Re: Registering

I registered a few months after we got engaged just to have it. Even though our wedding is 2 years away I gave my guests the option of a gift for our e-party and now for Christmas when people ask what I want or need I just tell them where we are registered.
We registered at Bed Bath and Beyond, Williams and Sonoma, and Pottery Barn.

Re: Registering

I would like to just offer some advice for anyone contemplating Bloomingdales for their registry. FH was insistent on registering there mostly because he likes the atmosphere better (less crowds). However, if I could do it over I would have chosen Macy's or Fortunoff for those particular items for the following reasons:

1. Bloomie's RARELY offers any promos whereas Macys and Fortunoff's have been offering our China with a FREE soup bowl with every place setting. I now have 8 place settings with no soup bowls

2. Bloomingdales doesn't have coupons as frequently so people might be less inclined to purchase expensive items.

3. Macys does a cashback program, where you get a certain percentage back on every gift purchased off of your registry.

I also wanna point out that one problem I experienced was that a lot of people that bought us stuff for our engagement party that was on our registry, did not buy it from Bloomingdales b/c they found it cheaper elsewhere, which caused some confusion for me afterwards trying to update my registry accordingly.

HEY TWIN!!!

Thanks for the feedback guys especially, the bloomys info! GOOD TO KNOW!

I might have to scout out bed bath and beyond and fortunoff to see what they really have.

Has anyone done crate and barrel? any thoughts?

I love Crate and Barrel. I am prob gonna set up a small registry for some of their casual serving platters and stuff like that. They also have nice placemats and table decor.

Re: Registering

We registered at Fortunoff, BBB and Crate & Barrel. We later moved everything off Fortnuoff to BBB (it was mainly appliances -- and the 2 things that were unique to Fortunoff were bought already), and we added Macys. Right now our Macy's registry only has a few items (the all-purpose bowls from our China set that BBB didnt have, the matching Lenox glasses that BBB didn't have, and some bedding we liked better than BBB)

1. BBB

Pros: Hands down best place to register. Really convenient for people bc they are everywhere, they honor the 20% coupons and other promotions (ex: my grandma bought a lot of our china, and they honored Macy's 'free soup bowl with each place setting' promotion AND their own '$50 gift card when you spend $200 on Lenox' promotion and still let her use 20% off coupons on all of it even though they were technically expired and exclude Lenox). They also have the best return policy (full price back in cash if it's on your registry) and the people there are very helpful. They dont always have the best selection in China on the floor, but you can look elsewhere and ask BBB to scan it on for you.

Cons: They do an awful job at packing things that are sent by mail. One piece of bubble wrap? Flimsy boxes? We've had 1 broken place setting, 1 broken soup bowl, broken sugar and broken creamer. they are good with returns, but they wouldnt have so many if they packed things well! Also, it takes a while for some things to ship.

Crate & Barrel:

Pros: I love this store, they have amazingly gorgeous things and great prices. They wrap things SO well that the majority of what we registered for was highly breakable and not a single scratch on any of it. Their boxes are sturdy and cute, they ship really fast, great customer service etc. I want to own everything in the store!

Cons: Things get discontinued all the time! We registered early because of our e-party and our glasses were being discontinued. They were on sale because of that (50% off) so we bought them ourselves. Same with our placemats and napkins. Be careful about registering too early and keep a look out on your registry -- it says if there is limited quantity or if its soon to be discontinued.

Macy's:

Pros: Lots of stuff that the other places dont carry. You get a free subscription to a bridal mag, and a lot of bonus stuff. They will make a donation to a charity of your choice every time people buy from your registry. they also will give you something like 10% off any purchase from the time you register to your wedding date if you use your macy's card, and you also get a % back after in gift cards (from $$ you or guests spend from your registry). Lots of sales and coupons.

