My mom has been asking us to register before the engagement party. I have always thought that you registered before the shower but after the engagement party... your thoughts?
yeah.... I hear ya... I come from a fairly stereo-typical Italian family where Engagement parties are just a part of the package.... We have big parties for engagement, for birthdays, for EVERYTHING. My cousins have in the past done engagement parties at halls.... we are just doing a catered dinner at my grandparents' house... MUCH more low-keyed than usually seen.
we didn't register, mainly because we wouldnt know where to put everything (we did not live together at the time). i have to say it worked out for us because everyone gave us money except for DH's grandma who got us glasses... that money was REALLY helpful in paying off our vendors.
they always say to register for upgrades of items you have. the problem with not registering is yes some people may give you cash or people may get gifts of their own choice. if you have toasting flutes in mind or dont want 100 picture frames its not always the best route. i say register and if you need to return it! BBB lets you return it for cash!

We also registered... Some people want to get you gifts, that's just they way some people are. And wouldn't you rather then be gifts that you'll want and actually use!!!
