Racism on LI

I just saw this article and it really disturbed me...
article

Smithtown is right next door to me. Maybe I am naive, but I thought that kind of stuff didn't happen in my neighborhood.

that is terrible.

I dear anyone to send hate mail to my house with the price houses cost right about now. I will track you down before I move out of my house.

The evil ones probably can't afford to live where I am located anyway.

'We had lovely Negro, um, African-American neighbors to the left and right,' said Niebuhr, who is not suspected of sending the mailings. 'I think all that was blown out of proportion.'

That kills me. And I love how they add in 'who is not sspected fo sending the amailings. People are so sick. That's terrorism. if it isn't explicitly a crime they should make it one. That's absolutely disgusting!

what- I can't believe she used the word 'Negro'- what year does she think it is!

I would bet $100 she sent the letters-

that's why it's hilarious that they had to add 'who is not suspected of seding the etters'

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say the word 'negro' to describe someone...

Unfortunately there is hate because of color, I hope your children will not be subjected to that. There is such ignorance in this world. I live in the south and to be honest, I think LI is worse than where I live....crazy right?

Re: Racism on LI

The letter sending really should be a crime because it's language that is the seed of hatred. I mean people don't just get up one day and beat someone up because of thier race, religions, sexual orientation, whatever. It starts when the learn all of the N words and F words and everything else. And that kind of intimidation is a few steps up from that, and is something that could escalate into violence. I hope they are able to do a full investigation and charge them with a hate crime, because that's what it is.

I don't have to experience a lot of racism because I'm white, but when iw as dating a hispanic guy, I was so shocked by the looks and comments we got from people in public. it was horrific. As much as people hate a race, or this or that, it seems like they have an even bigger problem with interracial couples.

That is so upsetting to read. It is awful that there are still people out there with such bigotted attitudes in this day and age. What are people so threatened by that they need to send out hate mail like this?

Yeah, I thought that comment from the naighbor was a bit um..ignorant. They would be at the top of my suspect list. I really feel sooo bad for these people, being forced out of their home. I would probably do the same thing, for tha sake of my children, but if I didn't have children, I would be fighting it like crazy and not budging. That is soooo wrong.

It is truly awful. I have experienced racial and religious bigotry. I am a white Jew. You would be surprised how many people think I push the horns down in my head during the day and they come out at night. NY does not equal progressive thinking - especially when I see swastikas painted on the side of a PETCO in the very town I am moving to next month. This story does not shock me in the least. It is sad but it doesn't shock me.

Edited for spelling

I feel the same way, I might move just for the safety fo my kids but if not for kids I'd stay and fight like heck.

I drove my mom to church one day in anther neighborhood and I saw several cars all around the neighborhood with swastikas on them, and each one ahd cops around it, I'm glad the cops were so on top of it. but is t just made me so sick

What planet is this woman on!?!?!? I'm so glad she was quoted verbatim...Exposes her for exactly who she is....

I feel awful for that family. I can't even imagine what they went through. And for the papers to say that no crime was committed!?!?!?!?! I think sending any letter with a reference to Hitler is clearly threatening and harrassing. How about tampering with mail!?!? Since when isn't that a federal offense. I would be ANGRY if I was the family and this is what the officials told me.

Just disgusting....

what a truly horrible story.....it's embarassing for the rest of us on LI/NYC that don't think so small-minded.

Re: Racism on LI

being from smithtown , I truly never realized people were so racist there, no more than other places I have been... it is so sad... since i am marrying a hispanic man I am offended and I hope that my children NEVER have to face racism, i know it may occur, but it would rip my heart to shreds if my children were verbally/physically abused because they are two ethnicities. I live in CT now and I havent had people look at me and my fh in a negative way- at least not that i am aware of...

it is so sad that this family had to deal with this...too bad there are people in this world who spend too much time hating on others...what a shame

That is just so pathetic and sad. I cannot believe that we live in a world where this type of crap takes place and isn't even designated a CRIME!

I just hope my children grow up in a world more toleratant than this one.

How bizarre was that neighbor! Negro's! Come on lady- you are sure you didn't send the note

Yep yep..as someone who had to report her coworker for anti-semitic remarks made on more than 1 occasion, I hear you.

sick, sick, sick. Why one person would think the are ABOVE another because of their color of skin or religion is beyond me. It's just terrible!

ETA: I honestly was afraid to take DHs last name because it is VERY Jewish. We are both Catholic, not like it really matters, but his great great grandfather was Jewish. I hate to say it, but sometimes I worry because there are some hateful people out there

I'm not so sure that our children will experience a more tolerant environment. This crap has been going on since the beginning of time and it passes from generation to generation. Children learn what they see in their home and it continues. It's disgusting, pathetic, unacceptable behavior that is fueled by ignorance, stupidity and hatred and unless those pathetic loosers that exhibit this disgusting behavior start showing their children something different, we will have yet another generation of racists on our hands.

I'm sorry to go on and on but I have no tolerance for this crap, I see it on a daily basis and have had some unpleasant experiences in my personal life as well.
