a week. I dont want to bother him with all of this because he loves his job, he doesnt want to hear that I hate it. We did this for 4 years while he was in the military and now its happening again. Some times I dont know if I can handle it. I love him so much and would never want to be with out him but sometimes I feel like I already am with out him. If that makes any sense at all.
