The twice as many gifts as guests rule applies more outside the northeast where people give gifts for the shower AND the wedding. In NY most people give cash for the wedding (though I'm actually surprised by the amount of registry gifts I've been getting!), plus a lot will be big ticket items people will split.

ETA: PLus many guests are part of a couple who will be giving only one gift

we have somewhere between 200 and 250 spread out among 4 places. i am counting things where i requested multiples (towels, dishes, etc) as individual gifts. we will likely be adding more as time goes on.
