Since my fiance and I met almost 3 years ago we have been trying to find a synagogue that we like and feel at home at, but have been VERY unsuccessful. When we lived in Brooklyn, we tried one in Park Slope, but it was way too 'new age' for us w/a Cantor playing the bongos, and the vast majority of the congregation showing up in jogging pants...LITERALLY. Then when we moved to Queens we tried two synogogues near our house. One was completely empty on Friday night, and the other looked like an AARP convention. We both missed those traditional large family congregations that both of our synogogues had when we grew up, where there were members of every age to pray with.
So now we're gettting married and have no affiliation with any temples. We don't want a JP or just an officiant to marry us, and would like a real Rabbi. And at the risk of sounding completely sexist, we'd both like a male Rabbi. We're both a bit of traditionalists and just like a certain style. Can any of you ladies recommend your rabbis that married you and tell me what they were like?

Re: Rabbi for Hire???
We just found a very nice Rabbi (his synagogue is on Ocean Parkway & 18th Ave) He speaks Russian, English, Hebrew and Yiddish fluently. He is more orthodox so I don't know how strictly religious you want your wedding to be. He is deff more reformed but we wanted to me more on the traditional side. The diff really is that the ceremony will be a bit longer, he promised about 30 min and you'll have to cover your shoulders with something.
Anyway if you want to hear more and not scared about the orthodox thing FM and I'll give you more details.
He was really nice!!! FH is a super cautious about religious and officiants trying to make us into orthodox Jews along with performing the ceremony but even he loved him

I would def be interested in learning more about him, but I converted to judaism when I was 3 so I'm not sure if that would be an issue. I have my conversion papers, but even though I went to hebrew school for 6 years I never got a Bat Mitzvah so I'm not sure if that would be an issue. If it's a quasi orthodox ceremony does everyone have to cover their shoulders, or just me? Thanks!
