Recommendations for nice North Shore towns?

Original post by bluegrl24ny

I've been doing a lot of 'just curious' posting lately - you can tell I have a lot on my mind!! So here's my curious question of the day

When we are ready for a new home (about 2-3 years from now) DH has mentioned that he would like to look on the North Shore/Nassau. I'm just bored at work and want to do some search on mlsli.com to see what's out there - does anyone have any specific towns they can recommend where the home prices aren't too ridiculously expensive? Our range is most likely going to be $325-425K so I'd like to know what's avaialble in that area for our budget. I've seen many nice houses in Plainview, but was looking for some other towns as well. Thanks so much!!

thanks - but Centereach is a little too far out for us right now. We're looking to stay in Nassau since I commute into the city for my job. Even though those home prices are really nice, esp the possible 2nd income - I just can't take a longer commute!

I commute to the city too. I catch the express train from Northport at 7:34 and I'm in the city at 8:50. It's not bad at all.

Cool, good luck!
Just FYI Huntington is about 10 minutes closer to Nassau compared to Northport and there is a train station in Huntington, Northport and Greenlawn. My express train makes all 3 stops in the morning (I'm on the Port Jefferson Branch of the LIRR)

There are some really cute areas/homes in Huntington (our tenants just moved out to a house they bought in Huntington Station) but there are some so-so areas too - a realtor would be able to help you with that.

We use Jerry Wood at Coach realtors in East Northport (I grew up with his daughter).

I have friends who live in Huntginton too in a really cute neighborhood.

I've been commuting for 18 months from Kings Park (one stop east of Northport) and I HATE the commute.

If you want Nassau, you can also try Hicksville, which I think is in Nassau and has a well-served train station. Or maybe a condo/co-op in Mineola or Great Neck?

I've been doing it for almost 8 years from Northport, I guess I'm used to it maybe? I'm home in one hour at night -I take the 7 train to Hunters POint and I get the 5:47 train from Hunters POint which gets me to Northport at 6:50. I like to read/sleep on the train too.

Just a little help... most of the homes north of the train tracks in Huntington Station are pretty decent areas and most areas south of Jericho are prety nice.

No but my (much younger than me) brother and sister are. They are now 25 and 24. FM me if you want their names.

Re: the commute - it may be an hour 20 on the train from KP but add on the trip to the station (5 -10 car ride) and then the subway (10-15 usually to most places in the city) and you are looking at a door-to-door one-way ommute of one hour 45 minutes.

Forget about New Hyde Park the houses are expensive. maybe try East Meadow or Westbury (but not in Westbury Schools). Lots of areas in Westbury are in Carle place, East meadow and Jericho schools.

I grew up i n East Norwich (basically part of Oyster Bay). While you may have to search, you can find something for around $400K - and there really is no 'bad' part to East Norwich (it's just too small to actually have a 'bad' part).

BTW - I live in Huntington Station now - and if you search out the neighborhoods (like someone said above) you can find something in your price range.

Good luck!

That's where I am now and I love it here. But I will say that the houses around me are selling in the upper $500K range, most being in the $600-$700 range.

I'm so jealous!!! I miss it so much! I lived there for the better part of 25 years - it will always be my home! What part do you live in?
