rant about tipping

rant about tipping

i'm very angry about the whole TIPPING thing.

i'm paying (a lot of money, i might add) for a service/product [PERIOD]. i'm receiving a service/product in exchange for my hard-earned money [PERIOD].

why the *F*, do i have to hand these people MORE OF MY MONEY!!!!!???????

no one gives me a tip for showing up on time at work.

if your job is to take pictures/play music/sweep the floor/cook/drive/WHATEVER why should i HAVE TO PAY YOU MORE, JUST FOR SHOWING UP????!!!!!

this is really pissing me off.

am i the only one???

Not at all!! Especially when you are shelling thousands of dollars for something that really doesn't cost that much. It gets crazy with the tipping. People in the wedding industry must be millionaires ripping people off!!!!

Well, what would be the worse that could happen for not tipping? If you don't tip until after everything is over you won't have to see anyone, except the photographer, again. Give everyone a big Thank You hug and only tip the photographer so he doesn't delete your pics or alter them all and give you a mustache.

I totally underatand and agree! I just went for my menu selection at the RH and they added on 2 more people that I need to tip. They actually gave me a print out that states each person, their duties on my wedding day and what the recommdeded tip is. One of them is the chef! Are they kidding?????? It is out of control. I am only tipping those people who IMO went above and beyond.

Try this one! The church we are getting married at wants us to go to church every week, so we have been, but we have to give a donation at mass...AND THEY WANT $500 FOR A CEREMONY, NOT EVEN A MASS!!!!! TOO MUCH MONEY!! EVERYWHERE I TURN I AM HANDING IT OUT!!

I totally understand, if I am paying 20% service charge is that not for tipping, I mean do they think we are made of money. I do not think I am tipping everone, how can I afford to Seariously.

Re: rant about tipping

I only tipped 2 vendors.

- The limo ($25)

- The maitre d' (the hall told us he was not part of the gratuity but it was at our discretion to tip him). We did not follow the $3-5 per plate tip (totally insane!) but we gave him a nice tip. He did a great job.

I did not tip anybody else. With the amount of money I paid, I did not think it was justified.

OR -

Tipping is a sign of exceptional work...

so I don't mind tipping, but at MY discretion.

NOT a set amount. AND NOT ON TOP of an already INCLUDED GRATUITY! That makes me want to YAK!

And also not when the owner of a company is doing the work since he/she (usually) gets all the money in pocket anyway!

I'm with you girls. I think it's insane that most people and/or places expect a tip from you regardlesss of whether or not you're happy with the service.

I think if we started a revolution most vendors would cater more to us because they would know that their tip would depend on the type of service offered.

Having said that, how many of us will chicken out & still tip the day of?

this is how i'm 'planning it'... if someone DOES go above and beyond, i might change....

BAND (playing for free.. fh sometimes sings with them)... since i have to provide my own alcohol (liquor licenses in nj suck), they get to take all the left over beer

EVERYONE ELSE will have to wait until i get back from my hm. i've already told moh to keep a running tab of the things i mention (she's a school teacher and very organized ) that way, when i get back i will write letters and send money then. TO MY DISCRESSION.

I AM NOT TAKING CASH TO MY WEDDING [period]

I completely agree.. and one of the things i LOVE about my RH is that they DO NOT include the tip or 20% service charge in the price, becuase they understand that a tip should be earned, not automatic... so its totally up to my discretion to tip at the end of the night.

most of my vendors bent over backward for me during my planning process. they put up with my moods and my comments.

and then they came on my wedding day and did a FABULOUS job.

so yes, they deserved a tip.

i wish i could have given some of them more!!!

Re: rant about tipping

The ONLY reason I disagree is because I'm a waitress and I work FOR tips. My pay is only $4.25 an hour and since my tips are taxed...they take most if not all of that pay.

On that note, the only people who should be tipped, I think, are those who are performing a service outside of what they are originally being payed for (for example-- when you hire a florist, you are paying for the flowers, whatever container they are in, and the labor to arrange them. When you tip, you should be tipping for the delivery because those people probably aren't making any kind of pay).

Other than that, I agree....I don't understand tipping a DJ or an officiant or anything like that.

Honestly... I know it is going to create some 'bad' reactions... I don't feel I have to pay anyone because their boss is not paying them enough.

This is not my problem!

Re: rant about tipping

i did not give the 'suggested' amounts my maitre d was great, but he did not get 3-5 a person. tipping is ridiculous, especially when they tell me what i'm supposed to tip
