Registering

I'm getting married on July 4,2003. Is it too earlier for me to register for gifts? We're not having an engagement party...

I`m getting married the next day!

My FH and I are looking to buy a house right now. I will probably register right when we move in. I am afraid that people (and by that I mean my mother and grandmother) will start buying me random little things that I don`t particularly want. For instance, my mom bought some random dishes and silverware for me for Christmas, that does not match anything I have or want to have. The silverware is gold. That`s right gold. Mom doesn`t get the concept of SILVERware! Unfortunately, she was so excited to buy me things for a house, that I did not have the heart to ask her to return them. So know I have yucky dishes and shiny gold utensils that I will need to pull out when my parents visit for a few years. So I am going to register before the next gift-giving event in my life. If, however, you do not have crazy female relatives who may be looking at lime green dirtdevils at this very moment, then you should be fine waiting until October or November. It is probably better to wait anyway so that you don`t have to worry about discontinued items. Becky

Becky - I'm so excited to meet someone getting married the same weekend! Your email made me laugh. Sorry to hear about your dishes and GOLDware that you're stuck with. Where are you getting married? I'm getting married at the Watermill. So far I've booked the hall and DJ. Have you booked anything yet?

You should probably wait until closer to the wedding, a few months before - stores change their inventories on many items, and things you choose now may not be available when it comes time for people to purchase gifts for your shower and/or wedding. I am getting married this June and I registered in January. Good Luck!

I`m getting married the next day!

I love the Watermill!! I grew up in Centereach and I have been to Sweet 16s and one rockin New Year`s Eve there, so I felt too Watermilled-out to book my wedding there. But it is so gorgeous. When I was there for NYE a few years ago I could not believe what a fantastic job they did renovating it. I'm sure that your wedding is going to fabulous. I booked the Hamlet in Happauge. It was only the second place that we looked at and almost as soon as we walked in we knew we were done looking. I am hoping that everything else goes that smoothly. I have been looking into photographers and hope to get back to the island sometime in March to cross that off my list. Hopefully my future SIL will have her baby when she is due so I can get away at the end of the month! Which DJ did you book?

That's great that you booked the Hamlet! I didn't even get to see it. I'm going to block some hotel rooms at the Wyndham next door to the Hamlet and I'm guessing you're probably going to do the same! I booked Invitation to Dance as my DJ...They're great! I'm now looking into Photographers, but a lot of them are out of my price range. I live in Manhattan so it's hard to plan from here. My parents live on L.I. so I need to make a trip out there so that I can run some wedding errands. What photographers are you planning to look at? I'm hoping to go in late March to look at some.

I`m getting married the next day!

Hey Becky and Julykbride! Guess what? I`m getting married July 6, 2003...so looks like we complete the weekend! :-) my wedding`s at Land`s End but we haven`t booked anything else yet. I don`t live in NY anymore so it`s not easy. Any recommendations are definitely appreciated...we should all three stay in touch as it gets closer! My big task now is buying a dress...have either of you gotten your dresses yet? I saw two that I really liked and can`t decide! One is 3x as much as the other, but it`s the one that made my mom cry. What to do!

Julykbride and AllisonMT

So, we have Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we are all planning our weddings from far away! I am in Maryland. I am hoping to come to LI the last weekend in March to look at photographers, defintely VIP, Photos of the Heart, Mark Kaufman, Laurie Studios and Imagine Studios. I might take off Good Friday and do it Easter weekend. Not sure yet. I am trying to stick to a schedule to get one wedding vendor picked a month until I am finished. I don`t think that I am going to start looking for a dress until the fall. I am actually not sure if I want to buy it down here or on LI. I am leaning towards LI becuase I want to get it altered there and I don`t want to worry about how I am going to get it to my parents house when the time comes. Hey, Julykbride, I already reserved a block of rooms at the Wyndam. Lisa is the woman who worked with us. It is right on the same property as the Hamlet, so most of our out of town quests will stay there. They are keeping the lounge open for us so we can all hang a little longer after the reception ends. Can't wait!

Becky, Where in Maryland???

Becky, I live in Virginia! Are you in the DC metro area? How weird! I can`t believe you booked rooms already...is that pretty standard procedure. I hadn`t even THOUGHT of doing that yet (and I used to be an event planner...guess I`m losing my touch! :-) Either that, or I`m too swamped between my full-time job, doing my MBA part-time, and trying to plan a wedding from 300 miles away!) I am actually looking for my dress down here. I already have too many trips to make up to LI (and the drive is just getting longer and longer, doesn`t it seem?). One word of advice, though, is not to wait TOO long. I know I`m early, but they tell me it takes 4-6 months to even get the dress in BEFORE alterations, etc. So have you found that vendors in LI are typically accommodating when you want to make weekend appointments? I haven`t done much of this yet, but I`ve gotten a few who`ve said they can`t meet me on the weekend because they are busy doing weddings!

It seems like our weekend is a very popular weekend to get married! I think it's a great idea for all of us to stay in touch! Every now and then I start to feel the pressure of planning and it's 16 months away! So far I've just booked the hall and DJ. I went looking for dresses at one place so far. I fell in love with this one dress and it was way more than my mom wanted to spend, but she loved it even more than me! I am paying for the wedding and my mom wanted to pay for my dress, so I don't know what we're going to do about that dress. I'll probably just keep shopping around and get it if I can't find another that I love!

I can't believe I met someone who is getting married at the Watermill on the same day! My FI had asked me if found anyone yet who was doing that. I'm getting married there in the afternoon and have the downstairs room. What about you? Have you met with the party planner there? Do you plan on it? I called her to ask a question and she seemed upset that I haven't met with her yet. I live in NYC and don't make it out east too often so I don't know when I'm going to get to go.

So when do you girls plan to register? I am in the process of blocking rooms at the Wyndham for the night before my wedding and the night of. I wanted to do it early to get a lower price. My FI just has to figure out if we'll have the minimum 10 rooms on the second night. Are you staying at the Wyndham the night of your wedding with your FI? Allison - So far I've had problems with vendors being able to meet me on the weekends. I'll probably take a day off work and try to do it then. Would you believe that I live in NYC and it takes me 2 hours to get to my parents house on L.I. from my apt.????? And now my FI and I just bought a puppy so it's harder to get away on the weekends. Not that my FI really cares to go to L.I. to wedding plan anyway, so he probably wouldn't come. Is anyone else having a problem with their FI being involved???

July 4, 2003 weekend brides

Do you ladies have any interest in exchanging emails and continuing this discussion in a more personal forum? It`s getting more difficult to find these messages as they get buried further and further down on the message boards, and I hardly think anyone not getting married that weekend is interested in all our personal correspondence! :-) My email address is [email protected]. I`d love to continue chatting. Let me know! -Alison

I am getting married at night in the downstairs room. I spoke with the party planner last night but have not met her yet. I already have my dj and I am looking at photographers now. I hear that she is really helpful with invitations and favors so that is what I plan on using her for.

I have two emails - one I can`t check at work ([email protected]) and one I can`t check at home ([email protected]). I check the work email everyday and the hotmail a few times a week. I live in Baltimore. Last year I was working in Arlingon though and I lived in Bethesda. It was EXPENSIVE to live there and my fiance lived in Baltimore, so it was tough. Plus, I really missed Baltimore after I moved, so I came back! The trips to LI have been okay becuase my fiance has been driving. Tieing in Karen`s comment, they are about to get more difficult becuase he does not want to continue traveling to LI to meet with wedding vendors. 'I trust your judgement' is the response I usually get. He just wants to get married and would be just as happy if I suggested we take a trip some weekend and just do it. But I need the party! Becky
