Question for Teachers--NWR but need honest opinions....
How should I dress as a student teacher? Is it okay to wear Capris w/a blazer? Or should I stick to strictly pants?
Thanks in Advance - - I am sooo nervous!

dress pants and nice tops, skirts.. dressy casual. You don't need to wear a suit
no jeans or t-shirts.
capris are fine as long as they are dressy

You know in my experience it kind of depends what age level you are working with. The elementary teachers tend to dress a little more casual because they are constantly doing crafts and on the floor with their kids. Middle and High School teachers dress up more, and especially if you look really young when teaching the older kids you might want to dress more professional looking.

Capris are prob totally fine but if you feel unsure about it wait a couple days and see how everyone else is dressing.

agree with the above...
and can i add no baby-doll T's, pants that ride really low on your waist, shirts/blouses that are tight and/or show too much clevage ,etc. You'd be surprised what i've seen some student teachers wear to school. I've even heard kids say, 'I can see Ms. Smith's underwear!' (usually a thong in those low-rise pants!!)
I don't think this will be you, but i've seen a lot of student teachers that forget what is dressy for a night out at the club or with their friends, is NOT at all appropriate in a professional environment, epsecially an elementary school!

I would wait for a few days until you see how other people dress...base your outfits on how other, young teachers dress--I'm sure other teachers notice that tenured and untenured teachers dress a bit differently, lol! Especially if you are thinking about applying for a position in that district, or are looking for a positive recommendation, I would dress on the conservative side until your chairperson tells you otherwise- better to err on the side of professionalism....no t-shirts, tight shirts that show cleavage or belly, no jersey material, no clingly clothing, etc...

you could get away with capris- depending on the district
Ask your cooperating teacher to get an idea if there is an expected dress code or not.

When I did student teaching last semester, I went the first couple of days dressed up, but then I just tried to blend in with the atmosphere of the school...in some schools, teachers really get dressed up in suits, but in others, you could wear jeans and sneakers...you should feel that particular school out first...but it's always best to be overdressed than underdressed for the first couple of days..

I would day anything is acceptable except jeans and tees and clothing you would wear to a club (however i have seen teachers wear all of these). I would say business casual is appropriate.

I would wear pants and skirts the first few days to assess the situation.
My school is completely dress-casual. We can wear capri pants and the lnog shorts.

My school is pretty relaxed about what we were (which isn't always a good thing!) We get away with tanks, flip flops, etc....But, I would stick with a casual, comfortable look. If you're teaching elementary- you get dirty (you're in the meeting area, you do projects, etc). The Limited, NY & Company, Gap...they have great capris, blouses, sweater shirts...etc...hopet his helps!

I think it depends on the school. For the 1st day, I'd stick with dress pants and button down to be safe. My supervisor was pretty strict about that stuff whereas my cooperative teacher was lax about it.
