I agree with everyone, make it a variety. Don't feel bad about putting things that are higher priced.
You could put big ticket items that you want even though you know you wont get as a gift in order to get the registry completion discount. I had done that with a few items ( side table, lamp and a floor length mirror)
I didn't care if people thought- why would she put that on her registry.
The only thing I got made fun of was that I put a 100$ ironing board- I didnt expect anyone to get it but wanted the discount after the fact.

Re: Registering-Keep it reasonable or all out?
When DH and I registered, we did a few different stores with a range. This way people who chose to use our registries to purchase gifts had a wide range to choose from.

Since I had more than one registry it gave my guests the option to buy inexpensive as well as high end items. My high end stuff was on my Fortunoff registry, Macy's was the more reasonably priced items. And Williams Sonoma had a little of both. You'd be surprised how generous people are.

Keep it a wide range. Remember you may want to use the completion discount for the higher priced items if they're not purchased for you.

Go for it! Register for your dream items, as well as for the more practical stuff. Worst that will happen is that you don't get the higher-priced items and if you really want them after the wedding, you use your Completion Discount to buy them for yourself.

you should ask for what you want as long as there is a really nice range and a lot of stuff for guests to choose from. like my BBB registry has everything from the $15 closet organizer to a $500 vacuum. just make sure there are a lot more gifts than guests so no one feels pressured to spend more than they can.
when we started our registry (upon request) for our e-party, i did get one comment from a friend-- 'why do you need a $250 golden platter???' after i explained that it was my china, she totally understood.