Cons: Their prices are constantly changing. Most of the stuff on our registry has an orig price and a sale price, but sometimes things go on clearance or occasionally back to your sale price. Ex: our down comforter is listed as $500 with a sale price of $299 all the time. There was a week where it was only listed at $500. There's a risk people will overpay for some of your items.

Fortunoff:

We ended up switching because there's no Fortunoff out here by us, hard for OOT guests who like to shop in a physical store, and BBB generally has the same things with better prices. They do have some nice stuff though!

Re: Registering

We registered at BBB and Target (we had a bunch of stuff already since we've been living together for 2 years) and only needed a few things.

I'd suggest writing a very specific list to go into the store with... we didnt want china but all of a sudden you start seeing all this pretty things and we found ourselves saying 'A full set of champagne glasses, I mean we drink wine out of the bottle but champ glasses? surrre!'. By sticking to the list we ensured that most of what we had on our registry was bought.

We also updated the registry online afterwards as sometimes trying to find stuff in the store was aggravating (where the hell are your steamer baskets?!)

Try to avoid going on the weekends, but in the evenings tend to be good as well. I know at BBB, if you are doing a registry, they let you stay as late as you want to finish up (without rushing you or anything)

Re: Registering

We registered at Macy's, Williams Sonoma, and Target.

We went into the store to do Macy's, but did the other two online, for convenience sake. I wish we had gone into the store for WS and Target b/c the # 1 complaint was that most of our stuff couldn't be found in the store, so when it came time for my showers, people shopped last minute and couldn't bring a physical gift with them.

Macy's is great for so many reasons, but chief among them are the fact that they are everywhere in the country, and the star rewards program. Every time someone purchases something off our registry, we get 'cash' back. So after the wedding, we will get a gift card from them with all of the rewards and that will help us to complete our registry items.

Target is great for the convenience factor too. We registered at WS mostly for the specialty baking and cooking items I wanted (put all applilances on the Macy's list).

We decided against Fortunoff's for a few reasons: first, it is a tri-state area store. 99% of our guests do not live up there and their website is not as good (IMHO) as Macy's. There were also horror stories about them on the boards here, specifically regarding returns/exchanges and things suddenly being discontinued. As for BBB, they are great with returns but most of what we would have registered there for was at Macy's anyway and we couldn't get our china from BBB, so there wasn't a point in my mind to having stuff there as well.

I C&B but we aren't registered for everyday dishes and that's what I would have gotten there.

One other thing I would say is don't register too early, unless you are having an engagement party or something. Things get discontinued seasonally, so you don't want to run the risk of that happening to you and then having to find new stuff.

Good luck!

Re: Registering

I registered at Macys and BBB and I would say everyone said BBB was much better to deal with. They have the 20% off coupons every week or every month and that is where the bulk of my registry items were purchased from.

Re: Registering

i did Macy's and BB&B. LOVED both! Macy's by far has the best rewards program...DH & I ended up with about $400 on a gift card when all was said & done. So i registered for all my really nice stuff there....stemware, flatware, dishes, kitchen appliances etc....then i did BB&B for more fun stuff & home decor...they have a TON of great stuff. I also loved BB&B 'cause they offer cash as an option for returns hope that helped!

Re: Registering

ps: i got SO many gifts for my shower because of Macy's great sales! Instead of getting maybe 1 $$$ gift from one person i got three! if u get the word out early that u're registered there people will LOVE it & look for the sales! more/better sales = more gifts for u! (and the staff at macy's is great...my friends told me that they informed them if sales were about to go on if they were about to purchase something!)

Re: Registering

This is awesome feedback! I know for sure now that we are going to register at Macys, and my FH wants to register at Crate and Barrel so that might just be the second choice. I guess we should wait until january to register although, I was sort of thinking about registering before christmas, in case anyone who wanted to get us something could just get us something for our home(even though we don't have one yet..lol)?

We registered at Target and Bed Bath and Beyond. I liked that Target had good prices. I know some people can spend as much. I love BBB's stuff. A new store is opening near my house and I thought it would be really convenient for me also.
