Question for my Pharmacists!

Question for my Pharmacists!

Where are my lovely pharmacists? I have a question. My derm. prescribed DOXYCYCLINE DELAYED-RELEASE TABLET - ORAL ( Doryx) for acne

He told me to take it before bed but on webmd it says not to lay down right after taking it

should i take those pills ( i forget what they are called but they contain that GOOD bacteria) to prevent a yeast infection?

should i worry about my BC?

THANKS!!

i would call the pharmacy and ask them about the descrpency. Maybe even call 2 if you want a second opinion

Re: Question for my Pharmacists!

first if it says to wait 30 min before laying down you have to do that!.. he just means at night when your home and not going to be out! and usually when you say before bed that means youll have at least 6 hours of not operating any machinery and that stuff.

i dont think you need to take the yeast infection stuff because it should tamper with your normal flora (learned what that was today) which is the good bacteria (yeast). but you can always check with your doc. i dont think so tho.

bcp.. unless it says it in the paper that they sent with the RX it should be fine !

I am taking doxyclcline and minoclylcine for my acne also. I never heard that you cant lay down after taking it. I take one cap twice a day, aftternoon and night. But you should not take any dairy products and you should eat before you take it

acidopholis (sp?) or eat yogurt!!
my nursing drug book says nothing about laying down or taking before bed but it does say not to take with dairy and may cause photosensitivity (be careful in hte sun you can get burned easier) and if it starts to cause stomach pain take with food. hth!

HAHA no you dont!! my book says to take 1 hour after eating and wait one hour to eat but that is only if you are taking it for periodontal disease.

Re: Question for my Pharmacists!

when you are advised not to lay down after taking a medication, it is usually because there is a risk of the medication refluxing and causing infection in the esophagus. I really haven't heard of this being a major risk for people taking doxycycline so I really wouldnt worry about it. You should try to make sure you have a yogurt everyday or maybe take some acidophilus supplements with your dinner if you are more prone to yeast infections. I hope that helps!

yes, you always have to use a back up method when you're taking antibiotics. Uh...i don't know if you want to actually know the reason why or not...hahaha...but yeah....use a back up while you're on the doxy.

Oh...and the doxy can be really irritating to your stomach and esophagus, so that's why they tell you not to lie down right afterwards (usually we tell people wait 1/2 hour). Because when you lie down, sometimes your stomach contents come back up a little (like when you have acid reflux) and with the doxy in your tummy, it may cause some major irritation. It also helps to take it with a lot of water.

I want to know the real reason....

hahaha okay...here goes....after you take your birth control pills and it reaches your intestines, the bacteria in your intestines (the good ones that are normally there) sort of 'digests' it and then your body reabsorbes it...and that's where you get your efficacy from.

When you take an antibiotic, it wipes out all bacteria, good AND bad. So you lose the bacteria in your intestines...and so you don't get as much 'digestion' of your BC pill so to speak. So you're not getting as much of the medication compared to when you're off your antibiotics.

oh...to prevent yeast infections, just drink a glass of cranberry juice a day!!! It acidifies your urine and kills most of the bacteria!

i swear by sugar-free cranberry juice to prevent urinary tract infections, i used to get them all the time before i started taking cranberry pills(sorry if TMI, lol). its not scientifically proven or anything but it always does to trick.

hahaha, yeah, even when I do get one (sorry, also TMI!!!!), I never take antibiotics to get rid of it. I just chug down like a gallon of cranberry juice....and I'm fine the next day.

yay thanks i love stuff like that - when i go to the doctor i am so annoying i want to know every single reaction and why it happens! there was a pharmacy where i used to work so i am friends with the pharmacists - every time i get a prescription i always have to know exactly how it works!
