Gifts are not mandatory for an engagment party or wedding. We had a few of DHs friends come to the wedding and engagement party with out a gift or card. We also had a few friends and OOT family members not give a card or gift and a couple of people gave VERY small gifts. While personally I would never show up at a party without something many people do not think twice about it. People have up to a year to give a wedding gift and we did receive several gifts in the weeks following our wedding. As for your friend not showing up it is rude but many people do not care...We had it happen at our wedding and had to pay to cover the plates anyway...I was pi$$ed but there is nothing you can do about it.

that's exactly why we're considering un-inviting him ... he hasn't come to the past 3 or 4 events even though he said that he def would be there. we're not sure we trust him to definitely show up to the wedding at this point.
as for the two people who came empty handed, i'm pretty much over it

Re: really???!!!
I would be mad about the friend not showing up. Very rude to not call.
As for the gifts, I wouldnt be mad. I personally wouldnt show up empty handed, but an e-party is really a celebration of the engagement and gifts arent required. I didnt expect anyone to bring agift to my e-party-- just wanted to celebrate and have fun with my friends and family. They already have to give me a shower and wedding gift...so I didnt care if they gave another one. Although, most did and it was very much appreciated

I would not invite the no show to the wedding. If he was sick he should have at least called to say so, even if it was the next day. One of my supposed best friends from college (although we're not nearly as close as we used to be) said she was coming to my engagement party and then the morning of my party her FB status was 'Headed to Tunes with my girlies! Can't wait!'. Haven't spoken to her since and won't ever again.
