Registering-Keep it reasonable or all out?

Registering-Keep it reasonable or all out?

So I am starting to think about where we are going to register so I have been looking online at places such as Macy's and Bed Bath & Beyond. I mean, I am not registering at Nordstroms or anything crazy like that but I still feel that some of the items that I am asking for have crazy price tags. I am trying to put myself in my guest's place and I don't want them thinking that I am greedy or crazy for asking for these things. In your opinion, do you think that the registry should be kept as reasonable as possible in terms of price or is it your time to get all the things that you would never otherwise buy for yourself? Keep it reasonable or go all out? What do you think?

I say a good combo of both. People who are close to you will probably want to get you those high ticket items, or some people may go in together to you get you something more on the high end. However, you have to keep in mind that some people can't afford those items either but plenty of good stuff is under $50. Items on my registry were between $10-$800 and I got way more than I ever expected! Besides, it never hurts to register for it and if they can't get it, then they won't!

I wouldn't worry about the price of things if its something you really want and can use. People have different budgets, some spend less, some spend more. I had the Kitchen Aid mixer on my registry and it wasn't cheap. A couple of my cousins pitched in and bought it for me since they knew I love to bake.

When I've shopped off other people's registries, the only items that I thought to myself 'what was she thinking' were a $500 + crystal dolphin thing and flat iron (don't remember how much that cost).

I'll be honest I kept it reasonable mainly because I had most of what I need because I lived on my own for so long now so I didn't need much. But I did only register for things that I needed/wanted that made sense.

I registered at BBB, Macy's, Target, Linens N Things, and Pottery Barn and for a variety of items (pricewise) knowing that some will buy us the lower ticket items and some the higher ticket items. In the end we got about 85% of what was on our registeries and have a few gift cards to purchase what is left on there so we'll have everything we wanted. I had everything from a $500 vacum cleaner to a $20 Tupperware set that I liked so there was plenty of variety. The only high ticket item we didn't get was a pair of lavender crystal flutes I saw at Macy's which was $200. Everything else was bought for the most part.

The ladies are right though- those closer to you will buy the higher ticket items and the rest will be scattered kind of.

i would just do a wide price range. Yes i had a few expensive items but i also had TONS of mid priced and low priced items. As a guest when you look at a registry you look at something in the price range you are willing to spend and thats it, not like i am going to feel obligated to buy someone something that is $400 just bc its on their registry. As a guest you also know that big items are usually for close family and bridal party who usually chips in for a gift.

We put lots of things on there... some things are in the couple of hundred dollar range, I figured those are for people who want to chip in with other people

I just sort of posted the same thing. I felt that i put myself in my guests shoes and if i saw someone putting a toaster oven on their registry for $300 , i would pass it up lol

I guess it also depends on who is buying it. Family will mostly buy the higher end items, and maybe some co-workers may go in together on something big.

Some of the girls just told me to go and put whatever you really want. B/c this is your one chance to do this and ask for what you want.

I mean, keep it reasonable, if you see something you want that is 1,000 maybe you can find something similar to it for less money?

I see what you are saying, i kind of did it both ways. Some of the items I put on my registry are expensive but I don't expect them to buy it for me, I also put stuff on there that I plan on buying after the shower because they will offer it at a discount at that time. So if you want something and think you might buy it after for yourself than def...and you never know, someone might actually buy it for you. My gfriend put a wine cooler for like 500 bucks on hers and somone actually bought it for her!

We went 'all out' in that we registered for the things we really wanted, not a cheaper version just because it was cheaper. However, we registered for cheaper versions of the things we didnt care as much about rather than going for the top of the line EVERYTHING just because it's a registry.

Ex: we registered for a $200 Krups digital toaster oven that is probably my all time favorite registry item. It's from BBB so you can use a coupon, but it's still pricey. I use it at least 5x a week for baking (you dont have to wait for it to preheat), reheating, all kinds of things. It's my equivalent of a Kitchen Aid stand mixer which we *didn't* register for because I don't really bake (partially because I was too lazy for the oven to preheat) and instead we registered for a high-end Kitchen Aid hand mixer. We also registered for the $19.99 electric knife because I liked the look of it better than the $49.99 version and how often do you really use one?

We did register for nice pots/pans, a Dyson, and fancy bedding but most of the items we registered for are under $25, and many under $50 as well. There are some expensive things as well, but you never know! Plus, we will have many OOTers who will prefer to give gifts instead of money for the wedding, so we wanted there to be things left.

Macys drives me nuts because their online registry prices fluctuate so much (ex: a down comforter may be $299 one day and then $575 the next! I've heard the prices in the store are sometimes cheaper than online, but I'm afraid if our guests look on the wrong day they will have a heart attack).

That is one of the reasons why I didn't go with Macy's for my registry.

did you find another store that carries the same stuff? I'd consider switching but it might be too late.

The only things we really have on there are the venetian lace crystal stemware (we have all of the wine glasses but didnt get the water goblets yet), our bedding (court of versailles), and umm... the venetian lace all-purpose bowls. and 2 random white ceramic square vegetable bowls (like $7)

I did a nice mix, but I also had a small shower and I knew what people would be willing to pay. I did a few expensive things, but the big things my Mom and Dad knew I wanted and told me not to reg for since they *might* get it for me..... I say do a semi wish list but if you have your eye on something you wnat to buy yourself put it on the reg....worst case senario you don't get it but use the 20%off coupon after the wedding to complete your reg. My sister got married 3yrs ago and her reg was such a wish list people LAUGHED at what she asked for. Many thought it was a joke when in reality it wasn't and she was mad after the shower becasue so much stuff wasn't from the reg! Um HELLO....be realistic! It was a mess...FM if I can help further. So to answer the question.....go big but remember you don't want people laughing in BBB about a $800 vacume if 95% of the guests will only spend $100.JMHO

We did both. Some really expensive things and some cheap. When we would go to another store and see something cheaper I would go online and take it off the expensive store and put it on the cheaperone. Something at Maceys was $80.00 and at BB&B it was $59.99 so I switched it! Good Luck!

Re: Registering-Keep it reasonable or all out?

Ya, I noticed that already. For instance, I want a kitchenaid mixer because I'm a HUGE baker. At Macy's it's $399.99 and then at BBB it $299.99. That's a huge difference. Plus I know that there are always coupons for BBB instead of waiting for a sale at Macy's. Thanks for the good advice!

Re: Registering-Keep it reasonable or all out?

I have about 300 items on the registry that range from $10 to $650( 1 item, miele cat&dog vac) I tried to stick to the $50 to $100 items. I also don't need much b/c I've been living on my own for about 10 yrs now. But there are always xtra things I can use. I'm registering for things I would like to splurge on. my family usually chips in for the bigger gifts so I know that a few of those will be okay.

I picked a lot of items b/c some people like to do baskets.
( i have about 100 people attending the shower) I wouldnt drive myself crazy if you don't find a lot of stuff b/c some people end up giving you $$ or gift cards anyway.

I'd say register for things that won't go out of style. You can always get nice sheets, pillows, ottomans, other home decor... at places like marshalls. Try and register for the durables.

have a good time registering!
