I would wait. A lot of things become discontinued. I registered in August and some of my items aren't available anymore. I would say a good 8-12 months before you get married, unless you are having an engagement party, because people love to get gifts from there too.
some people will want to start buying you gifts as soon as you get engaged... its also really painful and boring and something you want to take your time with to really think through... 8-12 months before you get married is a good estimate
Well that's the thing, my engagement party is in January.. but my wedding isnt until 2012.. So should I register for little stuff now for the engagement party and register for the bigger stuff down the line?
yes i would definitely register for engagement party items!
Then I would do it. You always can update (which I do constantly)

BBB, Macy's, Target, Crate & Barrel. These are the biggies.
I just registered at Macys and they gave us a free bag and free wedding magazines! They were super helpful too. They have a rewards program where you get a giftcard after the wedding. BBB has a rewards program too for free items. I plan to do both!

No problem! Macy's has a GREAT rewards program. My co-worker's wedding was a year ago and she's still getting freebies from Macy's.
I registered shortly after we got engaged (for a few items) because people wanted to get us gifts. We recently added more and will continue to add more up to the shower!
i would wait bc alot of stufff gets discontinued. i had to change my bedding like 6 times lol.
i registered maybe like a little over a month or two before my shower. i'm a procrastinator. lol.

My engagement party is next weekend. I didn't register. I will register for my shower. Getting married in September. I should start thinking about these things. LOL
