recommended books (I know this has been done 34983408 times)

Original post by MikeandJess

I'm finally finishing up my semester tomorrow and I'm going to have some free time to read about something other than psychopathic murderers. Can you girls recommend something light/funny?

I am currently reading The Pact by Jodi Picault.
I just read The Kite Runner-I know it's a really popular book right now and a lot of people have read it, but I have to say it was the best book I have read in a while...they are also coming out with a movie

i read something blue and something borrowed by emily griffin (maybe griffith) earlier this year, and they were both really good. she has a third book, baby proof that's also out, but i haven't read that one yet.

I loved something borrowed, and something blue. Baby Proof is on my christmas list.

Another good one I read over the summer is 'Knitting Under the Influence' but I don't know the author

All are quick reads (2-3 days depending on how fast you read and how much time you have on your hands), and are fun!

omg i love something borrowed and something blue...i also read baby proof but it wasnt nearly as good as the other two...its not a sequel to the other ones...it mentions a couple of simialar names though.. anyway i told so many people about it and they all loved it..they are fun easy read books....

THATS THE ONE I WAS TRYING TO REMEBER!! Loved them they were good... i agree the baby one was not as good as the others...

My fav book ever is Atonement - so excited to see the move.
Also try :
The Girls by Lori Lansens
On Beauty - Zadie Smith
Memory Keeper's Daughter - Kim Edwards
Three Junes by Julia Glass
Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen
Love in the Time of Cholera - it's Oprah's book this month...
Then We Came To The End - Joshua Ferris

I'm kind of an obsessive reader and I used to work in publishing - so I could go on forever

I HAAAAAAAAAAATEd On Beauty.

My mother recommended it and I loved Howards End... but I dont know something about that book annoyed me.

I'm too stubborn not to finish a book though.. lol

I have a ton of books to recommend b/c I read SO MUCH... but I dont always lOVE what I read so I'm going to list the REAL page turners... the ones I just couldn't put down.

The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger

Words can't describe how good this story is...

The Lovely Bones - Alice Seabold

White Oleander - Janet Fitch
--The movie ****** but the book was great
Year of Wonders - Geraldine Brooks
This book was really cool, it was about the Bubonic Plague.

And I LOVE anything by Jennifer Weiner... Mainly Good in Bed and In Her Shoes.

edited to add Atonement... CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THAT MOVIE BC THE BOOK WAS SO GOOD AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

That's so funny and so true that you said that. Tat's how I met one of my closest friends. I had the book in class one day and came up to me to tell me how great it was. Friends ever since!

For those who liked the Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold's newest book is out - it's getting mixed reviews and is very dark. But some people are loving it. It is called The Almost Moon.

Also, I'm reading the Golden Compass series right now and really enjoying it. I'm on the third book.

Carl Hiassen - he's great - I think you would really like his humor Jess - he's sarcastic and witty - very tongue-in-cheek.

He's an environmentalist (most of his books take place in or near the Everglades) so his novels involve say, people who litter - they end up getting taught a really bizarre lesson - like tying them up with garbage in their underwear or something. Something very appropriate for the nature of their crimes.

I've read Strip Tease, Nature Girl, Stormy Weather (good one), Lucky You, and Sick Puppy (another good one).

You'd really enjoy his humor I think....
